Demon

Expression of things in life and yourself that you feel threatened by. You may feel an urge is sinful, so you repress it. Your dream then presents it as a demon or devil, not necessarily because it is, but because that’s how you see it. Thus, a person who has terrible feelings of guilt about sexual urges, may represent them as a demon threatening to possess them. Therefore a demon may represent guilt, hatred, feelings of uncleanness, aggressiveness or desire for love, and so on. See: Devil; Satan.

Although many dreams about demons are probably reflecting anxiety feelings and struggles we have with moral issues or sex, sometimes the battle with demons can be about our body fighting a virus or bacterial infection. See: devilunder archetypes.

Example: We were trying to cross the hall diagonally toward the exit, but were constantly attacked or haunted by black demons or ghosts. I was fighting them off, but the struggle went on and on as they came back. Then toward the end I had a large pole and I was smashing them aside shouting, “By the power of God within me, I dismiss you” – or words to that effect.

The dreamer says of this dream, “I felt a slightly sore throat as I became semi awake wondering about the dream. I remembered that yesterday I had a flu injection, and what I arrived at was that the blackness depicted serious illness that I had been fighting off. As I was looking at this the black demons became very real for me and I felt I could not really dismiss them as an influence. I struggled and struggled with this, as I had in the dream, but now semi awake. But gradually I became aware of peace, a solid unmovable peace – a steadiness of consciousness – and the steady peace seemed to dissolve any threat I felt. Also the sore throat went.”

This suggests how we can deeply influence our health and recovery by our attitudes.

Example: I had a weird dream last night. I dreamt that someone I know (an old family friend of my parents) had purchased a new house, which was not yet furnished. But the house is apparently possessed by the Devil. We, some friends and I, have been called into the house to analyze the situation. Each time I speak the word Devil or Satan, the lights of the house switch off automatically on their own.

Well, I decide in consultation with the people and in my thoughts in the dream to perform an exorcism on the house. I chant some prayers for the house to be cleansed. (These are Hindu prayers, and parts of Psalm 99 from the Bible). I find myself standing with some friends in front of a life-size rectangular mirror which has been kept against the wall, facing us upright on the floor. When I stand in front of the mirror, I cast no reflection on it. But my friends do.
Throughout the dream, I was not afraid even one bit of trying to challenge the devil or in my entire thought process.

Here is an interpretation of the dream’s meaning: I think here is the answer: “When I stand in front of the mirror, I cast no reflection on it. But my friends do. So I hear myself say that “The devil is doing this to the mirror cos I am fighting to get rid of him.””

In the best of Hindu and Christian traditions, you are the Devil because at your Core you are everything. In Hindu there is the saying, “You are That” – or “I am That.” THAT being the Divine. In Christian belief we are told, to quote: “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them”.

As an image of God you are everything. And that is why your dream did the little trick of showing you without reflection in the mirror. Once you realise that dreams create an external reality of our inner world, then an aspect of you become exteriorised. As in past ages this was a world that people lived in, they made the devil and God as exterior to themselves instead of realising the truth about themselves. That we are all, in our core, the divine.

Having watched a person meet the devil in their dream exploration, what they arrived at is very helpful in understanding your dream devil. She saw that her lack of self esteem, her self doubts and depression were like an open door that allowed destructive feelings and fears to enter. These attitudes or feelings may have been inherited from ones recent or ancestral family. She saw these as portrayed as the Devil.

The words demons or evil spirits in the past really meant, ‘invisible but powerful influences that can make you ill in mind or body’. They are what today would be called viruses, bacteria, or trauma we that we are unconscious of.

So had a nap and woke up from this realy deserving dream. I was in a ship on vacation and this person kept coming for me chasing me around and when I face this person they had the body of a man the snout of a fox and the wings of a bat. It kept talking to me about me being it’s choice and it’s girlfriend. I then grabbed it by the snout and tryed to through it over the side of the boat and it laughed at me. My cat then woke me up and I was screaming and angry and scared. It started a please not dream.

i have dreams of demon. he’s a white with purple veins that is so revealing, standing in the branch of a tree. he watched my every move as i was chasing someone. i ask the demon, what he is doing there, he just laugh wholly, and i asked again what he wants, he laughed again and muttered something i couldn’t clearly hear and then i woke up. hearing the dogs barked outside our house.

