Goat

Rutting masculine sexuality, or if a female goat the fertility and procreative power; ability to climb, personally or socially; tough ability to survive difficulties; sometimes connected with repressed natural drives which become reversed or evil/live when symbolising the devil – or the animal drives or instinctive and pooled consciousness prior to ego development. If you dream of the goat god Pan, see girl in the wood.

It can also depict somebody butting into your life, or conflict with someone if the goat is attacking. Also sure-footedness or meeting difficulties with ease.

If you have kept goats it may well represent responsibility or caring. If you have bred them you might use the goat to depict your own reproductive urges.

In the Bible the goat represents the bad guys in the phrase ‘separating the sheep from the goats’.

As an astrological sign the goat is the sign of Capricorn. For Capricornians the goat may represent their basic character. Capricorn is a “Cardinal” “Earth” sign. It is the sign of hard, long struggle, and finally, high attainment. This suggests a slow starter, somebody who makes it late in life. It’s symbol is a compound creature, half goat, half fish. The front portion has the head and front legs of a goat, the hind portion a fish’s body and tail. The “Goat,” with only his front legs, is patiently and perseveringly struggling to climb a mountain, but is handicapped and hindered all the time by having to drag with him his Piscean after-part. This represents a stage in human evolution during which humans were developing personal identity, but their instinctive drive were still powerful and difficult to deal with. It still depicts this in a person’s life today. The Capricornian is said to be ambitious with definite aims and purposes. They are patient and perseverance in overcoming difficulties. Thus they finally succeed in the attainment of their Zodiacal goal.

Example: I dreamt I was in a large room sitting near one wall. In front of me was a nanny goat, pregnant with very large teats. The goat asked me, or I knew that she needed, milking, because there was too much pressure of milk in her udder. I started to do this and noticed the goat was very squat, powerful and with tremendous physical stability. That is, its shape made it difficult to unbalance. I seemed to know how to milk the goat. A backwards and forwards motion was necessary, and no squeezing needed. It was like masturbation. As I did this I watched the milk flow on the floor, and thought what a waste it was, but felt soon her baby could feed. Then I watched her give birth. It was a very quick and easy thing, but I believe it was a human child, not a goat. I don’t know if the goat was then a woman, but a woman also gave birth, and I realised while still dreaming that I had dreamt twice about giving birth and this was because a birth process was at work in my unconscious. Paul.

This dream shows the many associations we have with the goat, everything from the procreation of motherhood to sex and masturbation. In fact Paul says of his dream, “As I remembered the dream I realised what some of it meant. The goats milk pressure is the pressure that builds up making it necessary for me to masturbate. That it is milk means it is my self-giving, my flow of love to others, wasted on the floor. The dream suggests this will soon change, and something is being born. Also the fact it is a breast yet it is being masturbated, means childhood needs for the breast are developing into real genital needs.

Idioms: Get my goat; an old goat, meaning an ageing man still lusting after women.

Useful Questions and Hints:

What can I understand from how the goat is portrayed in the dream?

What am I doing with the goat and what does this suggest?

Does the goat in any way portray elements of masculinity or femininity, maybe connected with mother or motherhood?

Most nights I never remember dreams, but I remember one from last night very vividly, and it was odd. I was in my backyard, then I heard a noise, I went through my garage into my ally where I found a baby goat. It was really small and cute like a puppy, so I snuck it into my house and let it hop around. Then it turned into a big black Great Dane and I was so shocked I convinced myself that didn’t happen, and it turned back into a baby goat, then I woke up, what on earth could this mean if not just nonsense?

Hi Mr. Crisp. I just woke up from a disturbing dream, researched, and found you. I hope you might be able to explain….

