Whale
The whale can depict the powerful evolutionary drive involved in reproduction, and what lies behind individual male or femaleness. It is the beneficent power of the collective unconscious – the enormous life and mind that underlies our own little area of personal awareness. It can also indicate the ability to dive deeply into your unconscious life process and awareness.
Example: ‘I was leaning over the settee with my hands cupped under my chin looking out of the window. The view was spectacular, in that it was as if the house was situated on top of a cliff overlooking a huge bay, shaped like a horseshoe, with the house in the middle. From the sea suddenly, coming into the bay I could see three enormous whales making their way toward me. As I was staring in amazement they began to transform themselves and come up out of the water as three giant Viking like figures. They were so huge, that the water came up only to their knees and everything was moving so slowly, as they waded towards me. It was the most awe-inspiring thing I had ever seen in my life.’ Sue B.
The bay, the beautiful sea, the sperm whales/men, show Sue touching the most primordial yet inspiring aspects of her own womanhood and urge to find a mate and love. See: Religion and dreams; Sea.
Example: Tony, I had a dream last night of at least 5 or 6 gigantic, larger than life sized whales swimming in the ocean very near the shore! They were tremendous, powerful and I sensed that they were very aware of the people at the shore and their own magnitude. I wasn’t afraid; what could this mean?
Your dream shows that you are no stranger to your own inner/psychic/wider world pf awareness. Also, that the whales their size and their nearness to shore says that you are growing ever more aware of the world beyond your physical senses. The ocean itself is the huge world that most of us are unaware of for the sea, with its surface and hidden depths, lends itself to depicting this human experience of known and unknown regarding yourself. The enormity of the sea is also a visible image of the enormity of your own inner world – much of it unknown and lying in pre-birth or pre-speech – and also the relationship you have with the processes underlying your existence, that you exist by yet know so little about. The sea holds vast treasures, curiosities, and your history.
Idioms: Big fish; big fish in a small pond; cold fish; fish for compliments; fish out of water; queer fish; smell something fishy.
Useful questions:
Am I meeting a deeper awareness of my relationship with the fundamental drives in me?
Has a change occurred where I am starting the inner journey into who I am beyond the surface personality?
Have I recently felt a wider awareness of what I am?

I had a dream that whales were beaching themselves and I was helping them by digging in the sand to help bury them. I felt good about helping them. I was covering a whale with sand when I looked up and a massive wave came crashing and all of a sudden I was swimming in deep water. Someone was with me I think my cousin and I said but how do we know which way is north. The dream was dark and the sand was a dark grey. It was night time.
Helen – You were feeling that the great and beautiful life was dying or dead and you must bury it. But suddenly a massive and unexpected new life activity came upon you plunges you deep within yourself giving you new awareness of who you are.
It was night and you wondered which way was north – well you should look into the night sky and see the bright star and let it be your guide. So watch out for something new to come out of the darkness within you.

Wow thanks Tony. I’m going through a difficult time in my life and your feedback has really given me something to hold on to.
my dream wasn’t very long but i was in the ocean and i saw a whale eat an alligator and all of a sudden i was in the water and the whale was circling around me eating other things rubbing against me but never hurting me. ???
Kari – Please read the following as it saves a lot of explaining – http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/questions-2/#Summing
Everything in your dream is an expression in images of your feelings, fears and intuition. So the whale expressed a huge part of you that was under water or out of sight so part of what was unconscious. It is huge because in comparison you, your conscious self, is tiny. See http://dreamhawk.com/dream-dictionary/what-we-need-to-remember-about-us-3/#Reaction
But you are well on the way to discovering what many people are afraid of – their
larger self. The whale is an expression wonderful abilities that were natural and instinctive but we lost when we lost contact with our full instinctive range. See http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/esp-in-dreams/
Also it is okay to be swallowed by the whale as it is called the Night Journey; see http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/archetype-of-the-night-journey-the-search-for-self/

