Dream Dictionary

Online Dream Dictionary & Encyclopedia

by Tony Crisp

The latest edition of the Dream Dictionary, the result of some fifty years experience of working with dreams and their interpretation. The Dream Dictionary which encompassing articles on a vast range of topics. This gives the reader an unparalleled insight into the study of dreams and the inner life. But there are an enormous amount of Features that cover a range of topics about dreams and the inner life.

The aim of the Dream Dictionary is to help you make connections between your dreams and your everyday life; to discover more fully the powerful emotions and reactions that unconsciously direct your decisions and responses in waking. This is not an attempt to give you merely ideas to play with, to agree or disagree with, like fortune telling. It can lead to real insights which empower you to make more of yourself, and find your way through the many decisions with which life confronts you.

Learn how to Interpret Your Dream

I know how much you might like to skip the Introduction to Dream Dictionary, and if you are tempted to do so, I wholeheartedly ask you to read Summing Up. Without understanding the things given there you are likely to completely miss the point of understanding your dreams.

You can start using the Dream Dictionary by entering a dream image into the Search box below and clicking the search symbol – or you can read some fuller information below about the dictionary and how best to use it.

Your dreams can become vortexes of power to transform your life, and to enhance your perceptions. There is no ‘wave a magic wand’ route to this. It will not happen because you read a great book, or look at a good dream dictionary. Those things might help, but the real magic lies in whether you can enter into your dream in the right way. (Try using Meaning of Your Dream).

What does my dream mean? – How to explore your dream meanings

It is important in reading the definitions of dream images to realise that not every possible meaning can be covered. So please see if you get the idea of what is being said and allow your own imagination/feelings to fill in the meaning.

There are several ways you can understand the meanings held in your dreams, and there are several levels. The first is an easily understood level, followed by greater depths:

  1. You can enter a key word in the search box above. The Dream Dictionary contains interpretations on almost any type of dream subject. So if you dreamt of a flying saucer landing in a field, and aliens getting out and taking a baby, a snake, and a pregnant dog back into the saucer, you could search separately for each of these subjects in the Dream Dictionary. Find the entry for flying saucer; then the entry for dog, baby, snake,  pregnant, and so on. For each entry, find further related entries by looking under ‘Similar Articles’ on the right hand side of the page. Then see Techniques for Exploring your Dreams.
  2. Each entry gives the general meaning of the dream subject, just as an encyclopedia or dictionary does for a word. Several possible meanings are given. This is because as with our speech the position of the word – the context – gives it special meanings. So a hot dog would be quite different to a black dog, dog-end or dead dog. Therefore, when you read an entry which has several different meanings, sometimes with a ‘;’ between, it simply means any one of them could apply, which means you need to think about the feelings in your dream, the context, the other imagery used. Please do not fall into the trap that one reviewer made of saying that the whole dictionary is about sex. Of course sex is one meaning among many others. So use your own sense of your dream as well as any definitions given.
  3. To really explore the meaning it is useful to use the Dream Dictionary as it is designed, rather than arrive at a ‘thought out’ interpretation. To see a working example of this see Dream Interpretation Example One.

A Note About the Author: Tony Crisp

I have been interested in the health of mind and body since my early teens. I began writing about these subjects in 1956. My fascination for what lay under the surface of the mind led me personally to explore the unconscious using dreams and other mental and physical disciplines. From 1972 – 94 I worked as a psychotherapist using an eclectic, Humanistic Psychology approach which included dream work and releasing the secrets the body holds. My books include Do You Dream; Mind and MovementThe Instant Dream Book; Life’s Little Secrets and Liberating The Body and many more. See My Books.

During those years I worked as a dream columnist for The Daily Mail and She Magazine. I was the regular dream interpreter for the London Broadcasting Company; I ran Teletext’s dream page on UK television’s Channel Four; and also for New Zealand Teletext, and now I run this website giving dream help as well as many features on subjects connected with the human inner world.

