How To Give A Flux
The Flux
I was with a woman who was on my right. I have no clear picture of her face and no sense of who she was. But I did feel close to her emotionally, and we were holding hands. Together we walked into a large building. I have the impression of it being a square tall block, like an old-fashioned office building, but quite nice looking and well preserved. I believe my companion had been in the place before. I say this because I was feeling slightly uncertain and she was feeling confident and supportive, walking ahead of me and slightly pulling me along.
Obviously, I was experiencing lucid waking dreaming. See Lucid Waking Dreaming
Inside the front door of the building was a wide passageway probably about 15 or 20 feet wide leading straight ahead. Not far along this corridor something completely filled the space in front of us. It looked like a film of frog’s spawn, but much more ethereal, perhaps like patterns of energy with just a little material substance.
With no real hesitation the woman and I walked into this wall of energy. I believe we knew more or less what would happen – that we would be absorbed and become wholly a part of this life form. As we walked into it I was trying to analyse what was happening and what it felt like. I lost all sense of my body as a dense form, but I could still feel my partner’s hand in mine in a very delicate way – again like energy playing upon energy. I could feel that the energy had totally penetrated me and was working on me in a healing way that would transform all of me. My impression was that thousands of individuals had merged to share their abilities and being with me, and I was sharing with them, forming an amazing wholeness. It felt very healing. Also, I felt that we could decide upon our own movement, and it seemed as if we were still walking within this life form. So, I knew we could walk out again and return to our solid body form.
From here on all sorts of speculations and perhaps what might amount to experiments on my part developed. I understood that when one entered this living moving energy it totally penetrated one’s being, and one’s body was transformed and healed of any weakness or irregularities. I felt that it transformed one’s personality also. I was experiencing being in and out of the energy, and while out of it I felt great peace and well-being.
Later I realised that in contact with an individual one could merge with that individual and experience the same feeling, and the loss of the dense body form. I shared this with some people, and gradually came to realise that it was only when you had enough people in the group that a permanent energy flux, such as we had first walked into, could exist. So, I was going about trying to create another house with a permanent energy flux going on in it. If there were a lot of people involved, there would always be sufficient numbers within the flux to keep it active. But I realised one needed at least six people to give a large enough energy flux for others to see and enter. I also realised that people who had not entered the flux would feel threatened by it and would try to destroy it and the building it was in. So, I realised there had to be some level of secrecy.
Some thinkers, like Jung and Sheldrake, see individual human consciousness like an island in a huge ocean in which there are countless other islands. Above the surface of the water is our waking self-awareness which gives us a sense of separate existence, with definite boundaries where the shore meets the sea. Beneath the surface however, one island is connected to all other islands. The land stretches away under the waves and rises here and there into other islands. So, it is thought, personal awareness, beneath our everyday consciousness, shades off into a connection with a collective unconscious we all share. Through this connection we may be able to arrive at insights into other people otherwise denied to us.
If this connection is a fundamental part of everybody’s life, the waters of self and the waters of the ocean are not separated. Jung called this universal consciousness the collective unconscious. Other cultures have given it other names – the ocean of Brahm for instance in Hinduism. Within Buddhism there is also the phrase, ‘the dewdrop slips into the shining sea’. Australian Aborigines call it The Dreamtime.
What you believe and are convinced of creates your own reality. This apparent reality is called a paradigm, it is the belief of the masses – and their beliefs are what they feel are reality. See Archetype of the Paradigm
Irish physicist John Stewart Bell put forward a quantum theorem that has revolutionised the way reality is considered. In brief, the theorem states that when two sub-microscopic particles are split and moved to a distance from each other, the action on, or of, particle ‘A’, is instantaneously reproduced with particle ‘B’. This interaction does not rely on any known link or communication and is considered to stand above normal physical laws of nature, as it occurs faster than light.
Many modern physicists, working with the information arising in experiments with quantum theory, tell us that our view of the world is based upon our blindness, and is very limited, and through its limitation, unreal. Yet this view we take to be the REAL universe. Therefore, when examining the model of our mind, we need to leave space on one of the walls for a door. It needs to be a door that opens onto a different sort of universe than the one we may previously have felt to be solid reality. It is a universe that alters its appearance – no, its very nature – according to the way we observe it. Time and space are transcended. David Bohm, an eminent physicist, goes as far as to say that all things in our observable universe are inextricable linked. Nothing has separate existence.