I will try to keep it simple and avoid too much detail.
Iv had many spiritually linked dreams. This one was a bit odd. Basically I was watching these 2 people driving in a car that could travel at the speed of light thru time… I ran into them on the road and asked for a ride. They said no. I watched as they drove and crash into a bridge over the ocean it was night and rainy. Their car fell into the ocean. Suddenly I was in the ocean ..I was in dark water and couldn’t see anything ..suddenly a dark shadow which I made out to be a giant tail of a whale..waved at me. It’s force pushed me down to somewhere deep in the ocean..I was suddenly at the entrance of a cave where 2 human like creatures with bald heads, a third eye and wearing orange robes like monks greeted me. They said they were waiting and had something to reveal to me…As I walked towards them I woke up….
I dreamt of a ruined enclosure with a loan whale, the water was gradually retreating with the whale stuck at the bottom despite there being alot of people seemingly trying to help but i could sense its destress and possibly distrust of these people.
I was then a fugtitive, in disguise working in the same place but i got discovered and had to go on the run. I felt very afraid and was hiding with my family with an overwhelming feeling of having to get away then i woke up.
Still picture it clear as if id just woken up, was very surreal.

I saw your website, interesting..I suffered a great loss when my 18 year old daughter was killed in a car accident December 17, 2010. The other night, I dreamed about an orca, but very odd. I got into my car and there was a miniature baby orka in a bag full of water. I didn’t know what to do with it at first, so I took it to the local aquarium because I felt that there they would know how to take care of it. I wonder now if this has something to do with my daugters death. Obviously after such a great loss, I still cannot believe that she is gone.
Melissa – Your dream doesn’t seem to be about your daughter’s death – but…
The tiny fish in a bag of water often refers to pregnancy, a new conception. If you know of any local aquariums – women, who are the natural place to keep the tiny life forms like fishes in a woman’s womb, keep an eye open. There is just a chance that your daughter is seeking a new life. So watch your dreams for developments. Also read http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/reincarnation-and-dreams/#ReinProof

I had a dream where I was with some friends. They were not my waken life friends but some strangers who were my close friends in the dream. We were at this area of the ocean where there were huge rocks and cliffs and we seemed to be the only ones there. We found out we could breathe underwater and found a small town under the water. There were killer whales and other humans who were shopping and cooking. Eventually one of the other human girls there was attracted to me and wanted to have sex. (I’m also open about being a bisexual female.) She had a rude and snotty attitude so I didn’t want her back. One of the killer whales also liked me and told me to get on her back as she swam away with me. I thanked her for getting me away from the snotty human girl, but she wasnt pleased with me just thanking her. She brought me into her whale home which was empty and tranformed into a creature that looked as a human girl, but still had the features of a killer whale. She then was able to speak to me and told me she’d like to mate. I didn’t feel any urges to return the favor for I also was not attracted to the whale girl. Somehow I had to go through with it, but when I got to the physical part the whale girl had the power to give me a penis. With the penis I had sex with her and tried my best to make her happy. She was pleased but had also fallen in love with me. I was trying to run away and get back to the surface of the water where she couldn’t reach me. I had help from my friends and even the snotty girl helped me. I eventually made it to safety and as a human on the shore, my friends and I went to a rock concert. Then I woke up. I’m very confused on what this could possibly mean.
i dreamt of a whale swimming in a small pond, as i looked into the water i see it is a huge galaxy underwater…what does this mean?
Kim – It is a simple but beautiful dream with a wonderful meaning.
Have you been meditating or doing anything to open up your inner world? See http://dreamhawk.com/inner-life/inner-world/
The dream shows you penetrating the usually hidden world within you. The small pond is you looking at what is happening deep within your mind and feelings; an aspect of yourself that is submerged in the sense of being unconsciousness.
In doing that you get a glimpse of what you are really like; what we are all like. For we are all born with the whole cosmos within us, but we are so limited because we usually feel that our body is us and the senses show us reality.
Please explore your dream because you have a whole universe to enter and discover.
Perhaps you have read about this before, because you cannot usually have a dream such as this without having travelled many steps on the path to discover your core. But please read http://dreamhawk.com/inner-life/jesse-watkins-experience-of-enlightenment/ – http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/what-we-need-to-remember-about-us-3/#DualBeing – http://dreamhawk.com/body-and-mind/the-next-step-criticisms/ – http://dreamhawk.com/body-and-mind/methods-of-awakening/ – http://dreamhawk.com/interesting-people/edgar-cayce-and-the-cosmic-mind-superminds/

