About

Welcome to DreamHawk.com, one of the longest running dream interpretation sites in existence.
Millions of people have accessed its database of dream symbols, interpretations and reference material.

The site began in the mid-eighties on CompuServe, and later was called Waves. It has over 6000 individual pages of information.

About the Author

Tony Crisp is an internationally renowned expert on dreams and their interpretation. His bestselling Dream Dictionary: An A to Z Guide to Understanding Your Unconscious Mind has become a classic of the genre. Based on material from thousands of dreams gathered during three decades of research, the Dream Dictionary has been translated into seven languages worldwide. See Tony’s Books

Tony has worked at the vanguard of the personal development and self-help movement for more than fifty years, co-founding in the 1970s one of the first human growth centres in the UK. In addition to teaching and leading groups in self-development and yoga, Tony has worked variously as a photographer, journalist, writer and broadcaster both in the UK and abroad. He was LBC’s resident dream therapist for seven years.

Tony was also the earliest writer on dreams who attempted a dream dictionary not based on the more rigid dream theories derived from Freudian or Jungian ideas. His book Do You Dream, published in 1971, was one of the first of his many other books about dreams and the inner life, and included a dream dictionary.

He has five children and currently lives alone in a cottage in Wales. For a more detailed look at Tony’s life see Biographical Information.

But more important than that is that I am an ‘End User’. That is I present myself not as an authority on dreams but as an end user who has used dreams to survive, to find the unborn part of me, and that it has taken me most of my life. As an end user I dealt in the dreams I was using. In this way I earned a living and hopefully showed other people how to ‘use’ dreams as well. I had an intense feeling with this, as if it was vitally important, and that presenting myself in this way would alter the whole direction of my life.

My mother had a dream about her mother A white Russian married to a German (who passed 5 years ago). They spent 80 years together starting in Lithuania, then living (running from the Bolsheviks) in many places (Poland, Germany, Vienna-mostly DP camps) hence a long history (my mother is an only child).
Last night my mother dreamed of her mother in the coffin (at the Russian Orthodox Convent) in church talking about wanting her passport as she needed to travel? She was very angry and demanding it-very typical of my grandmother who rules with an iron fist but loved, adored and spoiled us all. As she was in the coffin she was re-arranging the furniture and clothing (she was a fashion designer) replacing the old stuff with beautiful antiques and silk curtains, silk settees, bergeres being placed by hired workers from my grandmother in the coffin. My mother as her if you’re embalmed how can you be doing this? There were other people around whom my mother knew but they thought she was making it up. Also, she was afraid of my grandmother bien dead but talking.
My mother during all of this was running around in her nightgown and was rather distressed as all her clothes were there but put into another room. The house itself was beautiful like their apartment in Vienna & Paris.
Any thoughts would be appreciated

I truly have enjoyed reading your life story and your experiences. I have posted a dream, I just hope you have the time to interpret it. I am going to buy your new dream book. I dream everyday…in color and vivid dreams. I could write a novel in what I see in my dreams…that is how detailed my dreams are. I hope you are okay after your stroke. One request, can you please offer your books on walmart.com?

    -Tony Crisp 2013-11-10 11:44:31

Joanna – Thank you for writing what you have. I feel we create each other, so feel a bit more me.

Please do try writing. It is a wonderful way to climb up those stairs of realisation.

I was not aware that I could offer my books on Walmart, but will explore the possibility.

Hi Tony,

I am from India and as you know, we do believe in our Gods and Goddesses. A few months back i had a dream where a female voice – most probably, of Mother Kali since I had not seen her face, but only her feet which are usually placed atop a lotus – said that I wont be living long… I may try to save myself, but chances are slim. I do believe her words – I worship her the most and majority of my inner thoughts are spoken to her. I was so upset as I have a 3 year old special child and I felt that I need to be alive for at least a few more years, at least for her sake… it was difficult for me to wake up after the dream and I felt so helpless!

can u please help me understand this?

Just fyi, am very scared of death and the dead in general!

    -Tony Crisp 2013-10-09 8:16:58

Meethi – You must know that Kali is a great initiator. She is a force in nature and in each of us that can, if we open ourselves to the wonder that She is can lead us into the mysteries, the great truths underlying our existence.

I do not think that Kali is talking about your physical death, but She is promising you that she will initiate you into the wonder of death and then of birth. She is a dual power, giving knowledge of death and life. If you can stand before her without fear she will give you the knowledge of eternal life.

    I give you my blessings.

    Tony

I was dreaming that I was asking to die. In my dream a man appeared behind an old style door that was half glass and half wood demanding entrance. The dream was in black and white and had the appearance of the 50s (which is my age group). I said “get out” forcefully and built corridors and additional doors all of which I slammed shut. The man simply answered, “I will use the other way then.”

I recently had a dream where I was taking my mum to a hospital to see a friend of hers, as we got there and went in the hospital looked like a shopping mall. to the right of the place was hospital areas, but to the left was takeaway food/shops. as we went in on the hospital window to the right I saw a former girl that I had feelings for. (until we had an argument and now don’t speak) she saw me through the window and look like she didn’t wanna speak/look at me and walked off. so I took my mum to see her friend, but I was constantly looking back to see if she’d come out to see me. while my mum was gone talking to her friend, I went to the far end of the hospital/shop into a room where I saw friends/people as couples holding hands and so on. I left the room and looked back in from the window and saw a woman really excited and constantly looking at me joyfully. her boyfriend proposed to her and she went over the moon. as I left I saw from the entrance of the hospital my the girl I had feeling for leave the hospital room she was in and go into a takeaway shop. as I was going to talk to her my dream ended. what does this mean?

