Airplane Plane

The plane in your dream shows all the amazing possibilities of change, of varied experience, of romance, business and discovery in life today. But it also holds all the possibilities of failure, of not being able to get your projects or relationship off the ground, along with delays, unexpected threats, and the possible tragedy and loss you might meet in life. Your dream airplane communicates this in the action your dream portrays. The plane journey, for instance, suggests a change in your life, leaving your ordinary affairs behind. It is a journey into the unknown, into taking risks. Perhaps you are making a move toward, or away from, love and opportunity. It is risky because the plane can fall from the sky, and you can meet feelings of failure or despair.

A plane can also attack, and this shows fears, anxiety about being exposed to attack from other people or events. This does not mean you will be attacked, only that you fear it.

To climb aboard a plane is to embark upon dramatic movement from one way of life, or one situation in life, to another; a leap into the unknown, into chance – so it is a powerful symbol of change. Perhaps that flight into chance, into life and its mysterious possibilities might be okay. But it might fall from the sky too. Meanwhile, on the plane you will not have your feet on the ground, you will not be secure, everything is ‘up in the air’. The plans, the love, the hopes and efforts might die, might lead to tragedy with all its rippling effects moving into the web of relationships and events connected with the flight of the plane.

In exploring a dream about a plane crash it took a long time to really connect with anything, but when I did the feelings were all about how there has been a crash of my dreams, ambitions, desire for love and the heightened feelings that arose or ‘took off’ in connection with a lover. In comments on planes above I say, “The plans, the love, the hopes and efforts might die, might lead to tragedy with all its rippling effects moving into the web of relationships and events connected with the flight of the plane.” This was true in my life.

An attacking aircraft: Feeling attacked either by your own doubts and self criticism, or that of others.

Being grounded: Sense of not getting anywhere and frustration; plans and hopes that haven’t connected with achievement or opportunity – maybe this isn’t the right time yet.

Biplane: It can represent a more full contact with flying in a plane, and needs a lot more courage to do.

Example: “I saw a biplane fly overhead. Its pilot was performing daring new stunts. I ran into a house to tell a man who was in bed to run out and see the plane. ” David R.

The example clearly shows one aspect of what a biplane means, being daring in a new area, taking risks in life, braving a new work area or relationship.

Difficulty landing: Difficulty achieving goal or making it real in a down to earth way; anxiety about where life events are taking you; feeling out of control or not being in control; difficulties or fears about being in someone else’s hands.

Falling out of plane: Usually anxiety, sometimes about death or failure of high hopes. It is also the opportunity to fly if you can overcome your anxieties.

Flight attendant: A part of you trained in dealing with personal problems, and also emergencies.

Pilot: The pilot is a part of you used to having a much wider and inclusive view of where you are going in your life, so trust their help.

Plane falling rapidly: ‘Pit’ feeling in stomach that one gets when feeling anxiety about the outcome of a situation; sense of failure or guilt; apprehension about the future of a project or direction; anxiety about something.

Plane journey: The plane is also a means of leaving things behind, rising above or finding a way of escaping difficulties or the past. It is a way we move beyond the limitations of any one locality, racial customs, family attitudes or religious environments. It is the power of the mind to move among and learn from or experience these many states of being. It offers a much wider or more inclusive view of where you are and where you are going in life.

Private plane: Ones personal activities and plans not deeply connected with other people.

The crashed or wrecked plane: Worry about failing. Can be anxiety bringing down your ambition or adventurousness; a loss of self confidence or mental equilibrium; warning about a business project; broken dreams and hopes. Sometimes shows or refers to a break up in a relationship or a failed endeavour, a hope, a journey that fails.

Watching a plane crash: A sense of emergency; feeling you are aware of an important social or national event. Sensing something difficult happening or having happened in your life, like a divorce or loss of business or love for instance. Can sometimes relate to childhood traumas that make it difficult for you to get your life taking flight.

The plane journey: Shows a move toward independence; leaving home or friends; success.

Watching a plane land safely: The arrival back to oneself of the actions, words and energies sent out into the world. As a simple example, we may have a carpet to give away because we are moving. We tell a neighbour who passes the information to someone else. This new person wants the carpet. A completely new person therefore lands, or arrives in our life. The landing plane may also mean coming down to earth again, or making something more applicable in an everyday sense.

