Spider
Often the dependent emotions and conflicts one feels ‘caught in’ connected with mother or family; any emotions you don’t want to ‘handle’, such as those surrounding a spouse leaving; wanting to ensnare, or feeling trapped by someone. Sometimes symbolises a mother’s power, as in the way we are caught in the web of her desires and emotions. So inability to become independent of the mother.
But it can also be feeling caught and wrapped up to be eaten later sort of feeling, so being ‘handled’ by someone; or having all the time to watch for subtle signals in order to survive. See big spider dream
The spider can also be used as a symbol of sexual orgasm, but only if we are terrified, disgusted or guilty about such feelings.
The spider can also depict any emotions you don’t want to ‘handle’, such as those surrounding a spouse leaving; wanting to ensnare, or feeling trapped by someone; the basic survival instincts in us such as a spider might have – can I eat, or will I be eaten in this meeting/relationship? This level of our sensory and feeling perception is important. Like a spider it keeps one of your feet/fingers on the web or influences that connect you with other people and the world. Like the spider, if you are wise, you thereby know something of what is coming your way – do you advance or run? See: Web.
The following waking fantasy by a man undergoing depth therapy shows an aspect of the spider. | |
I realise there is something I am looking for, and I don’t find it in my wife, or at least I don’t sense it in her. It is a frightening thing and partly exciting. This leads me on to fantasising a struggle with a young woman. It is about wanting to have sex, but seems to be some sort of power struggle. The image was of a smart very confident and aggressive young woman. She was attractive and attracted, but her approach was one of attack, so to have a relationship I needed to fight her. What I appear to be meeting is that I have the sex drive, but what I am facing is a monster. In fact I have the image of a huge spider that comes out from hiding and drags me helpless into its lair, its many eyes shining. I’m afraid. It’s not that my sex drive abates, but within this fantasy you have to time it just right. One must wait for the ‘beast’ to become passive then dash in and plunge into the wonderful hairy cavity. Otherwise the ‘beast’ will rip you apart. It is exactly like the horror films one sees of the monster that drags men or women back to its lair. It is actually all about my fear of women based on past pain. I want sex, but to get it I have to confront memories of being torn apart emotionally by a woman.
Here is fascinating dream about spiders, and its exploration:
I found your email on the internet for dream interpretation. If this is not correct, I am sorry to be bothering you.
I have had the same dream as I fall asleep for several years. I have it nearly every night just once, sometimes, rarely, twice as I fall asleep.
I dream that I find a dried piece of skin or scab somewhere on my body, usually my foot or my hand, tho it has varied over the years. I begin to pick at the skin/scab and scratch it until it comes off. When it comes off it unleashes a flood of seed spiders that engulf me. Another variation is I find some odd black hairs growing out of my body and when I examine them more closely they are regular sized spiders crawling out of me and they begin to engulf me.
Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. Again, if this is not correct, I am very sorry for the disruption of your time. Best C
Here is a interpretation:
Dear C – What I see with your dream of spiders is that there is a possibility of an underlying fear, so that when you begin to sink just below waking, just under the surface of your mind, this feelings of being overwhelmed arises. If it were a big thing that emerged it would be easier to deal with. But thousands of little things are difficult to handle because you kill some but there are so many left to get at you. A big thing you could hit with a cricket bat or kill it in some way, but the small things are more difficult. They are a sort of ultimate enemy. You need to find an image that enables you to deal with those feelings. An image that might be helpful is that of jumping into a very hot shower, one you can just about cope with. The water is pouring down and is going to burn up the little bugs. Another image might be that you walk quickly through flames that you are big enough to pass through with perhaps only your hairs being burnt, but the little spiders are going to get burnt up.
Were you at some time frightened of sickness? A sickness that could engulf you and you would be powerless against? If not that, then perhaps an image of something, or an idea of something that has stayed with you just under the surface of your mind. Tony
Dear Tony: Thank you….THANK YOU for getting back to me with the dream information. I am fairly well educated about things but could not come up with anything for myself. I think I may have been too close to it.
You mentioned several things that seem to “hit the nail on the head” and I will explore those. The most important thing you mentioned was that of being “powerless against” illness. I do have a life long disease that is manageable but could be fatal. I think this is where I am going to start as that is what seemed to really set off bells.
I really do thank you for this. It has not been interfered with my sleep and the dream only occurs as I fall asleep….once asleep, I am fine.
I thank you so much and I am sure that my partner thanks you as well……
Thank you…thank you….thank you…. With gratitude, C
So having seen spiders in a dream occasionally indicate an illness, if you are in any doubts it is wise to have a health check.