Throughout more than five decades I have been involved in a personal search for the secrets of mind and spirit. In those years I have also taught thousands of people techniques of deep relaxation, meditation, and methods of self exploration using dreams. Wanting to dig deep I explored the use of dreams and taught individuals and groups of people how to use these visions of the night to discover and heal the deepest issues in themselves, and to touch the high ground of their spiritual awareness. I worked for twenty years as a psychotherapist using several approaches, one of which was a way of honouring the body as a doorway to the unconscious mind, the emotions and spiritual experience. See The LifeStream.

During the sixty years of seeking the wild wondrous beasts of the mind and spirit I dared my own inner adventure. But I also travelled with other people as an ordinary person, not a therapist, sharing their experience of fear and wonder as they unveiled and set loose their fountain of perception. I have travelled countless dream pathways, traversed the timeless with those using awareness enhancing drugs, and wrestled with the vitality of the body as people mimed and shouted their deepest intuitions through movement, dance and voice.

And usually its a pair of brothers(different each time) and another person(cant remember exactly who, once it was my ex bf I think). Weird right? Why would I have this dream? I am married and had a baby over a year ago.

Hi – It would help you to understand your dreams, if you would read – http://dreamhawk.com/news/summing-up/http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/features-found-on-site/http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/acting-on-your-dream/#BeingPersonorhttp://dreamhawk.com/dream-dictionary/getting-at-your-dreams-meaning/

    Tony

Dear Jane – You are so mixed up, thinking you are nothing but a physical body which means having physical sperm to form a new being. I am not sure even if I explained you would believe that you are also formed of something other than physical cells.

Most people feel certain their body is them, and are certain that their body is who they are. But dreams have a very different view of the body. They show again and again if anyone takes the time to record their dreams over a period of time that we all have a body, a soul and a spirit. The body is in constant change and will age and die. Dreams see it as like a car that we can use to get some necessary life experiences, but the driver can leave the car and the car does not define the driver. The soul consists of all the personal thoughts, decisions, likes, dislikes and memories of the person – of this lifetime. It can be quite limited in its perceptions because we are only aware of only 1% of visible light and 1% of the range of sound – so we are really blind and deaf, and yet we are so sure we know the world and what it means. See http://dreamhawk.com/news/there-is-a-huge-change-happening/

If you read the above you may realise that you have many levels that can manifest through the body. A level that science is still wrestling with is consciousness – mind – sentience which is something you have. It enables you to experience everything, without it you would be really dead; but you ignore this wonder and see only things outside you.

But your dream describes something else, the birth of a child that has no physical life, but is a dream baby. It is formed from three or more influences in your life, for when you think about a lover, a friend or a person you know, you are only taking in your thoughts, impressions and feelings about them. So many people do not realise that they have an inner person equally as powerful as the external person you know. You have taken in millions of bits of memory, lessons learnt, life experiences along with all the feelings or problems met by meeting or living with them, and they change you and make you the person you are. The memories and experience we gather unconsciously change us and are not lost. It is part of you and is symbolised in dreams as a person or event. Such an inner person can appear in dreams because you still carry the memories or impressions of them, and so they influenced what you hold within you.

So those past influences are together forming a new part of you. Your dream baby is very special to you. Like any baby, it is something new and vulnerable that has come to life – come to your life. The important question is what is it that is new and growing in your love, in your work, or in yourself? Such a baby is a new part of yourself that you have formed out of your life experiences and so is enlarging you. Take care of it and see what it adds to your life.

Hi, Many years ago I bought your book but the binding came apart. Then with the app reveloution I bought the app. Both brilliant but the latter I can no longer find on the app store and I have written here several times to ask if there is one or whether a replacement is being developed our whether I can get permission to develop one.

Many thanks for providing such a great resource.

