Rat

What you sense as sick or negative, so can depict your fears or anxieties, frightening instincts or urges, physical sickness or anxieties about health. Perhaps also feelings of sexual repulsion, or using sex to gain material aims. But this was caused by the fallacy that rats carried the plague and are unclean, but rats are very clean.

It was found out by historical research that it wasn’t the rat that brought the plague to Europe but the gerbil was the culprit. Sometimes a rat in your dream can remind you of love that was betrayed, or intuitions about a person being a ‘rat’ or ‘ratting on you’ – doing things behind your back or underhandedly – or deserting a relationship when difficulties arise.

The rats can point to threatening things going on that you are not clear about, or a view of the underhanded side of yourself or others – the evil side of human nature, its dirt and squalor, or time gnawing away at your life. The unacceptable parts or oneself. In some dreams the rat has the character of most rodents, the gnawing inquisitive searching out of things. It can therefore relate to one’s anxieties, self questioning and worrying mind that disturbs or eats away at things like peace of mind or confidence.

Because we may have associations with rats used in laboratories they may suggest healing and sacrifice.

Pet rat: Quite different to general rat associations; vulnerability, instinctive intelligence, the caring feelings or drive to care; responsibility for caring. The rat is an intelligent creature, is a great survivor and explorative.

In China where various types of rat are cooked and eaten, the astrological symbols are replaces by animal symbols. The rat (sometimes referred to as a mouse) is the first of the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac. People born in this year are expected to possess qualities associated with rats, including creativity, intelligence, honesty, generosity, ambition, a quick temper and wastefulness. People born in a year of the rat are said to get along well with “monkeys” and “dragons”, and to get along poorly with “horses”.

RatsInHinduTemple

Here the rats in this Hindu temple are venerated, and are being fed.

In Indian tradition, rats are seen as the vehicle of Ganesha the elephant god, and a rat’s statue is always found in a temple of Ganesh – the elephant god the remover of all obstacles. In the north western Indian city of Deshnoke, the rats at the Karni Mata Temple are held to be destined for reincarnation as Sadhus (Hindu holy men). Rats are eaten by some people in India also.

Idioms: Rat on someone; rat race; smell a rat; feeling ratty; cornered rat; rats leave a sinking ship.

I am 4 months pregnant with our 4th child and have had no excitement about it and a lot of anxiety. In my dream last night, I knew I was pregnant and was looking for my Mother ( who died in October, I am due at the end of October just after the 2 year anniversary of her death.) When I finally found a woman in this old weird, house, she was next to a giant rat (as large/larger than a full grown man) it was a dark almost black brown and she kept telling me the rat had Trisomy 14 (a chromisomal malformation that results in physical deformities and retardation). I already have 3 healthy children and have never worried about deformities or defects before. What the heck does this all mean?

    -Anna - Tony's Assistant 2015-05-01 12:13:24

Dear Jessa – Don’t be too worried by anxiety dreams about the baby. Virtually all women have them. Only get worried if they persist. An ultrasound exam can quickly see if you are anxious or intuitive, because the disorder Trisomy 14 may be characterized by growth delays before birth too.
There is a symbol in your dream which makes me believe that this has nothing to do with your physical baby though and merely with your own mind; the old, weird house.
When you dream of a house, you are meeting a hugely important and many sided representation of yourself. It is both many faceted and multidimensional.
Although you cannot see it, your mind, along with your beliefs, has a particular structure or form. If the shape of your mind could be built into a three dimensional model, such as a house, you would probably be able to see that your mind has as unique a shape as your fingerprints.
The giant rat I see as a symbol of your fears that have become too big for you to handle and has grown to giant proportions.
The message of the (unknown?) woman as I “hear” it, is that your fears are disabling you and so it is time to look at them in a constructive way.

Another way of expressing this disorder (in your mind) is “Trisomy 14 MOSAIC”. A mosaic is a symbol of our life, its pattern and what we manifest by it through the many separate acts and events; our view of life when we put all the pieces of experience together.
We are in fact a form of mosaic that is formed by many different things. We do not exist outside them, and they are mysterious in their action upon us. For example our time of birth and the historical, political and social influences are part of who we are. The culture we were raised and the language we learnt also are tremendous parts of our mosaic. Our DNA has another effect upon the physical and potentials we inherit from our parents. But each of us are unique, every being is unique and create their particular pattern. And that pattern calls out of the infinite possibilities something different. So in this sense there are as many faces of the highest in us as there are human beings.

