What does my dream mean? – How to explore your dream meanings:
There are several ways you can understand the meanings held in your dreams, and there are several levels. The first is an easily understood level, followed by greater depths:
- You can enter a key word in the search box above. The Dream Dictionary contains interpretations on almost any type of dream subject. So if you dreamt of a flying saucer landing in a field, and aliens getting out and taking a baby, a snake, and a pregnant dog back into the saucer, you could search separately for each of these subjects in the Dream Dictionary. Find the entry for flying saucer; then the entry for dog, baby, snake, pregnant, and so on. For each entry, find further related entries by looking under “Similar Articles” on the right hand side of the page.
- Each entry gives the general meaning of the dream subject, just as an encyclopedia or dictionary does for a word. Several possible meanings are given. This is because as with our speech the position of the word – the context – gives it special meanings. So a hot dog would be quite different to a black dog, dog-end or dead dog. So when you read an entry which has several different meanings, sometimes with a ‘;’ between, it simply means any one of them could apply. So you need to think about the feelings in your dream, the context, the other imagery used. Please do not fall into the trap that one reviewer made of saying that the whole dictionary is about sex. Of course sex is one meaning among many others. So use your own sense of your dream as well as any definitions given.
- If you are writing in comments for a dream interpretation, please describe the dream as fully as you can, and if it is relevant add your age your life and situation.
- To really explore the meaning it is useful to use the Dream Dictionary as it is designed, rather than arrive at a ‘thought out’ interpretation. To see a working example of this see ‘Dream Interpretation Example One’.
- Remember too that when you are dreaming you are in a completely different environment, completely unlike waking life. To read a description of this and its possibilities see What We Need to Remember About Dreaming; Dream Yoga; ‘Dream Interpretation Example Two’ and The Magical Dream Machine.
- This Online Dream Dictionary is constantly being upgraded, so please give us feedback about any dream symbols missing, and any dreams you have understood.
- Unlike many online dream sites, DreamHawk has tremendous depth, with a full Dream Encyclopedia available. You can access this by searching for any word and getting a full sample of features. There is also the list ‘Similar Articles’ to explore that appears alongside any feature or symbol you search for.
- If you want to learn the wonder and depth of dreams and dream interpretation, here are a series of features to explain. See Exploring Your Dreams – Steps in Understanding Your Dreams; Here is an audio example of Tony exploring a dream, not interpreting it: Dream Exploration.
- Remember that a full dream dictionary is available to download with iPhone ; and as the classic Dream Dictionary book .

i’ve been having some strange dreams in the past week. the first one i had gone back in time to the elizebethan times, but i stayed the same age as i am now, i was going out with a friend from school but he got killed for us being together (stabbed to be exact). in the second dream: i woke up late at night and was late for a party but the scene changed and i was alone in an abandoned train station, (it was a concrete slab with one bench in the middle of no where and in front of me was alot of train tracks, there was no one else in sight) i looked to be holding some sort of animal, small and white i was waiting for someone and when they arrived on one of the trains (it was only them to get off) we walked in silence and at one point i stopped bent down and picked something up. in the third dream i was supposed to be going to an important party but i was watching tv and there was alot of people around me being attacked by spiders and they were screaming for help but i just sat there and watched tv and in the end i had been left.
can you tell me what these mean?
I dreamed about picking up my own poop, it was a small piece and it was on the floor outside. I was trying to figure out how to get rid of it without anyone finding out.
Marcela – I think the key statement you make is, “I was trying to figure out how to get rid of it without anyone finding out.”
It suggests there is something – a small thing – you would not like anyone finding out or associating with you. In a way it can be a natural process, like going to the toilet, but it was done in the wrong way or environment. But it doesn’t seem like it happened publicly, as only you are aware of it – indiscretion perhaps only you are aware of. So what messy thing have you done – or feel you have done?

I have being having the same dream for a while, it is that my husband wanted to leave me, or he tells me i must leave, what does it mean?
Hi Juliana – These dreams usually hide a feeling that you are not loved or lovable. That is not to say that you are not lovable or loved by other people, only that sometime in your childhood you have been abandoned or led to feel you were not love. This can leave an awful scar in your emotional life. See http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/peer-dream-group/carryforward to use the process to heal the feelings behind the dream.

