Drowning

This is such a common dream and has been answered hundreds of times, we first ask you to look through the many answers given in Drowning – Many Replies Hopefully you will find an answer to your own drowning dream

Because of the water, drowning depicts fear of being overwhelmed by difficult emotions or anxieties, so it often points to struggles – conflicts – or fighting for survival you may have in your life. But this might apply not to dangerous emotions or urges, but to natural urges such as eating, loving or sex, that some people have enormous conflicts with. Drowning in a dream is also about struggling to survive as a person, so it applies to your identity as it is dealing with relationship with other people, but also with your own internal world of instincts, body activities and needs.

But the feelings of being overwhelmed can be caused by fear or anxiety. But if we can, we can meet and dissolve these. For whenever we dream its images are not like real life, because a dream is nothing like outer life where things could hurt you, but is an image like on a cinema screen that even if a gun is pointed at you and fired it can do no damage – except if you run in fear. So all the things that scare you are simply your own fears projected onto the screen of your sleeping mind.

So in dreams you cannot drown, but fear takes away your confidence, so then you go through the agonised emotions of drowning.

This is about being or feeling overwhelmed by something. One can ‘drown’ in sorrow for instance. So you need to look at your waking life to see what you are feeling threatened or burdened by and see if there are ways you can deal with it. If someone else actually drowns in the dream it may mean some of your feelings, your creativity and responsiveness are no longer ‘alive’. But they can be brought back to life if you care for that side of yourself. Sometimes it is simply anxiety we drown in, and much of anxiety is about situations we imagine. Separating what is imagined from what is real can help this. See Characters and People in Dreams

But such fear can be caused because if un-dealt with traumas from childhood are not faced, or by being exposed to awful film images that you believe are real. Read  and Martial Art of the Mind

If you feel you are struggling to you ‘keep your head above water’ in a dream, do not give in for it is only emotions you are facing, not reality.

Water and drowning often indicates you are facing the unknown changes and so are afraid. But in dreams we can never die or even be hurt, for we wake without real hurt except for our feelings.

Going under water in a dream depicts you are going deeper into your awareness, so you are beginning to explore your unconscious. That is a major step in your development and is an evolutionary advance. It can lead to many major new abilities such as a wider awareness of life around you. A person describes one of the possible changes, “Unexpectedly everything changed and my fundamental self was something that existed throughout all time. It didn’t have a beginning or end. There was no goal to achieve. I am.”

Dreamt about someone else: May occasionally show Your apprehension about their health or well being, having the suggestion of death or breakdown.

Example: ‘I fell into a pond. My brother was frightened to be by himself so he jumped in. We were both drowning in the water and we shouted out for Mum. My brother drowned.’ Poppy S.

Poppy dreamt this while feeling insecure and anxious due to her father being seriously ill.

Example: I had been dreaming about sitting on a sofa with my friends – well watching horror movies, when suddenly everything comes to live. I was afraid of the ghost that had been drowning with her husband in the movie, and it comes to haunt me. I asked the ghost’s sister to help and she passes me a necklace with can protect me. And suddenly the ghost appears and tells my friend she was pretty. What does this means?

It means that you need to understand how your mind works. It means that you have nothing to fear about ghosts. As the ghost that appeared showed you, there was no harm in it. Dream images are like images on cinema screens – harmless unless you are haunted by your own fears. But the dream also shows you that whatever you believe in becomes a fact and alive in our dreams. It mean that the necklace gave you confidence, and in fact the necklace is only a crutch for your confidence. But we need such things until we can deal with our own emotions. See Facing Fear

Idioms: drown your sorrow; if you’re born to hang, you won’t drown.

Useful questions:

What powerful emotions or changes am I dealing with?

Am I feeling overwhelmed by something?

Can I define the strengths and ways I use to deal with threatening feelings?

Do I feel as if I am ‘drowning’ in a situation or relationship?

What is it I am feeling overwhelmed by recently?

Is this someone else drowning – if so what facet of me do they represent?

What resource or person could help me survive in this situation?

Another person or animal drowning still suggests it is an aspect of your own personality you need to care for.

Whoever or whatever it is, imagine yourself back in the dream and save them. If necessary imagine rescue services coming to your aid. In doing this you are using imagery to shift your feelings and anxieties.

All water in some way signifies your own inner world of feelings, but the sea often suggests meeting urges and wisdom lying beyond the boundary of your conscious mind. What is it you feel in the sea or river? Try putting it into words.