Covered on spiders: If they are large it might mean you feel someone will smother. Or that you have no way of escaping from someone or something.

I had a dream last night that there was a big, hairy brown spider on the floor. I screamed at my son don’t pick it up. (he is 3). He picked it up and threw it as my husband (we have been separated for 10 months). The spider landed on his face completely covering it. Then my husband grabbed it and flung it and it landed on my son’s face. He grabbed it and it flung at me but missed. What does al this mean??
There was a huge tarantula looking spider on the center of my partner’s face. In my dream, I woke up beside him to find it straddling his nose. I was frightened, so I jumped out if bed and ran into the bathroom. He followed me in. The spider jumped off his face and was looking for an escape, and I was contemplating how we could get rid of it without killing it. Then I woke up. Any thoughts??
I had dream that my family and i where in a cruise then a huge enormous spider comes and eats us, we are inside I.was scared then i end up back in the cruise and everything plays again like everything that happen in the beginning of my dream, just in the cruise eating ect. Then I go back to the spider like if I woke up I try to.find a way out then there are head of a human and they have flashlight s i look and i see noone around me i heart a voice saying go thru a tunnel where there is water i was scared to drown so i looked around for my family i didn’t see noone i scream for my mother but nothing then i woke up.
Jovanna – This is about how you deeply are linked with your mother in a way that is not good for you.
The cruise is about a relationship with your family that you cannot break away from. It is because you depend so much upon your mother that it is pictured as a great spider that will swallow you up. Maybe it is because you had a difficult birth – the tunnel you are afraid of drowning in – and that is holding you back from growing more independent.
So I suggest you imagine yourself back in the dream and go through the tunnel. It might be hard, but it is not dangerous. So please read http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/what-we-need-to-remember-about-us/#Hurt and also http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/secrets-power-dreaming/

I had a dream last night where I was making love to my wife when all of a sudden someone burst into the room and threw big black spiders over me. I Jumped up and panicked trying to get them off but they disappeared into my body!! Help can anyone analyze this dream. Thanks
I had this dream last night about going on a shopping trip with family members and friends for my wedding dress. As The dream progressed I had to go through this tunnel that was filled with webs and spiders in it. It was not so bad in the beginning of the tunnel but as I got towards the end the webs became thicker and harder to get through. As I cam to the very end there was this huge web that had a spider on it that was about the size of my hand. I did not want to go through it but than I felt a web fall down on my head/hair. This scared me and I ran through that web as fast as I could. That was the end of the dream and as I was coming out of the dream state I felt the hairs on the back of my neck standing up and what felt like the residue of the web still in my hair. Please help me understand what this means.
Thank you BEM
I dreamt that I was running from Zombies that were coming to get me bcuz I was to be making a right of passage….and once I made the right of passage then I would turn into a black spider…..then I woke up….at exactly 11:20am I had a small black spider crawl across my left calf and I didn’t kill it but I am completely terrified of spiders so I jumped off the bed and ran crying….
GothicBaby – I can understand your fear of actual spiders, having lived in Australia where spiders can be killers I would be scared too. But dream spiders or zombies are simply images that you connect with fear and cannot hurt you.

I dreamed of spiders last night they were only two spiders, one kinda look lk a turantula but not as big and the other spider was just a small spider. The bigger spider bit me in the leg, it got swollen and where the two fangs went in, was red. Can you please help me understand this dream. Thank you! -Marie L.
I had a dream of a big black spider. I saw it not knowing where it had come in, but it was in my house, well as I was trying to kill it with, sprays, smashing with a broom. As I was trying to do this I was always missing it, just couldn’t get it I mean it was so fast, that I even missed it when it was right by me running from one side to the other, then I dnt knw how but I feel and I was on my bed then it happen to show up on my left shoulder ,and really didn’t move,I told someone grab my hand and on the count of three pull me up, as that was gunna happen , he miss my hand ,then I started to slide off my bed, then by the time I got off my bed, the spider had lost ingested and let from my sight ,as I was telling the person why didn’t u grad me tight ,I could of gotten bit, then from the corner of my eye I see it run to the kitchen ,then I turn and tried finding but never found it again . What does that mean.
I just awoke from my dream and immediately wanted to write it down.
