Wave Tidal Wave Tsunami

Any release of emotional or sexual energy. The reason this image is used is that when we feel enormous release of emotions such as might happen when we fall in love, have a baby, or are publicly condemned, our ego often feels carried along by the experience rather than in control. We may have learned how to ride such waves as surfers do. This requires confidence, daring and balance. If we can do it we can open ourselves to much greater range of feeling or change than if we felt threatened, overcome or powerless. Even happiness may be repressed due to feeling threatened. Anxiety or depression is one of these enormous waves that may threaten to engulf us, and so is one of the human conditions the tidal wave represents. Yet if we face it and meet it can be an enormously transformative influence. See Dream Yoga – Tsunami.

But huge waves cause many people enormous fear or terror. Often this is because of a past experience such as attack or rape. But dreams are not simply replays of the awful emotions, but are ways you can meet and transform them into healing. See Life’s Little Secrets; Secrets of Power Dreaming; Summing Up

The following examples illustrate our relationship with the forces of Life within us.

‘My husband and I were standing looking at the sea’s surface. It was just falling night. I saw a mass of dark shapes, thought it would be a school of fish. Then we were looking at water birds, maybe ducks, again dark shapes as the light had almost gone. Then there was a hole in the sea, like a belly button, I was wondering what it was, how was it being made, was there something under the water? Something very big was coming up to the surface very close to me. It shot me to wake.’ Ginny Q.

Ginny and her husband had been exploring the content of their dreams. The image of the sea shows Ginny sensing there are enormous depths to her own being, and something big – a previously unconscious insights and feelings – are becoming conscious. Unfortunately the fear woke her – unfortunate because: We can interfere with the life saving process behind dreams actions because often we are  scared or even terrified of experiencing things that might be necessary to keep us balanced. An example of this is in the following:

I am in a very dark, bleak house, with a young boy. It is night outside and the house is isolated. A dark, shadowy, Thing, is trying to get into the house. I am terrified of it, and I am holding the young boy behind me protectively while I try to keep the door closed with my foot, as the Thing batters at it. – James H.

The interference in this case is that most people block the action of SR by repressing the feelings involved. But James explored his dream by imagining opening the door and meeting the Thing. When he did this, feelings from childhood arose – the young boy. He felt the fear of the German bombs he had experienced in his youth. He realised that this hidden – shadowy – fear had kept him from taking risks in life. In meeting the Thing he was now free of that fear. Most of the shadowy creatures of our dreams are expressions of similar fears or hurts, and if met, can be just as transformative.

‘A small speed boat was at sea. But the sea dissolved anybody who fell in. One man fell in but held himself together as a blob of water and jumped back to the speedboat. I remember the words ‘The sea is a great solvent’.’ Tim P.

Tim is aware of his unconscious sense of being a part of the huge ocean of life or energy. In it one might lose sense of identity. In the end, identity is ‘held together’ by one’s own belief in oneself.

‘I am either standing at the edge of the sea or near, when suddenly enormous tidal waves appear in the distance and are coming closer. I know they will engulf me, I turn and run away. Sometimes they do overtake me, other times I wake up.’ Mrs A. V.

We can run from pleasure and wider insight, just as much as from pain or fear.

On the first night I slept with my present wife I noticed she struggled with her breathing. While she was asleep I spoke to her suggesting she would relax and allow her breathing to be easy. Within moments she responded. This encouraged me and I suggested her whole body would relax, and the barriers within her dissolve, allowing healing and well-being to be experienced. Within ten minutes she suddenly awoke and told me a dream.

She was at the rear of a house sunbathing with her family, feeling very relaxed and happy. As she sank into the enjoyment waves, like a tidal wave began to roll up her body. The pleasure was so intense she couldn’t take any more and woke up.

Waves: Impulses, feelings and emotions, such as sexuality, anxiety, anger or fear. Waves can also indicate an impulse such as life in one that has its beginnings from a mysterious source. See Sea

Idioms: All at sea; plenty more fish in the sea; lost at sea; stranger things happen at sea; between the devil and the deep blue sea.

I dreamt a huge wave, knocked the house I was in off its foundation, but a man held it in place until I got out, and he said, ” you will be alrigt”, because I was crying.

I had a dream last night that I was in an unfamiliar house with my children by the beach it seemed to be my house but it was unfamiliar to me. My children or playing in a room I walked into the room and then I looked out the window and noticed a huge massive extremely dark wave coming towards the house it was already very close I grabbed my children and told them that a huge wave was coming and had huddled them in a corner this out there for about a minute I waited for the wave to come and it still hadn’t hit the house so I looked back up out the window and the wave was smaller than when I had first seen it the wave hit the house and it shook the house but just kept going didn’t destroy anything and I don’t remember anything else have to that I’ve been feeling kind of down lately and I’m thinking cut the darkness is a representing the way that I’ve been feeling lately I was scared in my dream and terrified when I saw the wave it first but then the second time I saw the wave and it has grown smaller then my fear wasn’t as bad

So, I have this reaccurring dream I’m at my dads house on the beach somewhere in NC and large waves start slamming into shore and houses. It’s always the same until now. The waves are larger than the house and it’s so loud and damaging. The force that is slamming into the house is unimaginable. I wish i understood dreams!

