Bath Bathing

For many people the bath links with feelings of being able to relax and spend time alone without demands from other people. Therefore it indicates relaxation; cleansing; wanting to ‘come clean’ or be rid of guilt.

Such cleansing could depict a change of heart or forgiveness where old feelings are washed away. To do this you may need to cry or release and ‘wash out’ long held emotions.

But some bathing dreams or fantasies often depict the bath as a form or ritual which is getting one ready for something, perhaps a new experience, or the deepening of ones experience in an important area of your life, such as sexuality. Such an initiation might involve the meeting with your feelings or fears about relationship or your life situation – perhaps meeting your own male/female self more fully.

Bathing also includes nakedness, and therefore vulnerability, the revealing of your secrets or things you are sensitive or ashamed of. This might embody marriage/relationship intimacy.

If you are in the bath with someone then it can suggest being immersed in an influence of some sort; deep sharing, perhaps blending of qualities.

Some dreams show bathing as a powerful change or renewal and may sometimes relate to feelings about life in the womb.

Also: Need to cleanse the body internally. See: baptism, swimming pool.

Bathing in a river: Being open to flowing feelings and urges within yourself; allowing yourself to be influenced from within by urges toward change or growth or expansion of awareness.

Bathing in the sea: Being open to a more universal – less self centred – awareness of your relationship with life.

Jacuzzi: A jacuzzi is often a shared experience; or if it is a big bath like Japanese bath it can be like swimming pool, a shared experience. What is shared would be shown by the events and mood of the dream. Also it is a massage and so can be extra relaxing, or irritating if you do not like it.

Example: Now the imagery gets more specific and I watch/experience an exquisite Japanese ritual of meeting, touch, massage, that is leading to sex. Several young women are with me in a large bath. They are not trying to be directly sexual, but are getting close, touching me, massaging, allowing me to feel their flesh near me. The beauty of it is in understanding how wise and artistic the whole approach is. I see it is to lead my awareness out of being bound by everyday affairs. It diffuses concentration on particulars of external life and gradually opens my senses to feel and allow pleasure. It helps the mind to drop fixation on externals and allow it to drop boundaries until one senses oneself as in a semi dream state. This allows sex to be not just a particular thing; not just a physical penetration or being entered, but something that connects you emotionally and mysteriously with another person, and to the huge mystery that is that person and oneself. Ones partner is not simply a human being, but the very essence of the female principle, merging with the male principle. Graham H.

Useful questions:

Can I define my relationship with the bath and the outcome of this dream?

Do I experience any change in this dream, and if so what is it?

If I am being cleansed, what am I preparing for?

If I am with someone who am I with and in what way?

i dreamt of my boss taking a shower fully dressed. he had another person with him who looked exactly like him, as though it were his clone. somehow, my boss was bathing himself through the other person. something like the other person is the one that was getting wet on behalf of my boss. i just can’t really explain it…

I just had a dream where I was taking a bath while one of my professors, who I am very close to, was sitting right next to the tub & we were just having a conversation. It was like it was a super normal thing- I was even taking off my makeup and false eyelashes while talking to him! What on earth does this mean?

Hello Tony,

I have been dreaming taking a bath naked outside and people can see me, it happens very often. Can’t remember how many times i dreamt about it. Same scenario.

I dreamed that I was taking a bath in front of a window and this guy that I really like kept walking past watching me. It was as if I was trying to seduce him, instead of joining me, he kept walking back and forth as if he got pleasure from just watching.

I had a dream where someone gave me a very hot water but I took it to a tap, reduced it and diluted the water to a warm state. And I took it to an open place where I was taken my bath

Dear Michael – Your dream may reflect how you deal with a situation in which potentially painful emotions or passions are expressed.
You coped with this situation by adding cold water and it is after this that you are willing to immerse yourself in these feelings.
To get a direct feeling experience of what this dream is telling you, you can use http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/acting-on-your-dream/#BeingPerson
    You can explore what you feel when someone gives you very hot water and why after diluting the water to a warm state you decide to take a bath in an open place;
By becoming aware of what your dream figure is feeling in the dream the dream is often more understandable.
Feelings in dreams are nearly always undistorted and the next step could be to see if you can recognise where these feelings (did) occur in your waking life.

Um…I dreamed last night that I was bathing with my clothes on. In my dream if felt normal, but then I got out to get dry and I tried pulling my boots off (they were western styled and I have never owned a pair of this style) but they fell apart, separating at the soles.

I was dreaming that i will take a bath with my bf, the bathroom is not really a bathroom it just like one of the room in our old house before. I cant take a bath because my bf left me, then someone ask me to print her a test paper, then i assist her and my sister do the printing if that test paper. When i continue to take a bath, my father and his worker is in that room also so i cant a take a bath again, i move to another place to take bath but before i continue bathing my old friends is in their again thats why i wake up that i cant take a bath. Thats all hope you interpret my dream. Im sorry im not good in english.