The example below clearly shows one aspect of what a plane means, being daring in a new area, taking risks in life, braving a new work area or relationship. David is calling on a part of himself that is withdrawn and inactive to ‘get up’ and be involved in something daring. Sometimes the plane in the sky represents feeling threatened by something new or unknown. This is shown in the second example.

Example: I saw a biplane fly overhead. Its pilot was performing daring new stunts. I ran into a house to tell a man who was in bed to run out and see the plane. David R.

Example: A woman who was a radio researcher was offered the job of presenter. She was thrilled but dreamt she was in a road walking and planes flew overhead dropping bombs and shooting. She had to dive into a ditch to avoid being killed. When she explored the dream she realised she was afraid of facing the public directly, and this fear if left unconscious would have caused her to refuse the job. She accepted the fear and managed to press forward with the job.

Useful Questions and Hints:

Am I taking a ‘flight’ into a new or challenging situation or relationship?

What am I leaving behind or arriving at?

Are there radical shifts of life style I am involved in?

Do some events in my life feel like a ‘plane crash’?

It’s been two days in a row in which I dream about airplanes, hope you can help me… The first day I dreamt that I saw a plane crash near my grandma’s home. The next day I dreamt I was aboard a plane with my parents and sisters (the plane was small so it looked like a private one) and we flew back to a small town we used to live. The weird part is that it had troubles to land because of the wind.

Hi,,,I dreamed that I watch a plane cross over my house as it was turning side ways then upside down and crashEd behind my house in an open field. I saw the smoke and suddenly the plane was headed on the ground in a slide heading towards my house. It was heading for my son’s room. It crashed into my house and just stopped before making contact with my son’s room. My son and I live alone as my husband has transitioned to heaven 8 months ago. I watched the nose of the plane speeding and sliding towards our home but there was nothing I could do. I thought it killed my son but he began to walk out of the wreckage soon after the collision. He is 23yrs old but was only about 7 yrs old in this dream. What does this mean? Thanks wendy

Dear Wendy – The way I see your dream is that the plane crash reflects the physical loss of your husband in your waking life.
What happens after the crash – the plane heading for your son’s room –
I see as a reflection of your initial belief of having lost more than his physical body.
    See http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/beliefs/
Your son in your dream I see as a symbol of the fruit of your relationship with your husband and his age in your dream – 7 years – as a symbol of great change and inner growth.
What you have created through your living and loving together cannot be killed, for it is part of your inner world (too) and of Life and it still has a lot of potential for growth.

Hello Tony,
Please can you answer me ASAP, please thank you
OK, I had a dream that I was on an airplane with my son and the plane crashed into the water we survived, we were with my sister. But the thing is I am planing on going on vacation over sea in one week this July and we are taking a 7 hours flight!!!
I am so afraid that I want to cancel the trip, I think I will die in a crash I am wondering if the dream was a sign. I am terrify of airplanes. Thank you

    -Anna - Tony's Assistant 2015-07-07 16:17:26

Dear Titi – Your dream is a screen on which your innermost fears and terrors about your upcoming 7 hours flight are projected. Your dream is ONLY a sign of the fears you have regarding your upcoming flight, NOT a sign that your plane will crash in your waking life.
What happens in your dream is that your fear “takes you down” and you end up in the water – alive NOT death – which is a symbol of your fearful emotions, which do not kill you but are difficult to handle.
Just remember that what does not kill you will make you feel stronger and so see it as a wonderful exercise to help you learn to deal with fears.
I wish you a happy vacation.

Just woke up in a panic! had a very vivid dream that I was sitting on a balcony at a table with friends – we were on the 1st or second floor level overlooking train tracks.

then from the railway tracks below the remnants of a plane, the cockpit up to the wings – the rest of the plane was missing rose up towards the balcony. it was engulfed in flames. The fireball made its way towards me and even though a number of friends were there -about 3/4 they didn’t show any concern or panic.

I assumed the plane had crashed but I didn’t see the crash.

I can remember I screamed for my mom….. And managed to escape from being burnt.

Anyone any ideas what this could mean?