I had a dream my husband was at work. He got electrocuted by a power line…which he does have a career in. In the dream I was so traumatized, scared, yelling. I was in a hotel room with mymomwhen I got the news. (Not sure what we were doing), but i get a knock at the door. A man comes in n tells me about my husband. I rush to a room by a “ICU” sign and he was in a hospital bed sleeping.

Hi Tony

Your dream interpretations are a fascinating read. Enjoy your website a great deal. Could you explain the following dream I had?

It initially involved me being amongst passengers on an aeroplane, then all of us were in a theatre (on land), However we were all still seated in the same pattern, configuration as on the aeroplane, but this time in the theatre.

I thought this is strange. It was more strange that random passengers had just disappeared, their belongings remaining strewn in the seat where they sat. They just vanished.

So I got up and walked out the theatre, but ended up in an old style antique looking home, dark wooden floors, old painting on walls, house hadn’t been dusted in a long time, it was old with a rectangular winding staircase. I peered over the bannister and realised I was many, many, many floors up disappearing into darkness. It was quite spooky.

The “passengers” that I was with began to walk away in all directions, mainly going downstairs. I stayed where I was, quite intrigued. Just sat on the floor.

Now I had a tray of food and drink before me, I picked it up and rested it precariously on the bannister. But then accidentally knocked it and it went over through the gap in the middle of the winding stairs and fell and fell and fell. It eventually made a feint crashing sound. I looked over the banniester and saw something looking back at me from the floor below. Was a demon in human form, not very happy. I wasn’t scared, but then a bigger demon confronted me, floated up between the bannister. Another demon was beside me, and by this point I said out loud “give me the best that you’ve got”. The floating demon then kept changing form, still a demon, but sometimes monsterous, other times covered, etc. I just kept looking, not scared. The demon next to me was female, long black hair, black eyes, very pale. She grabbed my left hand tightly, the floating demon grabbed my right hand tightly. They both started pulling me to go with them.

I knew I was dreaming, I was lucid dreaming when I was confronted by the floating demon. So I wasn’t scared, just angry and wanted to show I was stronger than it.

As they both pulled me and I said “oh really? You want to see something? Watch this”. My intention was to throw the demon on my right (the floating demon) aggressively through the wall with great force! My hand instead slipped out of its grip, and I woke up.

I had the strong sensation of having being gripped on both hands when I woke up. The feeling of someone tightly squeezing my hands. My right foot also felt as though it was held.

In a way I was annoyed I woke up. I knew I was in full control of my dream. I had the intention to deal with the demons quickly and make my way over to a party. But I wanted to hurt them and show them who was boss.

I could hazard a guess at what this means, but I can’t realise a positive reason for it.

Thanks for your time Tony
Naz

AHO Tony. Please interpret this vision. It starts out with me looking everywhere for my wife. When I find her she has her back to me as I approach her to bring her close to me she is instantly far away again as I observed her like in a bleachers as I was on a floor like in a basketball court. The next part of my vision was I was suddenly in a small but very old home the house looked like it was built in the 1800’s in the living room of the house was a chair that I was sitting in with an old tv that I was watching. Suddenly a native American grandmother dressed in a fine calfskin dress with red and white beads on her shoulders began to speak with me. I could not understand the physical words she spoke aloud but as she spoke she was showing me images of what I saw as my ancestors being killed and dragged away. It was very emotional and we were both crying as she spoke. I stood up from fhe chair to embrace her and try and comfort her. I then sat back down in my chair She then walked on my left side as I was still in my chair and I as soon turned my head to view the tv in the living room I was suddenly standing in the middle of a river watching a native American man with 2 feathers in his hair and red paint on his face looking at the sun with his arms stretched to the sky. He suddenly put himself under water as he did I went from observing him to being him as he was underwater and standing back up. When I was standing back up from the river I was suddenly back in the house sitting in the chair and I had water coming from my nose and eyes and as I was coughing trying to catch my breath the grandmother came from my right side and put what looked like a large antler horn in my mouth to blow in it. The sound it made was very low and loud. I then got up off the chair and ran to the bathroom to a mirror. As I looked at my reflection in the mirror I started looking sick and the blue of my eyes began to melt. As I kept looking at myself in the mirror my reflection morphed from myself to a Indian cheif with a full cheif head dress. Please help interpret. AHO MATAQUYOASIN

Hi – It would help you to understand your dreams, if you would read – http://dreamhawk.com/news/summing-up/ and also http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/features-found-on-site/ which has so much information in.