1st time dream about a tidal wave last night, pretty cool. I was in a city some where on the street below high rises. Someone brings my attention to an approaching tidal wave, it was amazing to see the force of the ocean, no panick, i will just get to higher ground. Climbing a ladder, but not fast enough I was submerged, still no panick. Then two girls I went to elementary school pulled me out of the water. We stood there looking at the damage. ??? Im pretty curious as to the meaning, maybe it will come to me further down the road, but thanks for any insight.

I had a dream I was in a car with a couple and their son (I knew them in my dream but not in real life). My daughter was there too. We got to the beach and the waves were huge. Next minute we were all floating in the surf with lots of other people (no one was panicking?). I was holding their son and they had my daughter and all of the sudden I was about 100 feet above the ocean on a massive wave and I dropped, holding onto this child to try to protect him. We landed in the water below and we’re ok but gasping for breath after going under a bit (I’m not a strong swimmer). Then the immediate panic of where is my daughter? And the parents of the child I’m holding? And I woke up.

Hi Tony,

I had a very vivid dream, I feel like I can remember every detail, of sitting on the back porch of a beach house with family watching the ocean. I see a huge dark webbed fin in the water then all of a sudden the water rushes towards us. I point and yell but no one hears me. I turn to run in the house and at that second it is filled to the ceiling with water. I can’t breath and can’t swim out. I blink and the whole sequence starts again. Any thoughtsuggestions are appreciated. Thank you!

Dear Kim – Thank you for sharing an interesting dream with us!
Every image and person in your dreams is an expression of your own life process. As such it is alive and intelligent and is something sent to help you. A dream is like a projection from a movie projector, except that you are the projector.
Everything you see as outside you is coming from you, your emotions, your fears, your beliefs, your joys and explorations and are all you, clothed in the dream images and drama.
The greatest truth we have found in exploring dreams – not interpreting them – is that we are alone with ourselves in the world of our dream. If we can acknowledge and admit that our terrors we dream are actually our past hurts or fears that we have not faced presenting themselves for us to heal; that the ghosts and demons that can rampage about our night are embodiment’s of our fears and ideas presented to us as truths; that our wonderful visions and insights are an expression of our own infinite potential, then we can walk a pathway to finding what we really are. Remember that you are more than you appear.
You wrote: “and everyone told me I was watching a movie but it wasn’t a movie it was real” and I feel that this could be a first step into lucid dreaming, because “everyone”, and so every other aspect in your inner world that was not asleep, knew you were dreaming; they knew that you are the projector and the dream is the movie.
    See http://dreamhawk.com/inner-life/lucid-dreaming/
Becoming aware of that is a big change and in your dream you do perceive it as threatening.
When we begin to meet the Hugeness that we are, we often react to it in our dreams or in waking with fear or panic. So we dream of being attacked by aliens or frightening creatures; or being swallowed by a whale or something huge, a tsunami, or even possessed by evil entities. If we realise that they are things we have created through our own fear we will pass on.
You wrote: “I felt like I couldn’t I had no control over anything”.
So in your dream you are aware that while you sleep your conscious self is largely or totally unconscious, and while you sleep your voluntary muscles are paralysed – therefore another will or motivating force moves your body. So you have a Conscious Will, and what I will call a Life Will. The first one we have experience of as we can move our arm or speak in everyday activities; but the second will takes over when we sleep.
    See http://dreamhawk.com/approaches-to-being/the-lifestream/
The children in your dream I see as the “young” aspects of you which have not become aware yet; they are still sleeping.
A way to become more aware of what is going in in your (inner) world is self-observation.

Through simple self-observation one gradually arrives at a form of insight which leads to a transcending of oneself as you stood prior to the insights. One may even arrive at a massive altered state of awareness – an insight into the impermanence of your present personality, and the experience of liberation arising from it.
Observing your own ebb and flow of thoughts and feelings, your own habits and responses to things, is one of the most powerful of tools to use in transforming your life. This also leads to a fuller connection with your intuitive connection with your core.
Much of our behaviour is largely or wholly unconscious. Becoming aware of something can by itself produce a change. If you are not aware of how you act or respond, there is less likelihood of satisfying change.
    See http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/self-observation/
“Grand” in the context of your dream means large or important; I see your “grand”child as a symbol for becoming aware of the Hugeness that you are which awareness is developing.
So be patient and gentle with yourself while “diving into the new and unknown”.