Hi so I just had a short 2 hour sleep and I dreamt that I was having a bath with a fully clothed baby and I was fully clothed as well while a man looked to be somebodies husband (I knew he was somebodies husband because I saw rings on his finger) well he just chatted to me he was outside the bath and the baby was his and we were just discussing everyday life and I was joking around with his baby and then his wife came in and started yelling and she helped me out of the bath and I went to get dressed even though I had worn my clothes in the bath their were my jeans cut up on the floor and people were standing there ready to hurt me and the husband.
I’ve never had any sort of relationship with a married man ever not even a friendship. What could this mean?

-tanya 2015-04-15 9:49:29

Hi, I dreamt I purchased a home and saw afterwards the bathtub was broken, it had a hole and you could see rusty medal rods almost like rebar but smaller and crisscrossed.

    -Anna 2015-04-16 7:55:51

Tanya – When you dream of a house, you are meeting a hugely important and many sided representation of yourself. It is both many faceted and multidimensional.
Although you cannot see it, your mind, along with your beliefs, has a particular structure or form. If the shape of your mind could be built into a three dimensional model, such as a house, you would probably be able to see that your mind has as unique a shape as your fingerprints. But at the same time there would be features of your mental ‘house’ that were very much the same as most of the people within your own culture.
A hole not only suggests female attributes such as receptiveness, they also indicate the unknown or what is still unconscious.
So did you make a start of looking at and cleaning out old habits and/or beliefs? I ask because you were able to have a look at what is underneath the bath, and so some”thing” or some approach has “opened you up”.
What you have uncovered in yourself is the next thing to look at on your inner journey towards feeling more whole:
    http://dreamhawk.com/dream-dictionary/whole-2/
So what do you associate with things that are rusty? Do you see rust as old beliefs – foundations in your inner house – which you could question again?
Although there are a few beliefs or behaviours that are endorsed by cultures in all parts of the world – such as the taboo against incest and certain forms of murder – there are no beliefs which we can call essentially human. Our dreams tend to reflect the cultural and personal beliefs we have accepted from our upbringing, or that we have discovered for ourselves. One must therefore be careful of looking to dreams for endorsement of our personal beliefs.
However, what is important to understand, is that our dreams can graphically illustrate our beliefs and what influence they have upon our decision making, responses and relationships. The importance lies in the fact that many of our beliefs are unconscious. They were absorbed in childhood and often remain without any conscious evaluation

I dreamt i was on my own relaxing in the bath. I heard buzzing and saw a hornet. It landed on the wall at the end of the bath near my feet. I couldnt move. I just stayed still. Then it disappeared and i felt relief.

    -joy 2015-04-15 4:23:19

Last night i dreamed i was in a bathtube in the middle of a church service. The preacher was up praying and people started to pour into sanctuary. I got embarrased because of the crowd and closed the curtain and let the water out. I remember getting dressed in some clothes in the bath tube.

      -Anna 2015-04-16 15:05:36

Joy – I wonder what you associate with a Church. See http://dreamhawk.com/dream-dictionary/church-chapel-temple/
I see your bathing in the middle of a church service as the act of baptism.
Fundamentally, baptism means a change in the stance or condition of your inner attitudes. It means relinquishing fixed opinions and having an open mind. It means opening the doors of your being to new experiences, to new possibilities, pleasurable and painful. It means learning to love without bending others to your will, without grasping them for your own needs. It also means becoming a channel for that river of Life to flow through. In this way we can become workers in the vineyard – that is, co-workers with the processes of growth and evolution in the worlds of nature. But more than anything it means being washed clean in the river of Life.
Sometimes we can feel vulnerable at first when we let go of “the walls of fixed opinions” we have built around us. We are not used to “being naked” in front of other people.
So ask yourself if feeling exposed and embarrassed in your dream reflects how you feel about people knowing who you are?
Perhaps you need more private time to get to know the inner world you have created?
      http://dreamhawk.com/inner-life/inner-world/
And perhaps you need time to learn when you feel like letting others know your true self and when you rather not open up that way?

Hi there! Last night, i dreamed about me taking a bath with someone i dont even remember his face or even his name. The only thing I remembered is that he is a Male, that I myself do have some feelings for him. We were both naked in the shower, and we were talking something and it was like we already knew each other for a very long time. He scrubs and even massage my back while he is talking to me. And the feeling is that I am very very much happy with him! then I woke up. What does it mean?

    -henry 2014-11-17 12:41:01

@ donna it meant that the man is ur spiritual husband

-Trish 2012-07-31 22:25:28

Tony, I had a dream last night where my two children took me to the bathroom. There was a small furry animal in the bathtub. They were looking up at me anxiously, and I said to them, “but children, there are not two of you, there is only one. Sterling is the only child.” (Sterling is my one child, 7 months old. My husband and I have been discussing only having one child)
