Abroad

Your feelings about that country, or the view or associated feelings you have of it; being in or moving toward a new or changed life situation. For instance just being married might be a very different and new way of living, so be shown in a dream as a foreign country. Occasionally such dreams reveal things we absorbed or learned in connection with that country and its culture.

Being abroad, or mention of a country other than your home, in general is a way of depicting particular feelings or a situation you are in. For instance, if Italy is abroad for you, you might feel it is a warm and romantic place. It would therefore represent a situation in which you are feeling romance and warmth. But a country at war would represent conflict.

If you have not previously been to that country it could suggest exploring new interests, relationship or personal attitudes.

Are you travelling abroad in the dream to get away from a present difficulty or feelings?

So in most cases, abroad suggests a change, or a different feeling or life situation than you are presently in. The dream may be referring to the exploration of new interests, or new areas of yourself – or even of being in a situation you are not at home in.

If you have been to that country, the dream most likely refers to the events or emotions that occurred while you were there.

If the country is a place your family originated from, it may depict the unconscious influences and cultural attitudes you inherited from your family.

If you have lived and worked in that country: You need to define whether you were happy or stressed there and what you absorbed of the atmosphere while there, because the dream would be referring to this.

If abroad or going abroad: Making a change in your life, doing something new; wanting to escape your present environment; getting away from it all; moving into a new attitude.

If someone or something arrives from abroad: A change; something new arising in your life.

Someone of the opposite sex from abroad: Hopes for a new relationship; a relationship that has new features; difficulties with intimacy in present relationship.

See: travel – or specific country.

Useful questions are:

If you have lived in the dream country:

What was your overall experience of that place?

Were you happy there, lonely, what characteristics of the people did you take in?

What is your general view of the country and its people?

Am I or should I be exploring new interests, or new areas of myself?

Is there a situation in my life where I don’t ‘feel at home’?

Hi Tony,

I have always had this nice dream of me travelling in a plane to overseas “continent i have never been” but then always in the middle of the journey the dream ends or i suddenly realize its a dream, i wake up unwillingly without getting the chance to reach destination. kindly assist what does this mean?

    -Anna - Tony's Assistant 2016-05-27 11:10:03

Dear Mos – As you could have read in this entry, moving abroad can be a symbol for making a change in your (inner) life, doing something new; wanting to escape your present environment; getting away from it all; moving into a new attitude.
I see becoming aware that you are dreaming as a wonderful step into “something new”; http://dreamhawk.com/inner-life/lucid-dreaming/
It can provide you with means to reach a destination that you may not have imagined before.

Hi Tony, I had a dream last night that was very confusing and scary. I was somewhere abroad ( I don’t know where I just “knew” I was somewhere away from my homeland. Everyone had boarded the plane but I was too late and was panicking as the next flight wasn’t until the following day and was scared to fly on my own. People were very kind in the dream but I felt very lost. The flight was scheduled for 2.30 pm the next day. At this point I woke up with a start. Recently in real life I lost my beloved dog aged 12 and have had a long separation from my partner. I’m wondering if the 2 could be related ?

Had a dream where I was in another country like South America, I was travelling to a city in the country by the sea, and I was with a random Spanish woman , and we were travelling then we went over a bridge and we were on a cliff side that’s where the road was and on the sea side after the bridge was a little cliff island as big as a bedroom and as tall as the road and was 5-10 metres from the road and on it was a few men with guns holding us up, they were saying get out so I did but the woman stayed in the car and then something appeared behind them so they turned around I jumped onto the cliff and they started firing at something that was behind them I jumped off the cliff into the water and swam away and woman was left there but looked like she was driving off , soon after the dream ended but I found out somehow that she ended up getting shot and died, after that dream I had different dreams but still could remember her and was sad in every other dream I had, sounds confusing but yeah

good day, i would like to know the meaning of my dream, its about the two babies but the babies are dead, they were floating of the seaside. the one baby were look likes a month old but according to the girl in my dream that t was hers and she aborted it, the baby has its eyes open and color black and its winking on me, the other baby has a dark skin and it was also floating.. i really want to know the meaning of my dreams, thank you and god bless

    -Anna - Tony's Assistant 2016-02-15 11:33:40

Dear Jenny – Your dream does not show that the black baby is dead “the baby has its eyes open and color black and its winking on me”.
The “girl in your dream” is a part of you that did not like whatever was developing inside you and so she decided to “abort it”; to stop the progress.
The baby does not seem to be hurt by that decision in any way though and it is still trying to connect with you in a more intimate way by winking at you.
So why not explore “the girl in your dream” and your babies so that you can choose more consciously what you want to do with this developing part of you?