I dreamt like me, my both best friends, boy who I liked one year ago and two other person(I don’t remember their gender or who exactly they were, but I think, I know them in real life) were walking on the plank which was on the ocean. I was walking ahead of them and reached other part of plank. Suddenly this boy and two other person caught my friends and told me if I don’t come back they will kill them. In this dream I had some magic power or something which helped me to pull water up from the plank. My friends ran to me and others drowned and the plank and everything disappeared. Then I dreamt what happened on the other day and I was very sad by killing them, but then someone told me, that two person who I don’t remember survived and this guy who I liked, died. And it was like he caught my friends for some kind of experiment. He didn’t really want to hurt them. After hearing this, I wished kill myself for doing such a terrible thing. And my best friend was joking with me because of killing him and I wished to hit her but I didn’t her. And it was like nobody cared of his death at all.

Hi – I must take time to upgrade the dream dictionary, so must halt from answering your posts – I started revising the dictionary in 2006, and haven’t neared the end yet. I believe someone else may start giving interpretations.

So, for a while I urge you to read http://dreamhawk.com/approaches-to-being/i-am-no-longer-interpreting-dreams/ – It describes ways that can help you. And often it would help too if you looked at http://dreamhawk.com/approaches-to-being/questions-2/#Summing

    Tony

Of course you have magic powers in your dreams, but you are still seeing them as relating to people. But all the images, people, animals, places we see in our dreams, are simply your own feelings, fears, hopes and wonder projected onto the screen of your sleeping mind as images. So, it makes sense to take the image of your dream person, thing or animal back into you and own it. In that way, you are actually meeting and dealing with the things about yourself you are not owning or conscious of. That is why dreams are often difficult to understand, because we are hiding things from ourselves. To do this you can use http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/acting-on-your-dream/#BeingPerson

Please help if you can-

I’ve had the same dream multiple times recently. I dream that my kind loving boyfriend of 3 years, my precious 5 year old, and myself have been given the news that the world is going to be swallowed up by a flood/also that we need to have food stashed for 3 years. I dream that we get in a boat, and there are other people there, but we have to get to my parents. I’ve got a terribly rocky relationship with my mother- she has mental illnesses. But I still care about her. My parents are still married.

I dream that we are in the boat and the flood starts to come, then I wake up. I feel terribly unsettled and when I wake up I feel afraid. I’ve had this dream 3 or 4 times in the past 3 months. I also started a job that puts a lot of pressure on me. Any suggestions that will help me? Please?

I had a re-acuring dream for the past 6 years and each time I learn something about it it continues like a movie…I was drowning in a puddle of water I could see the top but as much as I tried I could not reach the surface to breath then a figure appears up there and trust to pull me out only for me to unintentionally pull him in to see that it’s only another me but now we’re both stuck swimming upward but never reaching the top then another figure appears and just dives in and yet again it’s another me then we hear a loud shatter and this big mirror falls in and disappears but now there’s 6 of me stuck in this puddle and then I wake up….Please help me am I in any danger?

I have had dreams about oceans and drowning ever since i remember. They are very disturbing. In most of my dreams i m surrounded with lot of water and am about to drown or have drowned.

Today i dreamt i was with my baby and about to drown in a tsunami. We were running inland on a higher cliff and a building but eventually the water got us. I wanted to speak to my husband one last time before death but I couldnt as my phone ws dead. My baby and me died hugging in the water. I woke feeling suffocated and cried. I am scared of these dreams.

I had this dream long ago.But sometimes it still bothers me.In my dream,i went to my bathroom. The light was lit on.The bathroom was white. And there was my red chair without a back. And the top of it, there was my pink bucket there. It was filled with water.Full.I felt sad for some reason. And then i just couldn’t hold it anymore so i decide to kill myself by drowning my face into the bucket of water.I couldn’t breathe.. and i thought maybe i should stop or should i continue? i thought again” Hopeless”.But i told myself not to.If i die, what would my family think? I can’t do this.i tried to wake myself up.Saying “Wake up.. wake up.. wake up” and tried to lift up my head from the water. And then i woke up. And maybe that dream was a luck.I know it was bad.But it saved my life for some reason and at least it gave me a choice.Yeah there was a pillow blocking my nose.Maybe that’s why i couldn’t breathe.Funny do you know what it means?

I had a dream last night that I was at a party/social event with a bunch of people, I wasn’t familiar with all the people and I believe some of them were work friends of my girlfriend. I had feelings of not really liking her coworkers very much, and eventually myself, my best friend (a male), and my girlfriend left the party and went outside into a very dark night with few lights in a city. For whatever reason we felt unsafe outside and decided to all start running back to our respective vehicles. After a little bit of running my best friend cut right through a path leading towards his car and I quickly glanced at him and when I looked back forward into the dark I couldn’t see my girlfriend in front of me anymore. I turned on my flashlight to look for her and eventually pointed at her standing directly in front of me wearing some sort of cloak thing and she purposely tried to scare me. When she did I fell back to the ground and looked up at her and a different friend of mine who suddenly appeared and I stood up abruptly to move past them and tripped and fell back first into a creek and sank to the bottom. Neither of them jumped in to help me and I was no longer able to move. I felt like I was trying but I just sat at the bottom on my back. I ended up waking up making noise and sat straight up in my bed. I woke up before I knew if I survived or died.