Dear Lisa – Flying without an airplane in your dream can mean you are flying or fleeing, from something you find difficult to face. This is usually something in your life you try to get away from by using distractions like social life, media entertainments, becoming over idealistic, religious, or living in the clouds of fantasy.
In the context of your dream I see being able to move things with your mind as a symbol for a mind that is spinning out of control because of fear.
To understand this and the “frozen afraid” reaction in your waking life I like you to read
    http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/flight-or-fight/
While your mother, sister and cousin are praying (for inner healing) in your dream, you become aware of some internal and/or external difficulty that causes so much fear that you feel you cannot deal with it yet.
Your inner mother tells you to calm yourself and that sounds like a good advice; http://dreamhawk.com/dream-dictionary/fear-dealing-with/
You may need a stronger foundation/ego to be able to deal with your (inner) demons or evil spirits; the ‘invisible but powerful influences that can make you ill in mind or body’.
Perhaps you will decide to look for psychological help in learning to manage your inner world of thoughts and feelings.
How do you perceive the relationship with your boyfriend in your waking life?

I dreamt that my house had demons so I began cleansing my house with holy water. In my dream I was required to cleanse first from east to west then from north to south. I remember I also used my compass app in my dream to be sure I cleansed in the precise way.

-Lala 2016-06-08 3:27:22

I dreamt of demons and snakes.
So it started with a theater play in school grounds. It was dark and kind of like a horror play; it was short tho. At the end we all dances and one person approached me to go somewhere. I remember going to a place where a snake is giving birth to snakes(it was not laying eggs but to baby snakes already) and we were looking for a necklace yet found none. Then i was on a our living room then a familiar demon approached me, i was so scared so i decided to kill it. I killed it but it started moving so i stab it on mouth, eyes and head. I thought it was dead and proceeded but when i look back ot started moving and it was evolving. I rushed to my friend to tell her what happened she was so calm and went to kill the demon(she brought a samurai with her) but i am so scared that i wont be able to kill it myself and that it will continue to go after me until i am not dead yet. So i decided to do transportation.. and it worked i am now in a place where people cook delicious foods and the writings in the place are like chinese or korean or japanese. Then i finally wake up.

I am scared because last time i woke up at 3am. i could feel someone is trying to wake me up and surprised to see that it is 3am.

I hope someone could interpret this to me..

-Arun 2016-06-07 22:12:44

I have had 2 separate dreams to do with this type of thing..about Demon Dreams.
This first one I had was about me in a place seeming familiar and reminded me of my old school but I was feeling something and knew not to go outside when everyone did..There were 2 people who I had never seen but seemed like my only friends then as we were going down the stairs to go outside I remember the sky going dark then I said to them “Wait. Don’t leave me alone”. Next thing I knew I was outside the school on a field with demons everywhere and the leader in place at the center of them all with Horns and he was kind of brown yet red along with black hair and a red center full of power. I was then in the middle between the 2 friends One of them was a boy and the other was a girl. The Demon came up to me and said ” I have waited for you”. He then lunged at me and sent the demons after me. I thought I would have died yet I felt an urge of power then tribal-like tattoos appeared on my arms leading up to my face when my eyes turned blue and Lightening flashed around me but the demons were intact and I was a Demon. I then breathed as though I had awoken and the leader of the demons with the horns said “You have awoken” and bowed. I then opened a portal in the sky which was charging creating swarms of clouds and the demon before me said ” Now you know what you must do”. I looked at my friends and trapped them with lightening which turned into steel. The portal in the sky was then completed and a flash of lightening came down which showed a sword in front of me with a shell-like hilt. I picked it up and it lit up with lightening and I walked to my friend the man and remembered all of the times I had with him then said I am sorry and sliced to kill him When I had appeared to the start of my dream which Was actually me walking but I don’t remember anything that had happened as if time has reset itself to redo everything to happen again as it just had with the demons but I was with someone who was a friend/accomplice who I had seen at the beginning of the dream, Right at the start.
I am sorry this is long But I would like to know what this means.