-Thania Berlin 2015-06-18 5:43:57

Hi, I had this dream about plane crash. So, I think I was in some kind of a private jet (everyone inside is my family) and even the pilot is one of my relatives. The plane took off so unstable, and the door of the plane is not even closed! What’s worst is that there was a big tornado with a lot of trashes going around that tornado and the time started to freeze, but one by one, the plane started to fall into pieces as I saw my mom suddenly gone, and then it started to freeze again, and I started to lose hope that I know I was about to die, and I started praying to God. When the plane started to fall again, we crashed on the water, and I saw that my mom and my dad is not there. But somehow, it got replayed, but this time there were more tornadoes with trashes (2 to 4 tornadoes perhaps, it changes because I kept on seeing it from time to time). This time it’s like I’m ready to jump with the life vest and taught my uncle next to me how to do it. I still did not see my parents, and we got seperated in different islands. But, I was somehow seeing my mom waiting for me to come back and I saw this vision of only me and my mom were left.

I had a dream where at first I was “joining the mile high club” with a jerk I know and then I went through the airport and there was a shooting, I just ran through and hopped back on my plane with the jerk that was real concerned and sweet about the situation and I sat on his lap the rest of the flight through my neighborhood we were flying really low.

I had a dream I bought a van, combi van then it turned out to be a small one seater plane. I then resized I had to replace the engine. The engine. was going to cost me $1800 dollars. This man I had just met and felt a connection with was in ny dream he lives in new Zealand.

-Eliza 2015-04-27 16:40:23

So I have had this similar dream many times just in different ways and would like a more understanding version of it. The first few times I had this dream it was me walking at night down the street not too far from my house and I just so happened to look up and see planes falling from the sky crashing everywhere but they weren’t hitting me but I felt frighten by it. The other dreams I’ve had was the same but I was with my family and we were dodging the planes. Recently me and my family were by this house which was our house apparently and we seen a triangle like plane go right above us now the triangle plane was white and tall and loud . Then the other plane that stood out was a very large red plane that crashed in the water and was able to make its way out the water and get up in the air but then crashed into the city. All the planes seem to have a problem with getting off the ground. And Im assuming we all died bc we went into the house trying to stay dry from water being all over the place and we must of drowned I’m not sure but it’s jus very weird

    -Anna 2015-04-29 11:17:15

Dear Eliza – An important thing to remember is that most of what we do is habitual, as your dreams express as well. It takes no thought or effort to do it. Habits feel right because they have been done for so long. Even emotional responses are often habitual. So when you change you are going to confront a habit. Practising the new thing is necessary. Practice until the new thing is itself a habit and easy.
    See http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/habits/

If you watch yourself you will notice that whatever you think about you have a feeling reaction to. Obviously it is noticeable in regard to frightening dream images. And dreams are only your feeling reactions put into images and drama.
    See http://dreamhawk.com/news/avoiding-being-my-own-victim/
You wrote “And I’m assuming” which reminded me of a story in a book I once read.
I feel it might be helpful to explore why you assume and if you also “only” assume that planes (ideas, (business) projects will crash, which habitual thinking robs you of looking at anything without your inbuilt/ingrained prejudgments.
    The story of the hammer:
A man wants to hang a painting. He has the nail, but not the hammer. Therefore it occurs to him to go over to the neighbour and ask him to lend him his hammer, but at this point, doubt sets in. What if he doesn’t want to lend me the hammer? Yesterday he barely spoke to me. Maybe he was in a hurry. Or, perhaps, he holds something against me. But why? I didn’t do anything to him.
If he would ask me to lend him something, I would, at once. How can he refuse to lend me his hammer? People like him make other people’s life miserable. Worst, he thinks that I need him because he has a hammer. This has got to stop!
And suddenly the guy runs to the neighbour’s door, rings, and before letting him say anything, he screams: “you can keep your hammer, you bastard!”

-Lexie 2015-04-25 21:25:27

I had a dream I was going on a trip with my 3 children and somehow we got separated, I thought they had got on the plane and I just made it to the plane on time. It started to taxi and I realized that my children weren’t on it. I woke up from the dream before it took off. What does this mean?

    -Anna 2015-04-28 8:36:17

Dear Lexie – Not knowing anything about your waking life I have to take a somewhat educated guess at what your dream means.
And so I merely see it as that you are losing touch with your inner and/or outer child(ren).
In order to understand what you are separating yourself from, I feel it may help to explore what you associate with each child. For instance one of your three children might be very interested and in touch with nature, animals etc. Another child might be interested in creativity, painting, building with LEGO bricks etc.
You can ask yourself if you feel you are striving (too much?) to get some project off the ground?
I believe that if you give your inner children a place in creating and carrying out your dreams and projects, you can accomplish more and you can be more successful. Using your inner children and having fun in the workplace unleashes your creativity. It can also function as a means of diminishing the tension and stress – “I just made it to the plane on time”. – of personal and professional pressures and responsibilities.
Perhaps this song can give you a start towards a different perception? 😉