Nothing can replace your own ability to understand your dream. With a little effort you can do this by practising what is described in – http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/acting-on-your-dream/#BeingPerson or http://dreamhawk.com/dream-dictionary/getting-at-your-dreams-meaning/

    Tony

Christopher – In dreams looking at your wife means scrutinising her, good or bad. Or seeing what she is as a person – under the surface. She shows you her back; is she not enjoying being close to you? But you must realise that you have an inner wife that shows in your dream. Many people do not realise that they have an inner wife equally as powerful as an external wife. You have taken in millions of bit of memory, lessons learnt, life experiences, along with all the feelings or problems met by loving and living with your wife, and they are what makes you the person you are. This is true even if your wife was never there for you – you still have all the memories of her not being there for you filed under ‘wife’. The memories and experience we gather unconsciously change us and are not lost. It is part of you and is symbolised in dreams as a person or event. Such an inner wife can appear in dreams because you are deeply influenced by what you hold within you.

Watching TV can be like travelling to strange places and meeting new experiences. So that led to you standing in a river and seeing the Native American Grandmother. The river is the flow of Life that flows through you – ever changing yet ever the same. Grandmothers are the doorway through which your tribal life came into being, and bring us that much nearer to the source of Life. They are also the wonderful gateway to the ancestors and their collective wisdom. So she opened your awareness to the wisdom of your people.

Dream images are like icons on a computer screen – you have to ‘click’ on your dream images to make them come alive.
Thinking about them doesn’t work. You need to open yourself to the magic of them. To make them into the wonderful gateways they are you may have to learn certain skills. Maybe by using http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/acting-on-your-dream/#BeingPerson

She showed you the past that you inherited and must deal with or transform. Please read Voice of My Dead Forebears. It is long but it will explain a lot about what the Grandmother passed in to you.

You were then under water, meaning you went under the surface of your mind into what you are normally not aware of; often called the visionary ability. So looking in the mirror your vision was of you in a past dwelling place – a past body.

Remember what I said about icons, for the image was a doorway for you to open into great memory.

    I share Life with you.

Tony thank you the reply. I have one more question if you don’t mind answering. Can you please tell me what the antler bugle symbolizes. It was long and it had like a spiral shape, the color was white with brown streaks. Thank you so much for you time

Christopher – I didn’t attempt to try to interpret the bugle because it could be so many things. So I suggest, because ones own associations are the main factor deciding the dreams meaning, that you try using http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/acting-on-your-dream/#BeingPerson

It seems to me it has some powerful symbolic tribal meaning. From the rest of the dream it may be about the signal that you have or will achieve something.

Hi, I had a dream I was in a different house as I was looking out the window I saw a fireball hit the ground from the sky, it didn’t make any impact as it hit, but I could see sparks and the ground burning not far from the house, I shouted to my daughter what had happened and we were about to run out to have a look, we were both excited to see what it was. As she opened the front door for us to leave she turned and looked at me, my ex partner was standing at the door (haven’t seen him for 7 years) he saw the look of shock on my face and started to back away, I went up to him, he looked like he had been on a expediation for a long time and spoke very softly like he was weary, he was dressed in old camping gear for cold weather. He said he was so sorry for what happened and that it was his fault and wanted to talk. I said yes can we talk later but can he come and look at the fireball site first. We were walking down to the site and I noticed I was disabled in the dream. (I am disabled in real life but it usually never shows up in dreams) I woke up then but I felt so happy to see him again.