    -Arun 2016-06-07 22:13:33

I will say the other dream once I get a response here. ^^

    -Anna - Tony's Assistant 2016-06-12 8:11:53

Dear Arun – A very powerful dream!!
What I see reflected is an initiation; http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/initiation/
Becoming the demon yourself in your dream – http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/acting-on-your-dream/#BeingPerson – is like owning your power, your natural urges and feelings, rather than repressing them.
“Knowing what you have to do” and then killing the man with a sword could symbolise how you let go of your old self; of your old ways of dealing with your inner and outer life.
“You have awoken” may reflect that a waking awareness has arisen while dreaming. This is called lucid dreaming. During it you can change or wilfully direct what is happening in the dream in a way not usual to the dream state. That is why the demon before you says;” Now you know what you must do”.
    See http://dreamhawk.com/inner-life/lucid-dreaming/
The last part of your dream, where you perceive “as if time has reset itself to redo everything to happen again” may reflect your awareness that in waking life you still have to go through this process of initiation, which may take a lot of linear time or the ‘one-thing-after-another’ time.
The aboriginals call the Dreamtime the ‘all-at-once’ time.
This is because they experience Dreamtime as the past present and future coexisting. This condition – See: http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/altered-states-of-consciousness/
    – is met when the tribal member lives according to tribal rules, and then is initiated through rituals and hearing the myths of the tribe; http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/australian-aborigine-dream-beliefs/

-Cameron 2016-06-04 6:09:55

I’m commenting now since it’s still fresh in my head but I had this horrific dream that my grandmother was possessed by a demon. It started with her seeming to have fallen off her bed and then she was acting very odd trying to grab and pin me down which ended with me yelling at her that she is not the devil, I am. After me her and my brother were sitting down watching TV and for some reason a lot of our old stuff was sprawled everywhere. He went to leave and things became terrifying. She was walking on all fours while dozens of dolls were singing. I can’t seem to remember what was sung but her face was oozing something black.

It was just terrifying and I was hoping to have an opinion on what this could mean.
Thanks, Cameron

    -Anna - Tony's Assistant 2016-06-09 11:40:30

Dear Cameron – Please also read http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/possession-and-dreams/
In your dream you become aware that there is no difference as far as your inner world is concerned between your own dream figure and your grandmother; “she is not the devil, I am.”
You realise that what you hold within you unconsciously is projected onto the screen of your mind while you dream.
    See also Inner Grandmother; http://dreamhawk.com/dream-dictionary/grandmother-grandma/
“A lot of your old stuff” may reflect too that there is a need for cleaning up your inner world; to release unconscious thoughts and feelings – “her face was oozing something black” – that have been pushed down, refused to look at or to acknowledge; http://dreamhawk.com/approaches-to-being/opening-to-life/
This idea can be terrifying at first because the human shadow is everything that does not exist within your accepted self-image.
The shadow develops in us, according to Jolande Jacobi, because as we grow and absorb our culture, we naturally repress parts of our nature as they are not acceptable to ourselves, our family and/or society. These grow and mature in just the way our conscious personality does, through experience and further information – except the shadow has a life under the surface – in the darkness – like any socially unacceptable organisation, criminal activity or individual.
Each time you move a potential trait from the darkness (unconscious denial) to the light (conscious acceptance) it removes the need for the ego to project this trait onto anyone else and this is the process of healing the shadow. This allows you to experience more peace inside and out; http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/the-archetype-of-the-shadow/

In my dream, i was lying in bed when a little girl walked up to me holding the first book in my favorite series called City of Bones. She said its weird to see a girl in your room isn’t it? I kicked her away standing up, holding my hand to turn my light on, but i was paralyzed I was so scared. She grabbed my had, and looked up at me, “Its weird to see someone just like you in your room isn’t it?” then she bit my hand. I was so scared and could scream all i could do was stand then. I never woke up just went into another dream.

    -Anna - Tony's Assistant 2016-06-09 13:16:39

Dear L.H. – What I see in your dream is that you meet your inner child – http://dreamhawk.com/dream-dictionary/child/ – and the hurts and fears that may have been part of your childhood.
Dreaming that you are paralysed may depict the paralysing effects either of fears you have, or what you have imagined as real.
Do you feel that reading books like “The City of Bones” have a negative effect on you; do they make you afraid of your Inner World and the unexpected that may arise from It?
Why have you put this dream in the entry about “Demons”; there is no mention of any demon in your dream?
Do you believe that your inner child and the needs she may have is something “evil”?
Do you dare to express your fear, your aggression and anger; http://dreamhawk.com/approaches-to-being/opening-to-life/
    See also http://dreamhawk.com/dream-dictionary/evil/
Do continue to explore what you are afraid of in your dream, because when you manage to become aware – turn on the light – the fear will dissolve as well.