-Jay 2015-04-19 14:09:29

I have long had a reoccurring dream that is more like a nightmare with how vivid and real it seems. It usually takes place in my home town very near my house and I will be outside and I will see a large commercial 747 flying dangerously low to neighboring houses. The plane will all the sudden start to pull up with an upward trajectory. Once this happens, I know exactly what’s going to happen next because I have had this dream so many times…. the plane will quickly twist around and begin a nose dive crashing about 1-200 yards away from my house and exploding. I just woke up from this nightmare about 30 minutes ago and it’s really bothering me.

    -Anna 2015-04-21 8:10:52

Dear Jay – In general dreams recur because there are ways the dreamer habitually responds to their internal or external world. Because their attitude or response is unchanging, the dream that reflects it remains the same. It is noticeable in those who explore their dreams using such techniques as described under processing dreams, that recurring themes disappear or change because the attitudes or habitual anxieties that gave rise to them have been met or transformed.
    See http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/processing-dreams/
I see the Archetype of the Saboteur is at work in your recurring dreams and so in your habitual responses towards your ambitions, your dreams, your desire for love etc.
We all have something of a saboteur working in our life somewhere. It can be as subtle as the beliefs you hold, preventing a certain direction in life – “flying dangerously low; the plane will all the sudden start to pull up with an upward trajectory; and begin a nose dive crashing” – or it can be a full time action destroying your own best interests.
    See http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/archetype-of-the-saboteur/
As I see it, the pattern in which you got stuck is that you either fly too low and as an habitual response to that you aim too high and crash because of that.
I associate it with the story of Icarus http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Icarus and in this light you can make the archetype of the saboteur purposeful, for it enabled you to experience both ends of the scale and these are important lessons we all have to learn at some point in our life.
Having experienced both extremes of our duality, perhaps you can decide to explore now what it is like to fly beyond opposites?
Part of the potential of dreams is an experience of going beyond opposites, of resolving paradoxes, of moving beyond the limitations of the rational mind and emotional responses.
Going beyond paradox. In this altered state of consciousness something is experienced where all the opposites of life are resolved, where everything is true and untrue at the same time. It is what Buddhists call the Void, in which there is no form, no ego, no certainty, no past, no future, no beginning to move from and no goal to reach. Although it can be a disturbing experience when first met, it has the possibility of bringing enormous liberation. This is because our ego and our usual values are usually embedded in concepts that can only ever be either this or that; only ever be partially true; only ever be a fragment of reality. One might for instance develop ones identity out of being male or female, out of being honest or a villain. The Void strips all this away. Nothing one can think, nothing one can aim at as a standard, is anything more than an insignificant molecule of information in the vast ocean of energy and consciousness. It doesn’t matter whether we think about the sun or a mote of dust, a thought is never ever more than a definition from a particular viewpoint of something that is multidimensional and beyond any final definition.

I thank you for your reply as I’m sure you have tons of emails to reply to. It was extremely insightful. I have always been extremely skeptical to say the least about spirituality although it is the only thing that explains a lot of my experiences. I have always tried to find truth in tangible science. There is one other recurring dream that fascinates me based on my research. I have a recurring dream of winning money on slot machines at a casino. I do gamble a lot at casinos but I almost always lose. Sometimes I dream I’m winning at a poker table playing Texas Holdem (which I’m very familiar with) and sometimes it’s blackjack but it is often on slots as well. I’m not a rich person and I typically lose a lot at the Indian casino that I frequent but I have seen some interesting interpretations of this dream and I’m wondering if you have any comments.

        -Jay 2015-05-05 3:47:18

I’m also wondering how it might tie into my other dream which you commented on. You say my other recurring dream might have to do with my self esteem as well as unrealistic expectations but based on my research, this winning at the casino dream would counter that. I have always been a high IQ person and have valued tangible science over spirituality but there have been way too many coincidences in my life that science cannot explain and being as such, i have started to opens mind and give much more credence to spiritualistic intwrperetations.