I love your website, but I think you’re missing out on the whale imagery, which is a potent symbol of the ORIGINAL SELF. As Gillian Holloway points out in her book on dreams, “the whale …offers assurance that a huge force within you remains unscathed and is available as a resource from which to draw healing, strength, and sound judgment.” It often appears after a difficult period in your life and indicates you’re through it.
Kara – Thanks for your thoughts. I am still working through the whole online dictionary and am only up to the middle ff’s. But will eventually get there. But I thought, in a short entry, which most are if unrevised – “the beneficent power of the collective unconscious. Also the ability to dive deeply into ones unconscious life process and awareness – the Core Self – the beneficent power of the collective unconscious is about what you said. But have added ‘Core Self’ in case it is missed. But I have found again and again that meeting the unconscious is often far from being felt as healing and strengthening. See – http://dreamhawk.com/dream-dictionary/what-we-need-to-remember-about-us-3/#Reaction We need a strong ego to be able to access the hugeness we all are.

My whale dream was so powerful! In the beginning of my dream I was at someones house and felt the need to get away. There were some “bad” guys coming who I did not want to see. I left the house out of a back door, but was followed by one of the men. Eventually we were walking together, not speaking, but I was not feeling like I was being chased or in any danger. It was a very dark night.Soon we arrived at the beach. We had walked a short while, when a massive whale breached, he seemed to stay there out of water longer than normal, I noticed some other people on the beach, everyone just stopped and taking in the powerful presence of the whale. The man and I began to have sex, standing still watching the whale and after it was gone we just watched where the whale had been. It was like the whale had brought this intense feeling of power and that we must have sex now, with this new gained power…and almost in honor of the whale…
I dreamt that I saw an enormous fish (I think a whale) floating in the sky. I started filming it, as I didn’t think anyone would believe me that I’d seen it. Then a smaller creature started floating next to it. The whale seemed calm, but when the other creature appeared, I sensed that it was a bit distressed and realised that they didn’t really want to be up there and had been forced by strange aircurrents which were holding them in the air. The Whale moved underneath the other creature, which I now recognised as a seal, and allowed it to lie on it’s (the Whale’s) back. The seal looked exhausted and fell asleep on the Whale’s back. When they eventually came down to earth, I apporached the seal (which looked ill and tired) and it was looking at me with a really sad expression. I went to put my hand out to stroke it, but suddenley I felt too scared to do it.
If anyone has any ideas about what this might mean, I’d be grateful to hear them.
Dream
Dear Tony,
I had a dream earlier this week about a very big (killer I believe) whale. I googled dream interpretation and thus was brought to your post here. In my dream there were 3, or 4 people, (or upon waking, although different in nature, left the impression may have all been parts of myself). We were swimming in the ocean towards the shore riding waves pushing us in. When a big whale emerged from behind us in the water and the most valnerable, insecure one of us was scared struggling to keep away and was gobbled up by the whale. There were three left, they swam as fast as they could and in an instant one jumped up on a rock in the water from the side and threw fish in front of the whale to divert him to eat instead. It appeared to be working, while the others were almost to shore…then I woke up.
I have a deep feeling it is a significant dream, somehow dealing with self awareness and evolution. I was moved by the part in the dream of the one helping the others and by his/her quick, resouceful ingenious reaction of throughout fish. Also the face so vivid of the victim one so innocent and scared, yet remember white teeth, almost smiling? Tony, any additional insight, help in interpretation would be appreciated. Appreciatively, Leanne
I’ve seen a lot of information on dreams with animals or involving animals but not a lot on dreams where you BECOME the animal.
I dreamt that one night I asked a friend to drop me off somewhere and I’d tell her how to get there. Eventually we ended up at the beach. My friend was perplexed and asked what was going on.