You are looking for your mother in your dream and I wonder if you feel this 4th pregnancy is different because she is not a part of your waking life anymore? Did you get a lot of support from her when she was still alive? Another possibility is that fears were a large part of your mother’s “DNA” and now that she is not a part of your waking life anymore, you are “asked” to deal with this part of your inner mother.
Many people do not realise that they have an inner mother equally as powerful as an external mother. You have taken in millions of bit of memory, lessons learnt, life experiences along with all the feelings or problems met by loving and living with your mother, and they are what makes you the person you are. This is true even if your mother was never there for you – you still have all the memories of her not being there for you filed under ‘Mother’. The memories and experience we gather unconsciously change us and are not lost. It is part of you and is symbolised in dreams as a person or event. Such an inner mother can appear in dreams because you are still deeply influenced by what you hold within you.

Perhaps learning to communicate with your unborn child can assist you on your (inner) path too?

I dreamt that a rat was chasing me and my dog around a familiar home, eventually the rat bit my hand and the blood was gushing out of it. I called my mom & boyfriend for help on the phone but no one offered me help. The rat ran away after it but me.,

My most recent dream was… all over the place, to say the least. But to make a long story short, at the end of the dream, I was sitting up in a bed, it was during the day because the sun shone bright through a window just behind me. For some reason, I looked down and saw a group of cute, young rats. They were pets, this I know because they were dressed up and were being fed treats. But they weren’t my pets. I remember some were all white and some were black and white. Then two unfamiliar children came to the door, one carrying treats for the baby rats and the other carrying a blue adult rat. As they fed the babies more treats, I stood from the bed and started down the hall where the two strange children had just come from. I exited a door and it was then that I noticed the snake that I was carrying. A green snake smiled up at me as I took a seat on the porch fence. I can’t remember what the snake was saying, but I remember that it was friendly and I wasn’t afraid of it at all. I lowered the snake onto the porch where there were more rats and the snake was just about to eat one when I grabbed it by the tail and started pulling it away. Just as I was placing it back in my hand a cat appeared, hissing fiercely at us. The snake was afraid, but while the sudden appearance of the cat surprised me, I wasn’t afraid of it. Then I stood to walk away and that’s when I woke up. I don’t understand what any of this means. Any ideas?

I had a dream that I was in a room and I was carrying a crate full of rats once I realize what I was carrying I immediately put the crate on top of a dresser and one of the rats were trying to get out as my girlfriend came in the house I immediately screamed and said hey we have rats in the house and then one of the rats jumped out and I ran away and was very scared

    -Anna 2015-04-14 7:30:58

Dear Anina – In our life we carry about with us the sum total of all we think and feel – the burden of being who we are, so what you are carrying in the dream is important to understand.
Running away from “your rats” is a symbol for not meeting problems in a way that will resolve them.
Please try to understand that these rats are merely a symbol for what you have created in your inner world. They depict your fears or anxieties, frightening instincts or urges, physical sickness or anxieties about health. Perhaps also feelings of sexual repulsion or using sex to gain material aims.
If you watch yourself you will notice that whatever you think about you have a feeling reaction to. Obviously it is noticeable in regard to frightening dream images. And dreams are only your feeling reactions put into images and drama.
To feel fear in a dream means that you have not yet developed abilities to cope with what is symbolised as causing the fear. One of the wonderful things about dreams if you work with them, is that they gradually show you how to deal with the parts of your nature that need to grow or to be healed. They show how to meet the parts of yourself that need release, or to be understood or healed. If it takes courage to meet these buried or painful parts of yourself, then your dreams will gradually take you on a journey that helps you to unfold your resources of courage. You will be enabled to face your fears, and in fact gain power and instruction from them.
A start to work with your dream is to ask yourself what feelings are so much a part of me that I constantly carry them around? If this is difficult to answer ask the girlfriend who came into the house in your dream, for often other people are more aware of what we still (try to) hide for ourselves.
Another question is: What can I learn about myself from this?

    Good Luck!

I had a dream with just one rat. The color was gray and i was able to see the rat wiskers and its cute ears. Not sure if i was laying down or sitting but the rat was to a distance near my face where i believe it was on top of something where the rat was able to stare at me look at me kinda like curious and with his two feet up smelling me.. That rat didnt look harmful at all just curious, but in my mind a thought came a crossed of knowing that in real life i am afraid of rats… , but i was not afraid in my dream i just looked at it and moved my face back but no fear was felt with in me. As soon as i woke up that was my reaction my head moved back but didnt wake up scared nor with a smile.. Just wondering what that meant.. I tried to analize my dream by walking back the place i was in had some clarity… I was able to see the rat and the color.. Able to see the wiskers and the two front feet.. The rat was not dirty at all and the ears was shaped cute enought to feel not afaird of it.. The body language of this rat was just curious like analizing me. Thats as much as i can think of nd recap of my dream???