I have a reaccuring dream thats been bothering me for the past week, in the dream there is always a lake, always rain and always a boy but the place varies.
In my dream im walking through a forest in the night, its raining heavily and as i get to a clearing there is a black lake, i stand there for a while looking at the water rippling under the rain drops when a boy walks next to me, he has peircing green eyes and pearly white teeth and he smiles and takes my hand and slowly leads me into the water telling me that “you will be saved” as we get deeper i stark panicing and screaming, eventually i get dragged under and die and then i wake up.
I’ve been losing alot of sleep and the dream is driving me up the wall! i want to know what this dream means so i can work on somthing that will stop the dreams.
i had a dream that my grandpa (passed away in 2001) came to stay for a week and i asked him about heaven and he said i’m here to take you with me
So in my dream I was playing a computer game… I guess because that’s what I was doing before I was fell asleep.
Then I went downstairs which was not even in my own house. There were guests and a few dogs that were I think
that looked like a wolf kind. (mix between a Korean dog, wolf, and husky). I went downstairs because there was a boy and girl dog
and I thought they might not get along or do something bad in front of the guests but the girl dog was just sniffing the boy dog.
I had the girl Korean dog/husky/wolf, it was really dark in color like a brown and black color mix, and pulled it away from the boy dog.
She was really nice and I played with her for a few seconds saying how nice she was. She was smiling and all, THEN all of a sudden
her hair on her back got really stiff and stood up and she faced the door, which I just realized, we were facing the front door. She
was growling really badly, she was crouching and looked like she was ready to attack whatever was going to come through the door.
However, looking through the windows at the door, I couldn’t see anyone and it was nice and bright outside. Then I thought I was
waking up and went to my lap top but I couldn’t see like anything. It was like my eyes were shut except for the slightest bit and everything had a tint of red. I put on my glasses and it only cleared up what little I could see. Then on my lap top was some guy dancing to a song.
Also, I was biting the side of my mouth pretty hard and couldn’t stop myself. Then, I closed the window on my lap top of the guy dancing
and then I ACTUALLY woke up. I was really weirded out because I never had the experience of thinking you had woken up but didnt.
Sorry for it being so long, just wanted to get all the details in, it was really vivid.
Thanks!
There is such a lot in your dream Alex, and several ‘Alex’s’ I have put your email address in to make sure Alexandra.Koch@comcast.net.
Obviously it would take forever to attempt to write about the whole dream, so I can only look at the theme. This seems to be an objectification of the states of mind you connect with heaven and hell. For instance I can imagine that to do a boring job aver and over could a sort of hell painting the windows.
So I wonder if this is you seeing the parts of life that you feel are hellish. If so, how can you move toward something that is not a stereotypical pleasure?

my daughter had a three part dream:
1- she was sinking on the Titanic
2- mixed up animals were coming in her basement window(mouse with chipmunk tail, snake with frog mouth, etc
3- she was feeding and owl and a hawk corn from her hand
please interpret
Barbara – This is probably a response to the world. A lot of people are dreaming of enormous events. See http://dreamhawk.com/approaches-to-being/the-vision-of-tomorrow/ about this.
The Titanic is obviously a picture of an enormous disaster that she is involved in – as we all are. And of course there were survivors in the Titanic disaster as your daughter was in her dream.
The second part is a sort of ark theme. This might be a picture of the changes we are facing and can expect. I do not mean exactly as pictures. Also the changes are coming in through the basement windows – the unconscious – where new changes are first sensed. And the animals are the instinctive feelings we have – our intuition.
Then in the third stage the owl and hawk are very important dream creatures/symbols. The owl can see in the dark, so represent intuition, and the hawk is the far seer. The hawk can have a vast overview of what is happening, so I wonder if your daughter has such gifts she is nourishing.

HELLO THERE SIR,
Yestersdays dreams were very eventful for me. I firstly dreamnt of having a rottwiler puppy at home..could not have been more than 10 weeks old. I went out and when i came back in my drem i noticed the dog was missing. i looked everywhere for i and then realised that there was blood dripping from my leather sofas in the corner by the foot of the sofa. I lifted the cushion to see a mass of blood and the puppy was under the cushion not alive. I cleaned the mess up and the puppy was buried. IN THE SAME NIGHT BUT NOT IN THE SAME DREAM i DREAMNT OD GOING TO AN UNKNOWN LADYS HOME where she had 2 extremely large pet snakes…her children were in pampers playing with the snakes on the floor and I was concerned for them..she then took me to her bedroom where she pulled out more snakes..little black ones..very little and prompted me to hold one. I was scared and refused to hold them, she pressured me and so i held it. the snake went inside my hand and formed a circle at first and then a square under my skin..i then cut my hand open to pull the little black snake back out..Please help
Agnes – Have you ever wondered what keeps you alive, and what grew you in the first place? In school we are given the strange information that it is simply biological and due to our genes/DNA. It is as if it is all an accident and like an unfeeling machine. If you could dive deeply down inside yourself, beyond your conscious thoughts and opinions of yourself, and you did this consciously, you would discover, as I did, that there is something that grew us. That something felt very loving and caring. So I knew that it was still inside me and caring.
Why I say all that is because your dream is about a dog that is usually seen as very protective or even violent. Obviously it was only a puppy, but it could have grown big and powerful. So I wonder if you feel vulnerable and have been growing a protective attitude.
Obviously I have to feel my way here, because the snakes were not doing you any harm – but your fears for your vulnerability, the babies – made you fear the worst. Now I have had snakes get under my skin. It was scary at first, but as I relaxed I could feel the strength they gave me.
Also that the snakes formed a circle and square suggests to me that they were given you gifts you refused because of your fear.