In my dream, I was asleep. I awoke to the sensation of someone nursing at my breast although I haven’t breastfed in over 10 years. I opened my eyes and I see a black goat. I remember thinking, why does he persist? There’s no milk to be had. But the longer he continues, I realized I enjoy it and am NOT disturbed by it. I touch his head, his hair feels like silk. I glanced up at the lamp on my dresser because I see something move and it looks like a very large rat on the shade but it’s in shadows so I can’t make it out. My attention is drawn back to my billy goat. I make him let go of one and he moans (not an animalistic sound!) and take the other and BAM! I am thrown into full blown release! I try to get him to move his forelegs but he refuses to let me up and I get the feeling that he wanted so much more from me, that he wanted to DO so much more TO me. Immediately after that, I wake up for real because I am prone to Charlie Horses and had to jump up to stretch one out. I am extremely freaked out by this because all my life, I’ve been taught that the black goat in a dream is evil and when the tone is sexual, he wishes to copulate with you! I never quite believed it but this dream was disturbing! Please give me some insight.

In reading through your links from above, I’ve been attempting the “Talking as a Dream Character” idea. I don’t know if it’s because I have no practice, but I am seeing nothing. Maybe I am still a little too disturbed? If it helps to have more information on me, I do have a high drive. Am I simply sexually repressed? That doesn’t feel like it could be the whole answer. Maybe part, but not the whole.

I had a strange dream I was in my mother’s house(where I live) I was getting ready to leave the house when I liked on the back patio and saw a huge statuesque half goat half woman. It was a beautiful creature or entity or whatever it was,I banged on the glass to try to scare it away, it looked at me slowly, and gave me this up and down look, like from my head to my feet then back to my head and rolled it’s eyes, it then rose up and entered the house, it began asking me questions about my life as if it had some sort of solution for me,I then grabbed my car keys and told it I have to go, it didn’t like that and tried to take my keys,It was getting angry and telling me no I do not and that I’m lying all the while tugging on my keys, I then woke up. Any ideas?

Jordan – Are you by any chance born in the sign of Capricorn? Just a long shot.

But your dream is very important and can give you a lot of information and personal power. You see we are all half human and half animal, although we do a terrible job of admitting it or allowing the wonderful instinctive power and knowledge the animal side of is could share with us. I often say to people you ride on the back of an ancient beast. The ancient beast is your body, and our conscious self is the modern and recent rider of it. Some ‘riders’ do not understand their animal needs – and the fact that we have several levels of brain that are independent of each other proves this. See http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/brain-levels-and-dreams/

So your reaction to meeting the beauty of your whole nature is an example of how out of touch we are with our heritage. It was your reaction to it that produced the anger – wouldn’t you be angry if having given yourself all your life to keeping your body healthy, and carrying the awful load of the personality, you wouldn’t even be listened to?

      Hello Tony,
I had a dream that I pooped a goat skull and other junk items in a toilet bowl. I was very surprised in the dream to see what I had done. And seeing the goat skull made me puzzled…
I appreciate if you have any comments!
      Thanks!

i dreamt of a very stubborn goat, it was pregnant and was reluctant to get off my bed. i came in the room and found it there. i went on the bed and tried kicking it of, suddenly looked like it had human legs but a goat body and head. it just kept kicking me as if to say, no you get of,it’s my bed. i was getting very annoyed and started kicking and that woke me up. at my old school, we had stubborn goats, but not that kind. i’m still annoyed by it. what does it mean?

    -Tony Crisp 2013-10-09 8:37:46

Brown – It strikes me you are having a fight with your own natural urges. You are stubborn just as the goat is. Remember that we are all mammals with similar urges, but because of our personality we often cut off our connection with the mammal inside us – it may be the urge to become pregnant that you are kicking out of bed.

What it is important to realise that that is a natural urge for a woman, and to deny it is to deny your own energy. The thing is that you do not need to let yourself become pregnant because it is your own power of creativity that can be express in many ways than producing a physical baby. Deny the urge is to kill your creativity. See http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/brain-levels-and-dreams/#mammalbrain

      -Brown 2013-10-11 16:16:32

the only urge i’m fighting is my feelings towards someone because he’s using me. at least if feels like that. comes by when he needs me, and when i need him, excuses and
MIA. i’m not feeling creative at all at this point, if anything i feel helpless. so maybe there’s another translation?

I had a dream where I was feeding a black and white, presumably male goat with large horns.
It belonged to my neighbor and he was busy so the door to the goat enclosure was wide open, I couldn’t close it and the goat made an attempt to run away, so I calmed him down and then ran and got some hay. When I came back the goat was sprawled on the floor with his chin on the floor, calm and looking up at me. When I fed him some hay, he was still on the ground but he was eating it. What does this mean?

