Hair
Mostly hair in dreams links with the way you are thinking, your self image and attitudes. In some dreams it can link with sexual attraction or even what sexual characteristics you are displaying. Therefore changing the style of your hair would show you changing the way you see yourself, or how you want others to see you.
We sometimes use our hair and the way we style it to show what group or social group we identify with. So a hair style could link with a social group or status – business; hippie; middle class; smart and motivated; laid back; Goff’s; punk; artistic etc.
Example: I was watching a man do a stage act. It started with him looking directly toward me and gradually taking on the character of a hippie person. His hair was in a pony tail at the back and he became less well groomed. Then he shook his hair loose from the pony tail and went through amazing changes in which the whole styling and colour of his hair altered and changed the way he looked, and even his sex. For instance his hair became shoulder length, red, beautifully styled in a full waved perm of shining hair. As this he was a beautiful female. At another moment he turned profile and the hair styled backwards into a mane of wavy hair. T.C.
This dream shows how the hair depicts character and mental attitude, even gender. See: washing hair.
Baldness: Ageing; feeling obsolete; lack of thought; maleness.
Beard: This depends on the age of the person and the situation in the dream. For instance stubble on a teenage boy suggests he is moving into manhood. But a beard can also suggest carelessness – as when someone hasn’t shaved; a mask if someone uses it to hide their youth; or a way of life that does not conform, or like a backwoodsman. Sometimes the link is with a war veteran, suggesting a long exposure to conflict and extreme living conditions.
Black wig: This wig suggests the false thinking, the unconscious false thoughts, still prevalent and to be dealt with.
Brushing hair: Clarifying or bringing order to attitudes or thoughts. Getting rid of emotional or relationship tangles or tangled ideas.
Changing hair style: Changing the way you see yourself, your self image. Perhaps also changing attitudes and a change of mind.
Chest hair: Masculinity, virility. If it is on a woman, it suggests her expressing masculine qualities.
Colour of hair: In everyday life we unconsciously gather a lot of information from someone’s hair colour. For instance racial background is one immediate thing we see. But hair colour might well link with someone we know – our father, or mother, or someone close to us. If that is not the link it can suggest attitudes – light-headed for instance; dark thoughts; fiery temperament with red hair, or age and perhaps wisdom with grey or silver hair.
If the hair is artificially coloured this shows the person or yourself trying to be something you are not at your ‘roots’. But this might also show an attempt to stand out, to be different to those around you to gain attention or change your self image.
Combing hair: See: comb.
Cutting off beard: Making a change; feeling more certain about your manhood; or uncertainty about manhood, depending on dream. It can also suggest a fuller meeting or self expression, and uncovering of who you are. In some cultures it might suggest leaving behind traditional religious beliefs.
Cutting hair: It can be about a change taking place in you – it cold be to smarten yourself up, or to have a real personal change. Cutting hair or a hand or some other part of the body may be about an initiation into another type of life. In traditional initiation rites and a boy’s or girl’s initiation to manhood or womanhood the cutting of hair, was symbolic of growth beyond childhood and a taking on of mature life. See Long Hair
Cutting hair right off: This depends on what hair is cut off. If it is wild and unkempt, then it would show a real change and a more disciplined way of thinking and acting. If the hair style suggested some sort of social, religious or cult affiliation, then it would show a move away from that. In general it shows cutting back on what you think or dream, like clearing out a cupboard of all the things no longer needed. It can also show denial of sensual, sexual and physical drives, as with a monk, or acceptance of age or baldness.
Dark hair: The thoughts and ideas that move you yet are largely unconscious. Might show ‘dark’ thoughts or attitudes. But it can also suggest racial dispositions, such as Latin passions or responses, or the black cultural way of being. As mentioned above, it can also link with someone you know.
Disheveled hair Mental confusion, personal carelessness about how you appear to others. It might also be an indication that you are ruled by crazy thoughts and ideas.
Fair hair: Awareness; ‘light headed’. Might link with racial types such as Scandinavian stock, or indicate a coolheaded person. Being blonde is also for many women and men a statement of wanting to be attractive, or wanting to attract attention and not be one of the crowd.
Genital or armpit: Sexuality. Your natural or instinctive feelings and drives. See: pubic hair below.
