How Can I Meet God/Life Face to Face?

Well there is one firm statement how to meet God in the bible, it is, “Be still and know that I am God.”

It is so simple and yet because we are human we are so restless and continue singing hymns about God avoiding any real meeting. We insist on swinging incense burners and lighting enormous amount of candles; we act out rituals and pentecostal movements and sounds and yet the instruction is to be still; it is not to feel we are sinners and whip and torture ourselves.

There is also another bible statement that helps us understand why being still can unveil God to  us, for in the words of Jesus, “He answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation:  Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, he kingdom of God is within you.”

So you do not have to observe rules and regulations or what other people believe for you have it all the time within you. So there is no need to climb a great mountain or travel far seeking for you have it now – if only you would still the constant activity of o=your mind, emotions and your thousand wishes.

How can you do that, well many people have managed it through the words of T. S Elliot:

I said to my soul, be still and wait without hope

For hope would be hope for the wrong thing; wait without love

For love would be love of the wrong thing; there is yet faith

But the faith and the love and the hope are all in the waiting.

Wait without thought, for you are not ready for thought: So, the darkness shall be the light, and the stillness the dancing.

Some years ago I tried to do as Eliot suggested, for weeks I gave my daily yoga postures, the hours of meditation and sat without any expectations so I waited for the unknown. I felt that it was like waiting for stranger to come and touch me on the shoulder as I stood outside the cinema at the top of  Tottenham Court Road in London, then I would know them.

I waited like that for many weeks and the one night I had got out of bed to visit the toilet, and was just getting back into bed when I heard a loud voice saying, “You asked how God touches the human soul, now watch closely.”

I had never before had such an experience and so I felt something important had occurred. I didn’t have to wait long because I was not touched – I was shaken!!!