I dreamt that I was with a relative who resides abroad (so I don’t see her often), and was being introduced to her place of work. She introduced me to a room where they kept pets amongst them a ‘playful rat’ who wanted to play at all costs. This rat clung onto my hair and I had to shake it off since I am terrified of any type of rodents. What is the meaning of this?

-Anna 2015-03-12 12:45:41

Rowanne- this dream needs your personal associations with the symbol of the rat. See http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/association-of-ideas-with-dreams/#Working
Or you could try “being the rat” in order to find out what is hiding under your bed. See http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/acting-on-your-dream/#BeingPerson
The dream could be related to feelings of fear about your relationship.

Hi i just had a dream of finding a rat in my room amongst my clothes, i went to investigate and a black/grey rat runs under my bed. I scream and call for my brother (who I live with) but it comes out as a whisper as i realise its not real but im dreaming. I am going through some difficulties in my current relationship. Could my dream be something related to that?

I was in an empty portion of a house – the walls werent painted, the photo frames were placed in a way so that they faced the walls and I couldnt see the pictures. I saw a heap of discarded magazines on the floor, they were the kind my aunt reads. I saw one which was unexpectedly a manga… and at that moment a saw a white mouse in the heap and I guess I ran to the next room (the kitchen). There was a chair with piles of books on it blocking the way and I saw a rat – one that had like three or four pairs of paws…I thought it would leave like the mouse did, but it was coming towards me. I kept on thinking about getting out of the place but I couldnt since the rat and the chair was blocking my way.
I kept on trying by throwing something at it but it kept on getting back.

I have this recurring dream, I’m back in my old room at my parents house (not sure why I’m staying there again) and when I lay down in my bed I hear noises in the walls. Then gray rats start pouring into the room out of the walls and the closet. They always try to jump on the bed and up until last night they didn’t succeed. Last night one of them was very aggressively trying to get at me and when I tried to swat it away it bit my wrist and wouldn’t let go. I had to break it’s neck to get it loose. Then my arm (the one that was bit) developed this horrible blistery rash. My mom and dad never help me in this dream, and my husband is never with me, he’s always at work or sometimes downstairs with my parents while this is happening. Any ideas what this could mean? Please help.

-Ashlie 2015-01-22 21:20:57

I had a dream where there was a large talking rat. It ran around the kitchen and then into the living room. My fiance caught it and threw it out of the door. What does this mean?!?

-Del 2014-12-15 22:16:20

I had a dream about a big rat it was half white and half brown. In my dream I think it was my pet it was walking on my arms then my neck then chest then i grabbed it with both my hands. I’ve never had a pet rat. I wasn’t scared of it in my dream I was playing with it. When I was little we had a pet rabbit that was half white and half brown. But ithe wasn’t a rabbit I dreamt of it was a rat.

I have had 3 dreams so far about rats in the last 5 years. I always wake up screaming. The first was I was about to get in the shower and about 20 rats jump on me and they’re all over the bathtub and I wake up screaming, this was about 4 years ago. 2 months ago I had a dream where I was walking up the stairs and rats start chasing me, I wake up shaking, trying to run away and screaming. Last dream occurred 2 nights ago, I was trying to get out of the basement through a small door and a rat keeps trying to attack me I keep scarring her off but she comes at me feet and that is when I get out and I wake up screaming. I have never seen a rat in person so I’m not sure if I have a fear of rats. I just find it odd how I wake up screaming every single time.

Omg sorry, I’m meant to say , it scared me so I ran into my room leaving my dad outside with a gun, I heard them wrestling, than I heard what sounded to be my dad’s gun going off , I tried to call the cops , but by the time I pressed the call button I had woken up.

    -Mika 2014-11-28 13:36:00

    Hi Breena,

I have to start off by saying that I am no professional dream interpreter. I do have the ability to forsee events and even insights into my life and others through dreams, and have done so for my entire life since I was a child.

    41 to me represents separation.

This dream of yours sounds like an issue may occur within your group of friends that may leave you feeling guilty. What were you feeling when you saw the man murdering your friends? Shock? Guilt? Fear? Anger? This could all tie into the situation.

Thankfully, it sounds like you have a very strong foundation and refugee with your parents/family. There is no need to call another source of help… Trust that their love & protection is strong enough to save you ^_^

I hope this helps & I hope that no matter what you face in life with your friends you always find relief. Take care xo
