Your attempt to wake up seemed to bring about sleep paralysis - Many people experience feeling paralysed while they are partially awake but dreaming. This may be due to the fact that voluntary movements are inhibited during periods of the dream process. All brain signals to the voluntary muscles are stopped. Therefore if we become slightly awake and attempt to move at that time we feel paralysed. This is not sensed as a problem if we are unconsciously involved in a dream. While dreaming another level of will takes control of the body, the Life Will, so any sounds or movements made are not from ones conscious will.
The problem you experienced is because the Life Will makes movement that are attempts to lead you to self understanding and healing. But virtually everyone blocks these movements because a long time ago our ancestors lived in trees, and the movement would lead to death. So the important fact about dreaming is that all the signals for movement while we dream are sent by the sleeping brain to the muscles but are blocked by a part of the brain called the pons.