Hair on chest or body of female, even child: The male side of the woman; might be parents desire for a boy generated male characteristics. It could also be a sign of something unusual breaking through, something that you didn’t expect growing into your life. See archetype of the animus
Hair in mouth: Hair in ones mouth is a cause of tremendous irritation or discomfort. So may be something that is very disturbing or difficult to speak about. Also the mouth is associated with eating and speaking.
You would want to get rid of the hair and irritation as soon as possible. So it may be something you are saying that is so wrong it makes you feel irritated. But hair can also represent your thoughts, so maybe it is something you are thinking and not words.
But the way you can find out for yourself is to imagine yourself in the dream and explore the feeling with the idea – what does this mean. You could use Being the Person or Thing
Long matted: Not caring about social image or self; drop out.
Long hair: Freedom; permissiveness; girlhood with woman.
Plaited or pony tail: Girlhood; socialised or disciplined thoughts and feelings.
Pubic hair: Some dreams mentioning pubic hair do so in a way that suggests it as a glimpse of what lies beneath – or at least a glimpse of whatever pleasure or emotions, perhaps even fear or pain, are generated by the experience of or thoughts/fantasies of sex. When the pubic hair is missing it is about the revealing of the sex or gender. Of course, today, the appearance or absence of hair could refer to the latest fashions in sexual display.
Another possibility of the lack of pubic hair is that your sexual feelings, needs and power are being made conscious, or are brought to awareness.
In connection with teenagers it shows the emergence of their sexual life and all that will bring.
Short hair: If it was long it shows a radical change in the way you see yoruself, perhaps more busines like or less feminine. It can also show that you are maturing beyond the girlhood or boyhood stage. Your present age has nothing to do with the change. See Ages of Love
Tight style: Discipline; self restraint.
Very long beard: Sense of eternal or long life.
Washing hair: Changing ones attitude; altering the way one thinks about something or ones viewpoint. “Wash that man right out of my hair” mind/feelings.
White beard: Wisdom or experience gained through long life, and perhaps an awareness of life beyond the senses.
Wig: False attitudes or thoughts; an assumed social front.
Woman’s dreams – Armpit or leg hair: Social expression of sexuality or physicality.
Idioms: harebrained; hair of the dog; get in your hair; got you by the short hairs; keep your hair on; hair raising; have us by the short hairs; let one’s hair down; make you hair curl/stand on end; didn’t turn a hair; pulling hair out; put hairs on your chest; tear one’s hair out; split hairs, without turning a hair. See: shampoo.

I dreamed that i was eating my hair together with my family and a male classmate of mine. But I’m not sure what my family is eating but my classmate eats my hair as well.
Sophie – Eating means you are taking something new into you in a very intimate way. Also you are digesting it so making it part of you – thus the use of the word intimate.
Hair is about what you think or even your self image. So eating your hair could mean that you are sharing yourself, your thoughts, with the classmate. It could mean that if it carries on the relationship with the classmate could also be intimate.

I had a dream that my hair is so shiny, bouncy, and very beautiful. And when I touched it in myy dream, it is really smooth. My hair in my dream is opposite to my hair in real life. I got split- ends, dry hair but I got smooth hair. And when I woke up, it looks like I want my hair to be like that in my dream.
Crissa – Your dream was showing you your hair as it is in nature, when you eat nature’s foods. But nearly all of us lack vitamin B and C because most of our foods are adulterated by being produced in factories.
I suggest taking a really good vitamin and mineral supplement every day and see your hair recover. Also start eating only whole grains such whole-wheat bread, whole rice (brown rice) and other natural foods. I know the huge drug companies are saying we do not need supplements, but having advised people to supplement their diet I have seen wonderful results – one woman whose hair became glorious.

Julia – Your dream certainly is about you feeling as if you are changing – changing in a way that you are not pleased with.
That your dreams have changed so much suggests you are in a totally different environment. Each house has its own feelings, filled with the attitudes and emotions of the people who live there. Maybe it is that. You obviously feel uncertain in your dream about your attractiveness, and that suggests there are influences at work to undermine your sense of wellbeing. Your waking up with so much stress and your heat beating also suggests a cause for such a struggle.