Dear Brittany – I feel your dream expresses the possibilities to explore more of your inner world which you become aware of now that you have freed yourself from a relationship in which you did not feel happy.
A cove is a small sheltered bay in the shoreline of a sea, river, or lake and they have usually narrow, restricted entrances and are often circular or oval.
I think the cove in your dream reflects your perceiving yourself as somewhat imprisoned in the „circle of (inner) friends“ which was part of your life with your ex boyfriend.
The wave of release which frees you from these self imposed limits, carries you to a house which you do not know yet.
When you dream of a house, you are meeting a hugely important and many sided representation of yourself. It is both many faceted and multidimensional.
Although you cannot see it, your mind, along with your beliefs, has a particular structure or form. If the shape of your mind could be built into a three dimensional model, such as a house, you would probably be able to see that your mind has as unique a shape as your fingerprints. But at the same time there would be features of your mental ‘house’ that were very much the same as most of the people within your own culture. If there were a museum of the mind you would see in it that the human mind has altered its shape in an evolutionary fashion just as the human body has. The model of minds of even a few centuries ago would have a much larger area devoted to religious feelings and thoughts. The area dealing with personal identity would be much larger in the modern mind.
Each dream image holds enormous data, emotional response, and created patterns of behaviour. So in considering the house in your dream you need to remember you are in touch with a full surround databank of fantastic information about you, your past and your possibilities.
In this “new state of mind” you also meet “another person” which could be a symbol of a different part of yourself you are able to meet now.

I recently broke things off with a boyfriend who I thought I would spent the rest of my life with. I wasn’t fully happy and passionate about our relationship ever.
Last night I had a dream about me in a cove with a bunch of people and a huge tidal wave came in and flodding the whole area. Carrying me away into a house I’ve never been to. Once the wave had passed there was another person in the dream.

What does all of this mean?

I was standing in a building with double doors facing the beach. I was with family,. I turned around to look at the ocean it seemed to be getting rougher. I looked away and back again and it became even rougher.. The horizon began to swell up. I looked away to warn my family and then back once more to see a giant towering wave, like a skyscraper. I felt like an ant. I closed the doors rapidly as a feeble attempt to shield us from this massive thing… They were industrial style French doors, but not necessarily built to withstand anyt type of impact. Weak looking in retrospect… But when the impact occurred there was a enormous shaking of the doors. They moved back and forth violently until it was over. Not only had they held strong, not a drop of water came through the doorway. We walked away… Looking back at calmer seas but over the devastation it had brought.

Hi, Tony
M from NE India and I wanted help really bad.
My parents changed our Home 4 times which is not common in my place to change villages and church. Even in cities we are groupies and divide our localities into villages according to ones own tribe or build and go to church of own tribe. So now I’ve become a victim to depression and anxiety because I’m like Jack of all trades but master of none. I lost most of all my connections and my roots and depression and my anxiety does not help me anyway.
I started having dreams about a year or so but almost everyday a few months back and the ending was always almost the same where I suffer huge panic attacks cause I used to be in a helpless situation also filled with great fear and no one to help me left cold and so lonely. Waking up I would be very depressed and have real panic attacks severely.
A few weeks back M having similar dreams but now I got lots of courage to fight off my fears and feel really hopeful and happy also just nearly gets what I want but wake during these times. Now when I awake I feel depression and anxiety not like before but still. I was amazed by my dream and find it hard to believe myself. Does it mean I will be healed from my problems or life is playing with me. Depression and anxiety are really too heavy for me but I still hope I will overcome this. Sorry I could not elaborate my dreams. Is that okay?
Can you please kindly guide me
Thank you so much.

I just submitted a comment on a dream about a running into a tidal wave and forgot to include something:
In-between the times I ran into the wave and was in the forest with people I stepped in one of the murky puddles and was stung by something that I guessed was a jellyfish but did not look like one, it did not look like any sea creature I had ever seen
thank you again

I had a very interesting dream the other night that i was hoping you could help me understand:

It is night and I am on a beach facing the ocean. A huge tidal wave or tsunami (I think I considered it a tidal wave in my dream) is right in front of me and coming toward me, the water is either dark or murky (I think it was murky). I gaze at the wave in fear, but not the same fear I would have if it were a real wave, I am not afraid for my life. I run toward the wave and dive in; I know the wave is big and unknown but I also know that this is something I must do despite being afraid. The wave is very strong and throws me around, up and down. I completely give in to this loss of control, both mentally and physically, allowing myself to be swept away and make no attempt to fight or try to swim. Eventually I am brought out to sea and am able to gain some control, however I do not really remember this part clearly and do not remember swimming strongly. Then I am in the forest, there are other people around who are both family and community. I think we are camping. There are murky puddles and sea creatures that I have never seen before. (This part of the dream is not very clear). Then I am on the beach again, vaguely aware of people around me, and I run toward the wave again, having all the same feelings as before, but this time as I run into the wave and get ready to hold my breath I am surprised to discover I can breath under water and I am still running while the wave is around me.

When reflecting on this dream I am in awe of my dream self’s courage at facing this wave and determination to dive in, as well as the calm that I felt while being taken away by the wave, I have never experienced this deep and inner stillness and calm in waking life.

Thank you

Ps. I forgot to say that I don’t know if my dream was of a tsunami or a tidal wave, and does it make any difference anyway?! Thanks again for any insights….much appreciated. Shell