That’s when I told her I wasn’t actually a human. I was a whale person. My people (the whales) wanted me to go live among the humans and learn about them. So I did. But now it was time to go back home.
My friend was disbelieving at first but then eventually sort of accepted it. We hugged and said goodbye and I started walking into the ocean.
A bit further out, I dove into the water and felt myself changing into a whale. Then I saw the other whales (my people) waiting for me. They asked about my experience and I said I’d tell them everything I learned about the humans but that I was really happy to be home.
And then we all started swimming off deeper into the ocean.
What does this mean?!
I had a dream last night of at least 5 or 6 gigantic, larger than life sized whales swimming n the ocean very near the shore! They were tremendous, powerful and I sensed that they were very aware, of the people at the shore and their own magnitude. I wanted to protect my sister from going in the water but I wasn’t afraid. What could this mean? I have been in communion with my spiritual nature and speaking to my loved ones who have passed on recently (mother, grandmother, papa, great grandmother and oddly, I’ve been feeling my great great grandmother around me, though she passed on long before I was born). Any insight greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Tigresstiff – You have some very beautiful dreams. I am sure that this means you are well on the way to wherever you destined to go, to flower. I know this by watching my own dreams for fifty years, and it is obvious to me that such dreams only come as you grow and mature inwardly.
That you share awareness with the whales tell me that you are dipping deeper and deeper into your core self, the universal ocean of awareness in which so much more is possible. Sometimes that may lead others to feel you are a bit different, but loved. That the whales are near the shore says the ability to sense the universal is getting nearer or more pronounced.
The feeling of protection for your sister – is she younger than you – is that you were looking after your own more vulnerable self.
As for your communications with your ancestors, I think you are well into understanding it. But have you tried asking them questions? It is an important part of communication, and you can then test your results against what you receive.
Tony
Thank you Tony. I have not spoken with my loved ones in dreams aside from one conversation I had with my grandmother in a recent dream. I told her I was going to write an international best seller and make millions and take care of our family. There was also another powerful dream in which she was giving me crumpled up hundred dollar bills. I have the sense that she was trying to tell me something in another that dream about which I would greatly welcome your feedback. As this dream did not include a whale, should I post on another page? Or email you? This dream was at a hospital. Thank you so much Tony.
Tigresstiff – Some dreams tend to exaggerate the action, but the money could be on its way – fingers crossed.
Please go to whale in the dream dictionary and post the dream there – I always am interested when I see another dream from someone I know. Or better still, put it on the Forum, it has a quicker turnover,
Tony
Tigresstiff – Did you post the dream to me? I haven’t some across it, and would be interested to see it.
Sent it to me at tonycrisp@yahoo.com
Bye – Tony
Hi Tony,
I just sent it to you. 🙂
Cheers 🙂
Tiffany
my dream was I was walking on a pier either at dawn or dusk. the pier was slotted boards not together. i saw 3 whales not full grown adults roll over to see me with their eyes, then swim tword me. i was on the cell describing this to sumone and i realized they were under the pier flooding waves of water on my feel so i bent down and could touch them with the phoen in my hand getting soaked all over but i was running after them on hands knees rubbing them and talking to them. then after im all wet ruined my phone … i woke up! dammit
Felica – I see that at times you feel life flooding through you in a sense of wonder.
Your dream is an expression of that and also an opening to great depths of feeling that you can recapture if you imagine and see such great beings coming to meet you. The whales are an expression of Life reaching out to you, coming into your awareness and communicating with you and you with it.
Was the ‘Dammit’ because of your phone or because they were gone? And the ruined phone was a message that your artificial means of communication with Life is finished.
Tony