    -Anna - Tony's Assistant 2016-06-03 11:14:16

Dear Lee Gregory – What you see reflected in your phone screen is a part of you that you do not allow any expression anymore; perhaps because with your husband being ill you feel that you have to take on the role of an angel?
Not allowing all of your feelings is also seen in the part where the woman/sister kills people.
Your (inner) husband has not found a way either yet to allow and express his emotions that may be related to his illness.
Do you feel you can talk openly with yourself and each other about his health and coming surgery?

Okay, so my dream was I was laying in my bed with my daughter then my closet door flew open and there was a loud screeching sound and there was a really tall dark black guy standing there and he had bright orange eyes. He walked over to me and picked me up and told me that it was going to be okay and that he’d never hurt me. His name was like Deshida or something. The weird thing is he didn’t make me feel uncomfortable what so ever. He had beautiful black wings. He told me that it was okay that he died so he could protect me. The only reason I got freaked out is because my husband recently died in a car accident. Could this be him?

-Jenny 2016-05-19 8:46:32

In my dream, there was me, my mum and a friend in a house; on the wall in the bathroom there was a safe like thing. I pressed the open button on it with my mum in the bathroom and got a bad feeling. I don’t know why but I got into the bath tub and started talking strongly to this demon saying ‘I am God’, suddenly in my dream I’m held under water by this demon and my mum lets the water out the bath tub and I say ‘bye demon’ and close the safe like thing. I’m then in the same room as my friend and he wants to know what happened so I show him the safe and open it again, this time without going in the bath tub. My friend tells the demon ‘I am God’ and then the bath tub is full with water, I say ‘bye demon and shit the safe like thing again; as we walk into his room the wardrobe is open so we close it and my mum decides to do an exorcism on the house and me. The priest then shows up and I open the safe and get tied up, the priest then says a lot of prayers, tells the demon to leave me and my family and friends alone then banishes the demon, it feels like I’m floating next as I can see different priests in 2 different rooms of the house cleansing it then I woke up.
I’ve had depression and anxiety lately and I’ve been making myself stay strong for other people instead of focusing on my health. I have no idea what my dream means but when I woke up I was a little shaky thinking that I’d done something wrong, I never remember a dream like I have with this one and it scared me when I first woke up

    -Anna - Tony's Assistant 2016-05-24 8:07:09

Dear Jenny – The first part of your dream may reflect how you deal with difficult and bad feelings; they are locked away in a safe.
When you open the safe and become aware of what your dream figure perceives as bad feelings (perception is not a fact!), you decide to cleanse these feelings and so you step into the bath tub.
What do you become aware of when you say “I am God”?
    Please use http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/acting-on-your-dream/#BeingPerson
“I am God,” does not reflect an individual person.
Do you feel that your inner explorations have revealed the true nature of the Self?
The essence of self, the sense of “I am” without any personal attributes, is God.
Thomas Merton put it very clearly:
“If I penetrate to the depths of my own existence and my own present reality, the indefinable am that is myself in its deepest roots, then through this deep centre I pass into the infinite I am which is the very Name of the Almighty.”
    Please also read http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/the-archetype-of-the-self/
Negative relations with this archetype might be that we use it as a defence against meeting our pain and childhood trauma as we enter this vast storehouse of our being. As a way of escaping the self-responsibility for our difficult human condition we might fly off into feelings of loving all things, of knowing the mystery of it all, of being the Buddha. The problem is that while it might be true we are in essence the Christ, or have wisdom, these realisations are distorted by the undealt with childhood traumas and longings.
    See also http://dreamhawk.com/dream-dictionary/exorcise-exorcism/
There is an approach that can help you open the safe while you are awake and express what is locked in there; http://dreamhawk.com/approaches-to-being/opening-to-life/
You might want to give it a try as I see it as not having to stay strong for other people or yourself and as focusing on your health.
    Anna 🙂

for one week now I’v been having demons in my dreams. there for i lost a lot of sleep. but not only that but I’v been seeing them not only I’v my dreams but out side in real life. I see them on the street and in my home. but i don’t know what i have done to make this thing come to life. and I’m only 14 years old. What would that mean for me?