I was at an airport and there was a drunk man and everyone stepped around him and wanted to leave him but I dragged him to a chair and told him to sleep there until he felt better. Then he woke up and started coming on to me. Then I was suddenly at a hotel and there was a lot of people there and the man stayed behind and we began roaming around looking for our room but couldn’t find it. It was a large group of people, mostly friends and family members and myself. We couldn’t find the room so we began trying to find a place to stay that would accommodate all of us. The group kept getting bigger. We kept going to different houses but they were too small. We finally ended up at a large house, which turned out to be a place I used to live. All of the people were outside and we thought the weather was going to get bad. A couple of other people plus myself, were inside talking about it. Then all of sudden I was lying down talking to a friend of mine named Karen. I looked down and there was a small spider on me and I didn’t think twice and just flicked it away. But I looked down again and there was a larger one on me. This time it was ugly and I got something to flick it off of me. But then the spiders were much larger and coming from inside of me and I looked at Karen and said this is it, I’m dying. She didn’t speak and then I was standing in front of her like a white light and waving goodbye to her and saying this is it, goodbye.
Then I woke up. This is all in the same dream.
I had a dream that I was at an old house my family used to live in before we all split up. My parents divorced and I am living alone with my grandparents in VA. Also during this dream there was a spider about 2 feet in length that stood at least 1 foot high crawling and spinning a web in a barn like structure beside the house that was never there. I awoke from an alarm and fell back into another dream in which I was at a large gathering, what seemed like a wedding but more like a social gathering of sorts.
I am sitting in a GYN office with x-ray in hand, rolled up with a rubber band around it.(typical docs office wooden handle chairs, blue coushions and back. Coffee tables with magazines, end tables with lamps, very busy, people sitting around waiting.) All the sudden I realize that I have clumps of dirt in my hair, as I run my hand through my hair to dislodge the dirt, tiny black spider fall out of the dirt all over my head and floor. (this is the second time I have dreamed of spiders like this in my hair). Next thing is I am in the hallway trying to get the doctors attention, wanting him to look at the x-ray of my heart(not a typical black and white xray, very colorful) trying to get thim to look at the part that the radiologist has an arrow pointing to. Looks to me like one of the veins to my heart has a whole in it and the stupid doc will not even pay any attention, he is too busy going to another room.(hallway very crowded with staff and patients). I am not sure but I think he said I would have to have open heart surgery to fix it.
The part about the heart doesn’t really bother me, but I know it is signaficant to the dream. The spiders it more of what I remember (probably because this is the second time I have had this). What is your take on this.
I dreamed of big black spiders. i first see them at the back of my panties-see through and then they are all over my body, covering it other than my face.they are not biting me,i feel as if they are protecting me from this people pointing /or teasing at me.i go aroung this building with them around me and threathening the people with the spiders, like if you were carrying a gun or something.i feel as if, i shift in a certain way i can “shoot”or thow them at people threathening me & the end i keep saying davice(name)what are you doing to me? but i don`t feel axiety or threathened by the spiders at all.it is sort if conforting.but i real life i am scared of the spiders-small or big.what does it mean…
I dreamed of seeing a spider trap an insect in the corner of my closet. As it was devouring it, I couldn’t stop watching the feast…what does this mean?..thx
I had a dream a long time ago about a spider, the details are a lil fuzzy but from what i can remember she was scary at first but then we ended up having sex…by crawling up my johnson, but i remember that it wasnt creepy or violating…it was nice…i know…weird…weird enough for me to remember this dream years after ive had it and wonder exactly what the heck it means, ive checked online and i was expecting to find an entire underground fetishism of spiders and an explanation as to exactly why i had such a dream. But i have not found such a community…
I dream of spiders almost every night. They never eat me or overly large. They are always either in my way or attached to my leg like a tick. Sometimes there is a web, usually not. I see them often when I am awake these days. I am afraid of them now when 6 years ago I was not. Spiders haunt me no matter if I am asleep or awake. What am I experiencing? Even now as I write this, it feels like I have dreamed about asking about spiders. Please help.
T – That you dream about them so often suggests that they are an image covering feelings you have not yet face in waking.
Apart from perhaps representing your mother in a ‘caught in the mother’s power’ phase, they can also indicate poisonous irritations that are over you. But I feel that these are a cover for something you need to explore and are probably easy to rid yourself of.
So I would suggest you sit quietly without distractions, relax any obvious tensions, breath slowly and fully for a while – then imagine the spiders on you and note any change in your body. Perhaps a tension arises, or feelings or even memories of the past. Simply allow these to develop. If you cannot do it in one sitting, do it again until you can feel a resolution.
It may be that you remember an incident that happened and has since been represented by the spiders. Or even you allow yourself to feel emotions that the spiders have hidden.