Hello. (Sorry if my grammar is wrong.) Im filipina (from Philippines) and i lived in France with my french husband and my filipina daughter. I lived here for almost 6 months now. Im having a emotional problems that i can’t handle. Yes, i miss philippines so much, especially the people i love, the culture, weather and food. There is no night that im not dreaming that im in philippines since i arrived here. It’s like my soul is in my country but my body is here. But i want to live here and find work; and its perfect country for my daughter’s future. But why my dream makes me feel incomplete or depressed (i dont know).. Every i sleep, its like i dont want to wake up because it feels good to me to feel again to be in my country. Sometimes i just wake up if im tired of sleeping. Thank you so much for reading, i hope you can help to find solution for me to stop dreaming about myself being in my home country.

    -Anna - Tony's Assistant 2016-01-29 12:20:03

Dear Joy – One of the functions of dreams is that they are a means of expressing the otherwise unexpressed aspects of yourself. And so I see your dreams as a move toward wholeness; your dreams keep you balanced as long as “your soul is still in the Philippines”.
I think it might help to look at what it is that defines you.
Do you only identify with “being a Philippine” at this moment in your life?
Have you ever asked yourself the question “who or what am I beyond being a Philippine”?
    See also http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/identification-and-identity/
This approach can help you to express your feelings while you are awake, so that you do not have to dream every night about yourself being in your home country; http://dreamhawk.com/approaches-to-being/the-lifestream/#Open
Another approach could be to learn from other Philippines; how they cope and have coped with creating a new life in Europe.

I hope this helps Joy and I wish you all the best of luck with moving beyond feeling homesick.

Sir, yesterday I dreamed of visiting London. I tasted many recipies, but I had very less amount of money with me, than after 4/5 hours, I came back again to India. What does it mean actually mean?

    -Anna - Tony's Assistant 2016-01-22 13:36:20

Dear Kasmita Das – What I see in your dream – and please explore it yourself as well http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/dream-yoga/ and http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/acting-on-your-dream/#BeingPerson – is that you are exploring different kind of “new foods”, new experiences. Where you alone when trying many recipes or was there someone you were sharing the food with?
What do you think/feel you were “taking into you”?
There is food for the mind; food for thought; food for the body; and spiritual nourishment. We can digest information or experience, the latter being food for your growth as an individual; http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/individuation/ Food can represent any of these. Something we might take or are taking into ourselves – such as experience of a relationship – qualities of another person – sexual pleasure – social pleasure etc.
Not having enough money could refer to your belief/perception that you are inadequate or fail the capacity for growth and development. Perhaps you feel like questioning your belief? http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/beliefs/.
It might also refer to your understanding that you have to digest whatever you took in first.
When we digest, whether it is an idea, something we have read or learned, it has to be first surrendered to the life process. We can see this in our body – it is first chewed and swallowed, then broken down into parts and the useful stuff, the building stuff, can be taken into us and the rest is passed out. The important thing is that even if it is dead or living food, it is transformed into our own living being – in other words our living understanding. If it has not been transformed through digestion it is like something dead inside us. But to be capable of such digestion we must swallow the experience and allow our unknown self to do its work, as described in http://dreamhawk.com/approaches-to-being/lifes-little-secrets/

Hello Tony,

Hope you’re doing great 🙂
I’m May from the Philippines… I just had this weird dream of going to London, a sudden trip w/ my mom. She’s had my visa & tickets ready. (We’re not that rich so I wonder where this dream’s coming from… I’m the bread-winner of the family) I didn’t feel bad at all, all throughout my dream. In fact, I felt somewhat hyped and thrilled. However, I later on realized that we’re not really in London but in New York. Still, I didn’t feel bad… Just a felt bit weird and puzzled why we’re in New York. I recall going to a church and there was a huge crowd… Then I remembered getting a little more excited and wanting to drag my mom to NY Times Square (or a big park I’ve seen somewhere) however I think that’s where my dream ended… Some parts of my dream, I cannot actually recall.

Can you somehow tell me what you can say about my dream please? Thanks, Tony!

Hi!

I have been wanting to go abroad to study (Europe area) and I dream that my aunt paid for me to go overseas study at Australia instead.

What does this mean?? It was so weird because it was kind of unexpected and also definitely not the country I wished I had gone to.

-archita rastogi 2015-04-25 7:21:44

Sir, today I was morning dream being to new York. the place I never visiT this place before.I was with my family .I was calling to my ex boyfriend who is currently studying there. But he was not picking my fon in the dream . As I m not in contact with that guy presently so do tell what my dream says.

    -Anna 2015-04-26 6:59:05

Archita – Dreams are a magical mirror in which your innermost hopes, longings, fears/terrors and genius are made real. They are made real as external environments, people, animals and relationships. So the person you dreamt about is not them, but is a dream image made out of your feelings and memories.
In most cases, abroad suggests a change or a different feeling or life situation than you are presently in. The dream may be referring to being in a situation you are not at home in.
Are you travelling abroad in the dream to get away from a present difficulty or feelings?
Trying to connect with your ex-boyfriend and him not answering the phone, also suggests that you are feeling isolated and alone.
Do know though, that you can work on integrating the influence left in you from the relationship with him.
So I would suggest you integrate all the good and bad things. Try doing this by taking the dream images of your ex and pulling them back into your body. Yes, literally making them one with you. Do this slowly and allow any feelings that arise. This may sound strange but all the images in our dreams are projections from you inner world onto the screen of our sleeping mind; so taking them back into you is like owning them and integrating them. It is called honouring what we learned, bad or good, from the relationship. Think of it like digesting something. In a relationship, whether a feeling relationship or one in which you are learning something, you often absorb things from the person. You might take in such things unconsciously, as you did many things from parents and from the culture you were raised in.
You will feel more whole and you will be able to connect with your inner male once you have done this.