-valery Hutchy 2013-10-01 7:26:19

Pls I just woke up and I am very disturbed by this dream. I was dreaming I was having sex with a goat.

-Bailey 2013-07-11 17:08:03

I’ve had about three dreams of goats in the past week. All of them involved a young goat (can’t tell the sex of it) unexpectedly coming into my possession and me worrying about what on earth I would do with it. They were all cheerful dreams, but with an overlaying disturbing feel. That is with the exception of the last one, which was really worrying.
I dreamed that (once again) a young goat had come into my possession unexpectedly. I was headed to my annual festivals (which I actually am next week) and I was painting the goat orange and yellow with body paint. I hadn’t finished painting when the goat suddenly fell to it’s knees in pain. When I looked to see what was wrong, it’s toes were swollen and hurt and it’s claws were loose and infected. I then began searching for some fabric to use as a bandage and couldn’t find anything. It was really perplexing.
Any ideas?
Thanks!
Peace <3

-MJ 2013-06-21 23:14:35

I had a dream of goat attacking and over eating he sees.. Im very scared coz even people he killed and even ate it… So weired for a real goat… As I remember he chases my mother and trying to kill her.. I got a knife and stab the goat… So im thinking he was dead but suddenly brought back to life again like a demon so powerful and attacks us. Please help me whats the meaning of my weired dream?

    -Tony Crisp 2013-06-24 8:18:08

MJ – First of all you are dreaming and so you are in a very different world that does not have the same rules as your waking life. So of course nothing can hurt you or be killed in the dream world; therefore the goat you killed was not a demon, as everything in the dream world can regenerate over and over. After all dreams are like a computer game where you can kill or be killed a thousand times and yet there you are ready to play again.

Also the goat is a part of you that you project outward onto the screen of your mind.

What does it mean? It means you have a conflict about your feeling connections with your mother. You are frightened of losing her and her dying. What I find again and again is that people are often so shocked by the death of someone, as though it were a surprise. We all know we are going to die, and honestly we haven’t a clue when. So it is wise to realise that someone we care about will die, and even we will face our own demise. It is therefore worth not walking about with blinkers on trying to avoid the fact. It is worth thinking about what you want to do with your mother now, and what you would like to say to them now. Do not run around in a daze when they die.

i was half asleep and in a room were my fiance and his dad were sleeping too.. i dont know if i was dreaming but i can definitely hear the bith of them snore when in the background somewhere outside the building i hear a goat making a sound, crying or something, i can hear it clear as day.. i wish toknow what this means.. i live in the heart of a very busy city.. i dont think you would see farm animals around here.. please help..

    -Tony Crisp 2012-12-24 9:52:55

Sarah – The thing is that we are all dual beings and live two very different lives – the outer waking life and the inner unconscious life. Because we are never taught this in our education system we become so confused when it shows through into out waking life. See http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/what-we-need-to-remember-about-us/#DualBeing

What you were experiencing was a waking lucid dream. In other words our dream – inner world – is still active while our conscious mind is awake. Se we can see or hear things from one world while still active in another. This is what usually psychics are experiencing, often without knowing the full story behind it. I wanted some help with a dream. I had a dream that a red ram (being my sun sign capricorn) attacked my dog, who looked as though she was going to dye & then attacked me specially my arm which I couldn’t get away & then I work up.

    -Tony Crisp 2012-08-05 13:11:03

Ndembow – This sounds as if you are in conflict with your own basic strength. This is not uncommon. Our personality if often out of connection with our inborn power. The ‘you’ only exists because of massive forces that we usually call the unconscious – which is not a good name for it. I call it Life – and Life has all the potential you are born with but it cannot express because we oppose it as you did in your dream – frightened that it would kill your ‘dog’. See http://dreamhawk.com/dream-dictionary/dog/

It is difficult to explain this, but the nearest I can get at the moment is in – http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/what-we-need-to-remember-about-dreaming/#Paralyzed