It is obvious to most people that they have never or cannot reach this Flux. This is because we have an Upstairs aspect of us and a downstairs part of us. The upstairs is your normal daily awareness. The downstairs is as aspect of your mind that is usually hidden. One way of saying this is to say the upstairs is what we remember through experiencing things through our body and our thoughts. Those things are recorded by the brain and are just about the physical world and our experiences in it.
Another way of describing it is by thinking about what you are conscious of and what you remain unaware of. In general, a helpful way of experiencing this the part of your mind you are generally not aware of is to realise its function in memory and skills. For instance, a mass of your experience is presently not in your conscious awareness. You are therefore not aware of it. But if I pose the question – What is your present home address? – what was unconscious a moment ago becomes known and communicable. Millions of bits of other information lie unconscious in you at any one moment, along with skills not being accessed, and other functions not used. So, in this sense your conscious self is a tiny part of your total potential.
To access this apparently dark part of your mind you can try using what is described in Opening to Life. But here is something I have used to help people how to shift from their upstairs to their downstairs awareness.
Raising and Lowering Your Arms
But it helps to alter your intentions. It might help if you practice the keyboard condition, it is something that enables us to enter the downstairs and our wider awareness. It is something we have to learn to get into the deeper level of our Inner World. To do it we need to imagine our body and mind is now like a keyboard and the keys of our body and mind are no longer fixed but are capable of even gentle touches playing the keys. This is a way to allow your downstairs self to be able to wake you up to a new world.
We need to ‘hang loose’. So apart from attitudes, the first step of practice is to learn a form of relaxation in which our body has dropped unnecessary tensions and is like a keyboard ready to be played.
I find it helps if we create something of this feeling consciously, holding our body, our emotions, our sexuality, mind and memories as if they were keys upon which the inner dramatist can play. In a sense we are seeking to create a condition similar to sleep. As we fall asleep we let go of our control over what we think, what we do with our body, and what we fantasy. Our ‘I’, our decision making self has relaxed and left the stage free for our downstairs to create its realisations. So in approaching our this we need to take on a similar relaxed state without actually going to sleep.
Once you have a sense of this I want you to stand, close your eyes and then raise your arms up as when you are asked to ‘put your ands up’. Do this several times. In doing so you have used your conscious upstairs self to make the movements. This exactly what we do most of the time. But now I want you to remember getting in the Keyboard Condition and simply be aware of your arms watching them. When you raised your arms you were doing it, but now I want you watch to see if your arms themselves wants to make any gently movements. Be aware of your breathing and realise that your body does that by itself, gently. So allow your arms to be moved in a similar way if they want to.
This might not occur at first. So, try consciously circling your arms fast and as you stop see if your arms want to make any movement. Try it several times until you manage to allow your arms their own freedom.
Carl Jung says that in doing this exercise, “we must be able to let things happen in the psyche. For us, this becomes a real art of which few people know anything. Consciousness is forever interfering, helping, correcting, and negating, and never leaving the simple growth of the psychic processes in peace. It would be a simple enough thing to do if only simplicity were not the most difficult of all things. It consists solely in watching objectively the development of any fragment of fantasy.” He even suggests letting one’s hands fantasy and tell their story.
Although I have already quoted the next experience in my publication THE INSTANT DREAM BOOK. I use it again here because it describes the spontaneity and unanticipated nature of opening to our Downstairs self so well. Su had attended a seminar in which I explained how to work with the process. She describes her experience as follows: “When Tony came to explain how to allow one’s body freedom to the group, I had just reached the point of despair with my marriage. A few days before I had taken the first step towards breaking it. From the first my experience of allowing the process itself, directly or indirectly, into my outer life. It was never a separate thing going on inside only.
“Tony explained to us about letting whatever came, come. I did not understand too well but lay down with the others and he came to each of us briefly and moved our arms and left us lying. Perhaps two minutes passed when I felt a distinct twitching around my brow, which was repeated, and then it spread down my face, a downward pressing movement. My face was involved then in a big muscular movement, pressing down, seeming to flatten the face, and then spread down the body towards the feet. Gradually my whole body became involved in big waves of pressing movement which flowed down, lifting, and tossing my legs, so that my heels were banging on the floor. Wave succeeded wave. I did as he said, and let it happen, using the skills to relax which I had learnt. I wasn’t afraid, although I couldn’t imagine what was happening to me. Instead I felt happy and elated, warmed through. I knew I had found something of great significance, but it was many months before I could put words to it. It remained an intriguing mystery, like a dropping away of chains, or a touching of promise, while I passed through the pain of divorce. I feel that my experience that day released considerable energy. It did not break my marriage – that would have happened anyway. But I received strength which I used for my needs at that time. Months later it came to me with the force of revelation, that I had been born that day.”