i have a dream of finding my cellphone inside my bag….but in reality it was lost…
Jay – This is difficult because you do not describe the dream in any detail. But it could mean two things.
One is that you have not lost your phone, but only misplaced it. Secondly, in the way of dreams, it might be saying that you have not lost you connection with others but still have it within you.
In other words we do not need to keep making noises with our mouth to know we are connected. Silence can be a wonderful way to find it.

umm.. i always have these more like nightmares . it ushaly ends up with me dead beaten raped or worse.i always wake up in anger and sadness and sometimes i cry. i dont like to go to sleep becuase of it.iv had them for over going on 8 years now.they scare em to death and i worry they are trying to show em something i dont know what though.
Chelsea – Having met some real monsters of nightmares myself, and come through them, I know they can be dealt with. But that doesn’t mean they are easy to meet. The difficulty is that the emotions are like pain, you have an instinctive reaction to pull away. So each time you get near you pull back. You can see this in action in the following dream told me by a young woman.
“She had experienced a recurring nightmare of a piece of cloth touching her face. She would scream and scream and wake her family. One night her brother sat with her and made her meet those feelings depicted by the cloth. When she did so she realised it was her grandmother’s funeral shroud. She cried about the loss of her grandmother, felt her feelings about death, and was never troubled again by the nightmare”
So if you can either face the awful feelings, knowing they are only feelings; or have someone support you in meeting them, I know you can be free. When people get through the protective layer of fear they find something extremely valuable. I mean VALUABLE. See http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/nightmares/

I had a dream last night about my belated boyfriend. He’s been gone over 3 years now. In my dream last night I went to a party with a friend who is still living, then at the party I met up with my boyfriend. When the party was over my boyfriend told me to tell the person who brought me that he will take me home.
Jeanette – I feel that you loved and still love the boyfriend. I believe this why he is taking you home. It seems that the connection still exist – a sort of love even in death, a sharing both ways.
Tony
I have had multiple dreams where I am having a loving and sexual relationship with my boyfriend’s brother. Sometimes the setting is outdoors, and other times it’s in my apartment. He is the one always approaching me and saying loving things to me, and I wake up feeling extremely guilty. Any thoughts?
There is a wide chasm between the dream life and your waking life Danielle. There is no guilt in dreams, as there is no death, or even a definite gender. It sounds as if you fancy your boyfriend’s brother, but are guilty about it. Obviously in the dream world there are not the consequences you would face in the waking world. So look at what dreams follow to see what they comment on your love life.
Tony
I have a recurring dream where I cannot escape a building. I am always frantic and feel lost and confused. The setting varies, but in each dream I am being chased.
Danielle – When I look at a person’s dream I try to do so from a very different perspective – that of the dream world. And that is very different from your normal ‘in the body’ view.
In the body view being chased could be dangerous. From the dreams point of view being chased means you are avoiding something you need to know about, even if the meeting has difficult feelings. So while awake, sit quietly and imagine yourself back in the dream, and instead of running away, stand and meet what comes toward you.
It is all a virtual reality – the dream – and nothing can hurt you. All you will meet is feelings, emotions, like watching a film.

Hi,
I had this dream last night that i was in a car with my dad and brother, and a celebrity was driving. She drove us full speed into a local lake and i woke up scared. I’ve had a similar dream before.
Could you please explain them?
Lisa – To really understand dreams it is helpful to have fuller description. So I have to ask myself that the celebrity who was driving so recklessly, how would you describe her? Do you see her as successful, and do you want to go in that direction in life?
You see, this dream could easily be pointing out to you that if you try to copy her reckless way of life you could end if in dangerous life situation. Much better to follow your own inner voice and life what is the real you.
Tony
I have a dream where i see the room that I am in but there is a man standing next to my bed. I feel the need to scream and then wake up screaming, does this have a name because i was reading a book in which a character experiences a similar thing?
Dear Lord Annabelle there could be a lot of possible meanings. I think it depends why you were screaming. Was it because you were afraid the man might attack you; that he might sexually assault you; that it was like ghost and so frightening?
Just think about it.
Tony