I just woke from a dream where I was in Italy and I was on a scooter flying through crowds of people holding a mug of coffee. I saw my boyfriend but after a split second could not find him. The police were after me but only for the mug. The next thing I know is someone is pulling me and my friend (she just appeared in my dream) into a back alley but its like a little cafe/bar. Some guy is serenading my friend with a guitar while I’m stuffing my face with chocolate cake to the point where I can’t swallow or talk. My eyes are so so so heavy that I think I am drunk in the dream. The cafe told us to go try some dips that would change our lives so we headed there but we couldn’t go back through the other door so they sent us to the roof. We went to go down from the roof but the staircase was all twisted and broken, we saw a woman going down a spiral staircase so we went to follow only it changed into a straight up and down ladder in a tight space. My friend got down no worries but I was too big and got stuck. This is when I woke up. Utterly confused! Can someone help break this down?

In my dream I was on a plane travelling to another continent, 1stly I’ve never been on a plane or overseas but it felt ok in my dream I was In a foreign country and loved it there..the people welcomed me and helped me accomplish whatever I went there to do. I then took a plane back to S.A and had a lot of different kinds of food! #MeaningPlease 🙁

    -Amile 2015-02-27 14:42:35

    Dear Amile 🙂

There are enough reasons to smile at a dream like this.
The dream shows you taking off in a direction in life which is new to you.
It will be helpful for you to realise that every image and person in your dream is a projection of your own life process
    Please read
    http://dreamhawk.com/dream-dictionary/what-we-need-to-remember-about-us-3/#Project
In the dream you feel you have enough confidence and enough still unknown inner recourses – symbolized by the people who welcome you and who help you accomplish whatever you go there to do.
I think the food as a symbol in this dream relates to all that you are able to “take into you”
as a result of your open and welcoming attitude towards the unknown (experiences) in your life.
    http://dreamhawk.com/dream-dictionary/food/
You have a lot inside you to be grateful for.

    Anna 🙂

Hi Tony, I had a dream last night that I was in a school in a foreign country. I’ve lived and worked in that country before and I’ll be going there in a few weeks.

In my dream, I was in a school (I think it was college) and there was a class. It was such a pleasant environment. I didn’t know anyone in the class but my eyes have met with a pretty girl’s eyes 🙂 I often have these kind of dreams where I met a pretty girl -usually foreign- and flirt, have a good time, sometimes even kiss 🙂 I had at least 10 different dreams like this.

I’m not in a relationship and I’ll most likely to go to a school in that country and meet lots of people. Do these dreams mean my time in that country will be smooth social wise?

Hi! in my dream sir i’m at San Francisco California i know the place because of the Big long Red Bridge. last night i have a dream that i’m on san francisco USA with a stranger (i dont know him or her because i can’t see the face of that person)but im sure we didnt go to san francisco for a vacation .we go to that place because he explain to me about my new job or work to that place. and i have no idea. what is the meaning about my dreams. thank you!

        -Anna - Tony's Assistant 2015-09-24 11:04:02

Dear Max – The way I see your dream is that it shows a need and/or a willingness to explore some unknown areas of yourself. Therefore the work in your dream is a symbol of the inner work that you are asked to do.
The bridge is a way of allowing passage, and it can show a constriction or a release of what was previously held back, blocked by a barrier. In personal terms this means that fears or other feelings can block the free flow of your creativity, love or growth.
LIFE is always pushing you to express more of your potential like IT pushes a seed to grow into a mighty tree. http://dreamhawk.com/dream-dictionary/what-we-need-to-remember-about-us-3/#Seed
To be able to express more of your potential, LIFE asks you to have a look at your shadow.
No face is what is called a shadow figure if you see it on another person; it reflects parts of your nature or behaviour that you usually keep hidden or do not admit to.
In many dreams the shadowy person expresses not only your hidden fears and pains, but also the parts of your personality that through shyness or circumstances may not be expressed.
As far as the other side of the shadow is concerned; If you can think of the characteristics you loathe in others, that is a fair picture of what you repress in yourself. The great ‘ladies-man’ may hide a shadow which feels inadequate sexually. The loving Christian mother might meet a shadow full of resentment and anger at how she has been taken for granted. The rigid heterosexual might hide homosexual tendencies. Meeting the shadow through our dreams is a meeting with our own reality, which in turn enables us to look at the world realistically. If the shadow can be met it leads to wholeness.
It will be helpful to (continue to) explore your dreams, because they will be a great help in becoming aware of your shadow.