I think you need to talk with someone you could explore this with. Not doctor as they would only prescribe medicines; someone who knows how to listen so you can say what you are feeling.

Greetings! I dream that my hairdresser Mother was sitting in a house [ with me sitting besides her] she was looking out of a large picture window , she was talkative, and laughing. When she saw her daughter she got excited and stood to greet her, I noticed when she stood up her hair was a pretty shiny silver gray in the front and the back of her hair [a small portion] was jet black?
SORRY I FIXED THE TYPOS

Hi,
I had a dream last night that I was talking to 4 Native Americans about hair cutting. There were 3 men and 1 woman. They were speaking in a language I didn’t understand at first. The woman started speaking to me. I asked her what tribe they were from and she told me (although when I awoke I couldn’t remember the name). She went on to tell me that their tribe was part of my ancestry.
The tallest of the men began asking me if he could cut my hair. I was a little stunned by the question and said no. He went on to explain that he didn’t want to cut all of it off, but just to trim the ends. He said that cutting or trimming it would be a new beginning for me, almost like starting over in my life. I told him that I was going to do it when I got home.
I know that this dream may have many interpretations and meanings.
Any thoughts on what it might mean?
Thanks
Robyn – It sounds like a very important dream for you. It shows that you are digging deeper into yourself and discovering a link with a different way of seeing the world. Maybe it could as the woman said that you have ancestry from the Native American Tribe, but it could also be that you have taken some of their philosophy into yourself. In the end it doesn’t matter because within us, if we open up, we have all cultures within us.
And in the dream you are offered an initiation into the tribe. Cutting the hair can mean that you are accepted as a woman. That is a proud thing to be. It would be a new beginning.
Tony
Hi Tony,
The last couple of nights I had dreams about beautiful red hair (not cherry red, but auburn-orange).
In the first dream a beautiful lady with medium length red, shiny hair perfectly combed and set like a pin up of the 50’s was present like a goddess and told me the name of the Yoga Retreat Center I am going to build this year which is different than the name I had given it.
The second night I was at a hair salon getting my hair done. It was very long and straight, very shiny and healthy with the same red colored highlights. I was very happy sitting in the chair getting my hair done. There were different hairdressers one of which is a real hairdresser I know and the other one is a doctor I work with, with whom I have some inner conflict in regards to my professional relationship. Also present was my ex-husband although his presence didn’t disturb me. It was clear that the salon which was an apartment, belonged to my current boyfriend and I. There were lots of people in this hair salon! At the end of the dream I hugged one of my female students who was present and who is a spiritual sister to me. It was an amazingly beautiful strong hug and I said to her, “I love you sister.”
That’s it. I thank you for any insight you might be able to give me.
Keren
Keren – I looked at the website – is that the one you are going to start?
Your dream seems to be a contact with the intuitive side of you, your wider awareness. I would think seriously about changing the name to the one she/the goddess suggested. I have met several instances of things like this that have really connected with our outer life. But how is it on your site you mention the physical side of yoga and not the main aim? The postures were originally used to train the body to be able to sit still for three hours. Then awareness would expand, with training to achieve Samadhi.
The second dream is about another aspect of you – your appearance. The hair salon is about how you can change the way you appear to others. The highlight of the dream is the hug with “a spiritual sister”.
I n the world of dreams our most intimate fears and longings are given an exterior life of their own in the form of the people, objects and places of our dream. Therefore our sexual drive may be shown as a person and how we relate to them; or given shape and colour as an object; or given mood as a scene, something that haunts our memory shown as a ghost or demon. Our feeling of ambition might thus be portrayed as a business person in our dream – our changing emotions as the sea or a river; while the present relationship we have with our ambition or emotions is expressed in the events or plot of the dream. Even dreams of God or angels are in a sense a meeting with your highest.
So the woman you hugged represents some part of you that you have a lot of flow with. I suggest you read http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/characters-or-people-in-dreams/

Hi Tony,
Thank you for your kind reply.