Dear Jay – Thank you for your appreciation of our work and for your feedback. I suppose you read this article too; http://dreamhawk.com/dream-dictionary/winning-money/
        QUOTE
“Many of us have the desire to have more ability to get what we want, and this can often produce a dream of winning a lot of money. Usually there is no fulfilment of these dream, but those dreamers who take it seriously can often produce results”.
You wrote: “I do gamble a lot at casinos but I almost always lose”. With that in mind I merely see this recurring dream of winning money as a means of compensating for almost always losing at casinos in your waking life. See

I don’t really understand my dream, I was stood outside on an airdrome/airfield (not an airport) i was on the grass banking back from the runway, holding a big flag rolled around a pole standing next to a tent. I wanted to cross the runway then planes started landing in formation (military planes as part of an air show) I watched one in particular with interest, it had a long spike on its nose cone. once they landed I was speaking to a man I seemed to know, we then addressed the air show audience (that appeared from nowhere) like we were the compares, he gave me a hat (a white captains cap) and I gave him one white glove, a lot of emphasis was put on this exchange. the planes had parked in a circle and we (me the man, named gus?, and the audience were stood in the centre, there was lots of memorabilia on tables like a sale, car boot sale and emphasis was put on an old jar that was some sort of ashtray watch a gold top? I’ve no idea what any of that means!

-Justin reyes 2015-04-15 3:17:42

when i first moved to westerville i used to have these very weird nightmares about walking alone at night and when i would look up i would see a huge ass airplane right in front of my face and when it hit me i woke up. thats what scares me the most now. to have a airplane crash into me at night. i was 17 at the time of these nightmares. im now 23 ,well now i work nightshift at this warehouse and its right next to the airport and the airplanes fly directly over the warehouse . please help me

    -Anna 2015-04-16 16:22:26

Dear Justin- One of the common features of a nightmare is that we are desperately trying to get away from a situation; feel stuck in a terrible condition; or meet fear or disgust in almost overwhelming degree, so that on waking we feel enormous relief it was just a dream. Because of the intensity of a nightmare we will remember it long after other dreams; remember even if we seldom ever recall other dreams. We may even worry about what it means for a long period of time, perhaps even years. Many people, on waking find the feelings, or sometimes even the imagery, continuing for some time. So for instance they may feel so much fear they have to switch all the lights on in the house.
I wonder if you know the expression “Fly in the face of someone”. It means to challenge someone and I trust you WERE challenged when you first moved to Westerville.
Walking alone at night in your dream also suggests that you still had to figure out how to find your way.
So your nightmares at that time merely reflected the challenges you had to face when you started a new life in an unknown city.

I had a dream wherein I am going to be the pilot of the flight in an airplane with some school mates. First, I saw myself in a hotel walking around in a gown outside the ballrooms and when I opened the door, my 2 guy classmates were there but I only called 1 and told him I’m going to be the co pilot in a flight. Suddenly, I was in the airport and I was troubled as to how to bring the airplane unto the runway. Then, at the import I saw one of my teachers there and verified if I’m really the pilot. I borrowed my auntie’s phone and when I finaly checked it, it was low battery. Being the pilot of the flight, I had to have another phone. Suddenly I was In a small aircraft with my classmates and my 2 cousins, and a really handsome co pilot. Suddenly only half of the airplane took off and had a round. When it landed the aircraft was the same again. My cousins and I went in our house, my cousins were taking theyre time fixing themselves while I was looking for clothes to change into. Somehow, I kept wearing the wrong clothes and took me a long time before I got out. My cousins left already but didn’t tell me anything. When I was done preparing, I stepped out the front door being told that I was so long that they left and that my school us will bring me there. As my school bus arrived, I was suddenly sitted inside and I felt frustrated because I wanted to look good for the flight wherein I’m the pilot. And that’s where the dream ends. I wonder what would happen if I got to the airport.. If I’d still be the pilot of the flight.

-Kari 2015-03-22 14:08:19

Hi! I have had this same dream two nights in a row! The first night I had a dream I was taking flying lessons from a pilot in his plane. The second night same dream but also it was longer and we fell in love and got married! Thankyou!

    -Anna 2015-03-23 17:43:06

The dream pilot is an aspect of you that is experienced in taking control of a situation and acting on it. He is trained and is therefore a good advisor and teacher.
And so with his help you learn new ways and you move easily and successfully through some inner changes which then result in the marriage.
A marriage is like uniting two different aspects of yourself such as intellect and feelings, practical and intuitive self; the ‘marriage’ between conscious and unconscious self.
So what do you associate with the pilot and with your dream figure in your dream, for those aspects did unite?