-kim 2013-08-16 11:30:58

my husband had died in 2001 n i keep having dreams about him and now my father who passed 2008 is coming into my dreams there are other love ones as well that passed that are coming into my dreams what does this mean

    -Tony Crisp 2013-08-20 7:59:24

Kim – Without knowing a description of the dreams it is difficult to be sure of their meaning. We all tend to dream about those who have passed on. Most people are often totally unaware of the experience they take in and how it interacts with them when we love someone. In other words the memories and experience we gather unconsciously change us and are not lost. It is part of you and is symbolised in dreams as a person or event. You have taken in millions of bit of memory, lessons learnt, life experiences, along with all the feelings or problems met by loving and living with someone and they are what makes you the person you are. Your dreams tend to put all that in the image of the past person when you are dealing with the influences left in you from the relationship.

But it could also mean you have the ability to communicate with the dead. See http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/questions/#TalkingDead

    Tony

-Tony Crisp 2013-08-04 12:45:06

Sally – I think this is about you coming to terms with death, for death is a very important part of life. Unfortunately it is not on show in the way your dream dramatised it.

In every moment of our life we face the possibility of death. In fact we only live because we are constantly dying. Our body is all the time dying as thousands of cells die, and in doing so the new and living body can continue. If we allow ourselves to realise that it illustrates the meaning of the phoenix – it is consumed by the flames, and yet it arose anew. We have the fire of life within us, we eat and feed the fire that consumes us and gives birth to us continuously. It is the warmth of our body, the warmth, even passion, of our emotions and that is life – continuous through death.

Example: This was not a dream, but a direct perception during sleep. I saw that a large part of my being was dying, and another part coming to life. Andy

But your dream shows you that your feelings about death are preventing you from the nourishment you can get from everyday life.

I discovered your work about 18 years ago, due to such crazy, wierd dreams I was having. I was afraid to sleep sometimes. I needed to know what was going on. I learned so much from your work and just wanted to thank you. I’ve actually impressed my therapist by my ability to interpret my dreams. He said I am better at him than him! You are the best and I really appreciate your work.

I dreamt I was walking to my car when I saw an owl on top of it, scratching it with its feet. As I got closer the owl flew away. However, I then realised there were 2 more. One of them spoke to me. It told me that a meteor would strike Earth. Shortly after I am at a different place, with my mum when I saw a huge meteor that was very close, about to strike. At the point of contact with Earth it felt as if some kind of repel/attract (like magnets) process was taking place. Earth shook each time but somehow I wasn’t afraid. I felt as if I was at the right place and would survive.
The dream was so vivid. The experience of Earth shaking in my dream was a bit like an earthquake. That’s what woke me up.
It was 7 AM and no news reports on TV of an earthquake where I live.

Good morning to you,

I had a very odd dream. I dreamt I was in a forest with a man I could not see the tree I was by had branches on the forest floor but they were completly cover in white apple blossom, while looking in wonder at the tree which was also covered trunk included. A bird swooped down as large as an eagle but looked like a wood pigeon or dove as it was very light in colour. It then picked up a branch and as it soared through a beautiful sky with the sun in the horizon it changed from a branch to an arrow all covered in the blossom but the arrow had a cross through the middle of it. I then woke up. Could you possibly explain what this dream could mean, I look forward to hearing from you soon. Kindest regards Liz

I had this really trippy dream, where I was in this alley full of junk. It was really messed up cause the entire alley was in full light, not daylight, but house light, it had that yellowish color to it. Anyways there was a brick wall on my left and a building on my right. Infront of me was a dark green dumpster. I stepped close towards it and looked inside. Garbage lay at the bottom, and over top of that a body of water. The water was clear enough to see what was inside, but yet murky enough to know it was polluted. I noticed there were fish swimming around in it… really SCARY FISH. I somehow got a perspective inside the water, I could see them swimming, and I saw their faces…. they looked like human heads with fish tails swimming in circles. Their faces were, so strong and bitter, demon like with jaws that looked to cut your arm off with one bite, but again they were only the size of a human head. One of them had a goldish color and swam up to me. In my mind, I was saying, ” how do they live in such terrible conditions? ” I was astonished the fact that it was such a disgusting environment, and these things were actually alive!? I left the fish to explore more of my surroundings I am guessing, cause I don’t know how I ended up where I was after that. I was somehow in the building next to the alley way that was to my right. It was an abandonned apartment building it seemed. The light from outside reflected off the empty room walls and allowed me to visibly see everything inside the apartment room I was in. I was in the living room it seemed, the walls had paint peeling off of them, it looked as though no one had been there for a long time. I left that room and ended up in a hallway with a window at the end of it. As I walked down the hallway I realized that this apartment had been next to the alley with the dumpster, so I entered a final room to my right, I wanted to look and see the fish again. Boom!!! in the room to my right and out that window there is the gold fish! BUT it expanded into a monster! IT WAS THIS GIANT GOLD DRAGON TYPE HEAD EATING A SNAKE! It’s teeth sharp, and skin scaley…. it was messed haha, I immediately woke up after that… It was weird because I had this dream right before I had began a gambling problem…. my gambling problem took roughly four years of my life :(. I have found help and been able to stay away from it. Anyways that’s my dream.