You are correct, the yoga website is not an accurate representation. In fact, my initial desire was to call my future Yoga Center “Samadhi” as my classes are known to be spiritually based and meditative in nature. The name I received in the dream is very basic, “Yoga Creative Center” whereas I had chosen, “Tra Cielo e Terra Studio di Yoga” (Between heaven and earth in italian). However, I trust that Spirit has chosen this name for a reason and will go ahead with it 🙂
I took a look at the page your recommended on characters and found it very informative! I love your insight on dreams. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Namastè and many blessings for a happy 2012! Keren
Thank you too Keren.
I like both the names, but I guess Spirit knows best. When we were trying to sell our house my first wife, Brenda, has a dream, we had advertised nationally without any results. In the dream she was told that if we put a sign in the window the first person passing would buy the house. So I put a notice in the window and that evening a couple came to the door – and they subsequently bought the house.
I hope to hear how you get on.
Tony
Hi Tony,
Thanks for sharing that story it’s quite amazing! I would be happy to keep you informed about the developments. I feel I understand my dream better now.Thank you again!
Keren
Hi.
Last night, I had a very mundane dream… But id still like to gather some meaning behind it.
I was standing in front of my bathroom sink looking into the mirror, when I pulled my shirt sleeves up and looked at my armpits. There were some short hairs there.
I grabbed a razor, wet it, and then shaved my armpits.
What’s up with this boring dream?
Thanks,
Rachel.
Rachel – Any looking in a mirror at yourself is about your self image; especially how you feel about yourself. So maybe the dream is saying that you are over concerned with how others would see you or feel about you.
Tony
I wish to extend my deepest thanks for this great work which you have compiled, Tony. I have used your website resource many times. Blessings Be on you and yours.
Colleen – I feel such connection with you as I read your story. And thank you for what you said about the website.
I would love to contribute some of my own story. I was fortunate to be born with a stubborn nature that managed to escape a lot, but not all, the restrictions placed upon us by other minds.
Tony
I had a dream last night that a co-worker was very drunk and I stopped him from having sex with a girl I know from my past who was trying to seduce him. Then, he told me had a problem getting sexually aroused and asked if I wanted to “help him.” We then went into a bathtub and began to make out while we were barely covered by plastic curtains and two friends could see us. He took off my shirt and then promptly left me in the bathtub and I thought I overheard him say something negative about my body to his friends. Then, I realized making out with him had left pubic hair in my mouth. I began pulling the pubic hair from my mouth and throwing it on the ground. I could really feel the texture of it on my tongue and there was a lot of it.
What does this dream mean?
Thanks,
Natalie
Tony, I had a dream last night that I was diving into a pool when the water was struck buy lightening and I was paralyzed. When I came out of the water, I started brushing my hair and chunks started coming out. Not from the roots, just in random jagged places. I was really disturbed by this dream, what does it mean??
Charlotte – Diving into your inner world of feelings was a trigger for a massive release of psychic energy – mental and emotional energy. It feels to me as if entering that world was what caused it. Have you started meditating or hit a new level of realisation?
Paralysis often is part of such a release and change – because it is about change, sudden change, and that leaves you wondering where you are. And you hair is about the change in the way you see yourself. But is a temporary change as you settle into the new you that is emerging. It will take a while for you to recognise the changes as it usually doesn’t surface straight away.
Tony
I currently have dreadlocks…i had a dream that everytime I would go to scratch my head a lock of my hair would fall out, I was mordified and trying to show people what happened but they didnt hear me or just didnt care.
Jermaine – Hello again.
Maybe I am crazy, but I have a feeling that you are proud of your dreadlocks, they mean something to you. And I believe your dream might be saying that it would be good to let go of your feelings connected with your dreadlocks.
But other than that falling hair can show that you feel your good appearance to others is being lost. It can be a loss of confidence about how you appear to others. In your dream nobody noticed, perhaps saying you are taking it to hard.
Tony
I has a dream last night that someone I didn’t like grabbed my hair and tried to cut it off with scissors but I managed to break free. What does this means? Thanks Marie
Marie – As your hair in dreams usually links with the way you are thinking, your self image and attitudes; or even your sexual attraction or even what sexual characteristics you are displaying, it sounds as if someone is jealous of you. They are trying to control the way you think or your appearance.
However, your breaking free showed you strong enough to shape of their criticism or influence.