I had a dream last night that I was at a pool with my family and friends. I had somehow fallen in the pool and when I fell in I would sink straight to the bottom and it felt like something was holding me down there. I wasn’t able to breathe and no one in my dream tried to save me. I just sat at the bottom of the pool. Before I passed out (in the dream) I woke up and was really out of breath. It was terrifying and I had this same dream 2 or 3 times last night.

Hi – I am sorry I cannot keep up with number of dreams sent at the moment. But I have described a way that you can get to the meaning of your dream. It only takes a little time to work at knowing the meaning of your dream.

So please click on the link and find your dreams meaning – http://dreamhawk.com/dream-dictionary/getting-at-your-dreams-meaning/ or http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/acting-on-your-dream/#BeingPerson

Whenever we dream its images are not like real life, because a dream is nothing like outer life where things could hurt you, but is an image like on a cinema screen, so that even if a gun is pointed at you and fired it can do no damage – except if you run in fear; so all the things that scare you are simply your own fears projected onto the screen of your sleeping mind.

You had started to become aware of a much bigger part of you, a part that holds you wonderful potential. But people become scared as they start to enter it.

Remember that all you receive has to pass through your own body, your emotions and your mind. YOU are the instrument that transforms the communication into understandable experience. If your body is full of tensions and drugs there will obviously be interference. If your emotions are taut with anxiety, flooded with disbelief, there will be blockages. If your mind is rigid in its opinions, locked into habits of thought, you will need to practise listening and receiving. Even if you can be ready to drop these for a few moments the channel can clear. See http://dreamhawk.com/inner-life/extending-your-awareness/

I had a dream that me and my boyfriend we’re at an indoor community rec pool. We were just swimming around when he suddenly began to drown me. I was underwater for long enough to feel myself going unconscious when he suddenly pulled me out of water and began performing cpr. I then regained consciousness in my dream.

Started by me and 2 boys (I don’t know in life but I did in my dream) needing to visit a family member (again I only know her from my dreams). It felt like I’ve been to see her when I was younger but I can only remember bits and pieces. I do remember that there was a rule of don’t talk to the locals and never go off the main path. Me and the boys biked down familiar roads (again only to dream me) towards the hill she lived on. We made a turn and saw a huge lake. I felt captivated and excited. And I went to start up the small hill when a small path caught my eye. It lead down tosome rocks by the water. And despite knowing the rule and that bad things would happen, I started to walk down towards it. The boys having never been here, followed me. All of a sudden we were sliding down towards the lake and couldn’t stop, it was like we were being dragged to it. Once in the water we tried to grip the rocks to get out but kept slipping. I was able to grab some and we made a chain of people as i dragged us back up towards the hill. Once up we ran to her house and entered. We smiled and hugged her. Then after a few minutes my dream flickered and she was laying down facing the wall. It felt like something was taken from her and she wasn’t really there. Above her was a plaque that said something about needing to go back to the path and water and finding a emerald (of all things) in the water. So we went back down and jumped into the water. It felt like seaweed stuff was pulling me down and I couldn’t stay afloat. After a few minutes of struggling a thought crossed my mind to just let go. See what happens. But as I let go and was pulled under I stopped breathing air and started to breathe in water and black out. I then woke up.

I’m at a loss for what it means.

I dreamt i was driving through a track with my mom which suddenly stopped at a dead end. I came out and peered through the bushes i saw a woman tendering her cow when i looked down i saw the track had dirty water and rising. I told my mom we need to get out from here when i looked at her again the dirty water rose over her head she went down and got up again when i reached for her the water rushed in again i grabbed her around the neck and started to swim to safety and woke up…i then prayed as the dream was so vivid.

-Sheri 2016-11-06 16:29:49

I dreamed that I was in a community swimming pool with a lot of people there. We were all in the pool and I was being taught how to swim. All of these people around me were strangers but I felt comfortable. While being taught I slipped under water thinking someone would come save me but they didn’t. As I struggled to get to the top I found myself sinking deeper. I then realized I was in the ocean and I remembered the water was very cold and the more I sank the darker it got and I couldn’t breath and was panicking. I then woke up terrified!