-Kelley Utt 2016-04-23 22:23:47

In my dream, a demon wrapped it’s wings around me, like a shrink wrap. Although it wasn’t an audible voice, I could clearly understand what it was saying to me, telling me to denounce my God and it spoke very sexually to me in a vulgar way. I felt like I was smothering and kept calling out, “Yahweh, Yahweh!” I have been having demonic nightmares since childhood and this demon was not a stranger, it’s the same one but comes in different forms. I have had battles with this deity, even once I was fighting it when I couldn’t see it, I had a sword and tried so hard but could feel myself becoming exhausted and giving up. Other times, I have had what I have looked up on the internet that refers to sleep paralysis, the demon is always present, I am unable to move, scream or do anything, it has touched me whispered things and I’ve felt like my soul was being pulled from my body and I have even looked at myself sleeping in my bed while being dragged away by something unseen. In the past, I have gone to a doctor for sleep medicine and have even gone as far as to take Antipsychotic medications such as Seroquel so that I would sleep so hard that I would not have this happen. I have not taken anything about 2 years because of the effects of the medicine and even sometimes on the medication, I would still have the dreams, just not the sleep paralysis. I am a Christian woman, I am 43 years old, drug & alcohol & tobacco free, I am married and attend church. I have always been told that to try to interpret dreams was a bad thing and against what the word of God teaches but I wonder and really would like to know if there is really meaning behind dreams, are they real, are they warnings, is it my conscious? What? Thank you for your time.

    -Anna - Tony's Assistant 2016-04-27 12:48:37

Dear Kelley Utt – You believe that to try to interpret dreams was a bad thing and against what the word of God teaches.
Many of our beliefs are unconscious; they were absorbed in childhood and often remain without any conscious evaluation.
I have experienced that every belief that was related to the way I was raised and the religion that was part of my upbringing was difficult to question, because of the fear of my inner child that even questioning what has been told me “in the name of God” was a sin AND would be punished.
Once I dared to start this inner journey towards finding my own truth inside me, I learned to approach my inner life again with the curiosity of a child that is not imprisoned by fear anymore.
So from my perspective daring to question if there is really meaning behind dreams is a wonderful step.
To answer your question; yes, there is really meaning behind dreams and they are as real as your inner life – your inner world – is real; http://dreamhawk.com/inner-life/inner-world/#MakesInner
Some dreams are warnings and there are many examples of warning dreams on the website,
    like http://dreamhawk.com/health-and-healing/i-believe-a-dream-saved-me-with-breast-cancer/
If you read the article on the function of dreaming then you can see that dreams do not have just one function; http://dreamhawk.com/dream-dictionary/function-of-dreaming/
I will not explore your dream, because you did not ask me to do that (yet?); I would like to invite you to read http://dreamhawk.com/dream-dictionary/evil/.

    -Tony Crisp 2016-04-28 7:21:30

Dear Kelley – Unfortunately your beliefs about dreams are founded on a bad translation centuries ago.

Jerome was born at Stridon, a village near Emona, then part of north-eastern Italy, in the fourth century. He is best known for his translation of most of the Bible into Latin. His writing, probably influenced by the church, had a cataclysmic effect upon how dreams were viewed by western Christians for the next fifteen centuries. Jerome apparently deliberately mistranslated the Hebrew word for witchcraft, anan, which was considered a pagan superstitious practice, as (observo somnia), “observing dreams.” The word anan appeared ten times in the Old Testament; seven times Jerome correctly interpreted it, as witchcraft or a closely related practice, such as divining; but in the other three cases, where the Hebrew text is specifically condemning witchcraft (anan), he redirected the condemnation against dreams. Thus, the prohibition “you shall not practice augury or witchcraft” became “you shall not practice augury nor observe dreams.”

And He said, “Hear now my words: If there be a prophet among you, I the LORD will make myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream” (Num. 12:6).

“I will pour out of My Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams” (Acts 2:17).

“For God speaketh once, yea twice, yet man perceiveth it not. In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed; Then He openeth the ears of men, and sealeth their instruction, That He may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man. He keepeth back his soul from the pit, and his life from perishing by the sword.” (Job 33:14- 18).

I had a dream where there was a demonic girl with long black hair standing in front of me, glaring at me with yellowish red eyes which glowed, her teeth were all sharp and she growled at me. this caused me to wake up, I then told myself it was a dream and went back to sleep but my dream went immediately back to her, this time however she was in a crab position and her head was twisted around so that she faced me straight, this ment her head was twisted upside down 180 degrees, her eyes were still glowing and glaring at me while she continued to growl at me with her sharp teeth. I once again woke up from this dream and told myself again it was a dream, then i went back to sleep and there she was again, except now she started crawling at me but i didn’t feel any type of fear anymore, i started to smile in my dream and became a demon myself where as she turned into a normal girl and ran away from me scared. i had a fight with my brother earlier that day, what does my dream mean?