-Edricka 2016-11-03 4:54:03

This is a long one but I’ll try to sum it up. I had a dream my fiancé and I were in a theme park we got separated and I went into a closet of some sort where I tried on purses and shoes for a while. I left and ended up in open ocean that had several concrete platforms connected to a building. I was swimming around with a lot of people like it was apart of the park. My fiancé swam over to me and we were just floating for a bit. Suddenly people started screaming and I looked in the water which looked miles deep and saw black stuff being pumped into the water. One by one everyone started vomiting the black stuff. My fiancé did before me and I watched it happen right as I started to vomit. He started to sink and so did I. Somehow I overcame the urge to vomit and I tried to stop him from sinking but it was like our bodies were paralyzed and we sank straight down. Eventually I was able to move and I grabbed him and swam to the top. I’m not sure if he lived or died.

    -Tony Crisp 2016-11-04 14:12:22

Edricka – Better long than two-liners – makes a big difference.

I don’t know whether it is happening more frequently to people, or it is just people sending me these dreams. For the dream suggests that you are on the verge of a big change – it is positive or negative depending on your reactions, and at the moment your reactions are somewhat anxious.

You started the dream in a relaxed mood, of following your own interests. This led you to the ocean, which in dreams represent the huge unconscious part of our life. There were still connections with everyday living shown by the building and concrete platforms – representing safely. See http://dreamhawk.com/inner-life/the-unconscious-2/

But your relaxed state led you to become aware of the immense depth of you, and this led to a scared reaction. The black and vomiting is also representing stuff within you that you needed to bring up. For vomiting is an action that is spontaneous, and you have little control of. Often, in dreams it is a sign of a last ditch attempt to bring up, discharge of experience disturbing emotions or trauma.

I see the dream as an attempt to open to expanding your awareness. See http://dreamhawk.com/inner-life/extending-your-awareness/

    Tony

      -Edricka 2016-11-06 7:57:14

Thanks! Not sure if this changes anything about the meaning but I’ve had this dream more than once.

-Rose 2016-10-29 4:39:26

I had a dream like last night. I was talking with my sister then all of the sudden I fell into a familiar body of water, it was small and I didn’t think it was deep. As time progressed the water got deeper, and darker. It became an ocean. I tried to swim but it seemed impossible. I gave up. Then I awoke.

    -Tony Crisp 2016-10-31 9:46:09

Rose – It would have been helpful to know what you were talking with your sister about, for it triggered a powerful reaction.

A pool of water indicates that you had entered a state of mind in which you begin to be aware of things that are usually unconscious. See http://dreamhawk.com/inner-life/the-unconscious-2/

Then your awareness literally began to know the vast being you are, for the ocean is the huge awreness that is our primal self – which most people are totally unaware of. The human personality – the You that you call yourself, with a name, is only a tiny thing. But we need to remember that having a personality with self awareness is a very new thing and has only existed for a short time. Before that we were like animals that lived only in the Life Will – what we usually call instincts. So the development of self awareness was an immense step, and left us very vulnerable, and still does.

Many people as their awareness reaches beyond what they feel is their normal self feel scared. Such resistances cause us to create awful dreams and fears as a means of avoiding our own inner world and its wonders. We feel that we will be swallowed up and we will die. It is important to say that when we meet the experience of powerlessness through becoming aware of the hugeness of your Life, which we are usually unaware if, it feels like something alien or attacking, and it is a shock.

When you gave up it was like the death of the self you know, but it could also be the birth of a better self. For the sort of loss if self you faced was not a taking away of anything but an expansion in which your present self is kept but an enormous amount is added. Rather like a baby knowing what is to be an adult. To explore more you can use http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/acting-on-your-dream/#BeingPerson

-Jaselle 2016-10-27 22:37:51

Hi. I had this dream today. I was in this clean, clear watered pool with several people and a little girl drowned that looked familiar… I tried to see if she was consious so I slapped her in the face … I seeb her eyes rolling around and then I started CPR … She choked and survived… I don’t get my dream. Please help me…

    -Tony Crisp 2016-10-30 10:46:56

Jaselle – Being in a pool of clear water indicates that were in a state of mind which allowed you to have clear awareness of what is usually hidden from – is therefore deep within you.

The little girl is you at that age, so you recovered a memory of what happened to you. As you read, “This is about being or feeling overwhelmed by something.” Something happened to you that was emotionally overwhelming. But you have brought that memory back to life – or at least you are capable of doing so – especially if you use http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/acting-on-your-dream/#BeingPerson

I dreamed two dreams in one night. In the first dream my deceased brother was alive and he drowned. I picked him up and held him to the sky and cried with such anguish that it woke me up. The pain was acutely painful and real when I woke. About an hour later, I dreamed that another person whom I did not know drowned. I didn’t want this to happen and didn’t want to feel the same pain. At that moment, I woke up again. I have been bothered by the feelings all day.
