Drowning

This is such a common dream and has been answered hundreds of times, we first ask you to look through the many answers given in Drowning – Many Replies Hopefully you will find an answer to your own drowning dream

Because of the water, drowning depicts fear of being overwhelmed by difficult emotions or anxieties, so it often points to struggles – conflicts – or fighting for survival you may have in your life. But this might apply not to dangerous emotions or urges, but to natural urges such as eating, loving or sex, that some people have enormous conflicts with. Drowning in a dream is also about struggling to survive as a person, so it applies to your identity as it is dealing with relationship with other people, but also with your own internal world of instincts, body activities and needs.

But the feelings of being overwhelmed can be caused by fear or anxiety. But if we can, we can meet and dissolve these. For whenever we dream its images are not like real life, because a dream is nothing like outer life where things could hurt you, but is an image like on a cinema screen that even if a gun is pointed at you and fired it can do no damage – except if you run in fear. So all the things that scare you are simply your own fears projected onto the screen of your sleeping mind.

So in dreams you cannot drown, but fear takes away your confidence, so then you go through the agonised emotions of drowning.

This is about being or feeling overwhelmed by something. One can ‘drown’ in sorrow for instance. So you need to look at your waking life to see what you are feeling threatened or burdened by and see if there are ways you can deal with it. If someone else actually drowns in the dream it may mean some of your feelings, your creativity and responsiveness are no longer ‘alive’. But they can be brought back to life if you care for that side of yourself. Sometimes it is simply anxiety we drown in, and much of anxiety is about situations we imagine. Separating what is imagined from what is real can help this. See Characters and People in Dreams

But such fear can be caused because if un-dealt with traumas from childhood are not faced, or by being exposed to awful film images that you believe are real. Read  and Martial Art of the Mind

If you feel you are struggling to you ‘keep your head above water’ in a dream, do not give in for it is only emotions you are facing, not reality.

Water and drowning often indicates you are facing the unknown changes and so are afraid. But in dreams we can never die or even be hurt, for we wake without real hurt except for our feelings.

Going under water in a dream depicts you are going deeper into your awareness, so you are beginning to explore your unconscious. That is a major step in your development and is an evolutionary advance. It can lead to many major new abilities such as a wider awareness of life around you. A person describes one of the possible changes, “Unexpectedly everything changed and my fundamental self was something that existed throughout all time. It didn’t have a beginning or end. There was no goal to achieve. I am.”

Dreamt about someone else: May occasionally show Your apprehension about their health or well being, having the suggestion of death or breakdown.

Example: ‘I fell into a pond. My brother was frightened to be by himself so he jumped in. We were both drowning in the water and we shouted out for Mum. My brother drowned.’ Poppy S.

Poppy dreamt this while feeling insecure and anxious due to her father being seriously ill.

Example: I had been dreaming about sitting on a sofa with my friends – well watching horror movies, when suddenly everything comes to live. I was afraid of the ghost that had been drowning with her husband in the movie, and it comes to haunt me. I asked the ghost’s sister to help and she passes me a necklace with can protect me. And suddenly the ghost appears and tells my friend she was pretty. What does this means?

It means that you need to understand how your mind works. It means that you have nothing to fear about ghosts. As the ghost that appeared showed you, there was no harm in it. Dream images are like images on cinema screens – harmless unless you are haunted by your own fears. But the dream also shows you that whatever you believe in becomes a fact and alive in our dreams. It mean that the necklace gave you confidence, and in fact the necklace is only a crutch for your confidence. But we need such things until we can deal with our own emotions. See Facing Fear

Idioms: drown your sorrow; if you’re born to hang, you won’t drown.

Useful questions:

What powerful emotions or changes am I dealing with?

Am I feeling overwhelmed by something?

Can I define the strengths and ways I use to deal with threatening feelings?

Do I feel as if I am ‘drowning’ in a situation or relationship?

What is it I am feeling overwhelmed by recently?

Is this someone else drowning – if so what facet of me do they represent?

What resource or person could help me survive in this situation?

Another person or animal drowning still suggests it is an aspect of your own personality you need to care for.

Whoever or whatever it is, imagine yourself back in the dream and save them. If necessary imagine rescue services coming to your aid. In doing this you are using imagery to shift your feelings and anxieties.

All water in some way signifies your own inner world of feelings, but the sea often suggests meeting urges and wisdom lying beyond the boundary of your conscious mind. What is it you feel in the sea or river? Try putting it into words.

I had a dream last night that my family and my 3 year old son were at a hotel/resort type place and we were inside and then all of a sudden couldnt find my son. We ran outside and I saw him floating face down in a pool, seemingly dead. I was too far away to save him and I want to say someone pulled him out and maybe saved him but I was too overwhelmed with grief that I couldn’t do anything. Then I woke up shaking and in tears. My ex husband and I are currently in a nasty custody battle and my son is with him for a whole week. This terrifies me because sometimes things in my dreams come true. Could you please help give me some insight into this? Thank you!

Dear Jen – Every image and person in your dreams is an expression of your own life process. As such it is alive and intelligent and is something sent to help you. A dream is like a projection from a movie projector, except that you are the projector.

Everything you see as outside you is coming from you, your emotions, your fears, your beliefs, your joys and explorations and are all you, clothed in the dream images and drama.
I understand that this is a difficult time for you and the way I see your dream is that it is helping you to digest and release part of the difficult experiences that you go through.
Your son in your dream can be a symbol of your overwhelming feelings of sorrow because of the nasty custody battle you are involved in but also a symbol of the possible negative effect this battle can have on his emotional wellbeing.
So perhaps you can explore if you put the child first?
    See also https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v60B3PaYetk
You wrote “I was too far away to save him” and I feel it will be helpful to explore these feelings.
In the video the judge perceives it this way: “In a sense, there is a form of neglect,” Gordon says in the video “Because parents who are fighting are not capable of emotionally caring for their children.”
There is however a part of you in the dream that does save your child: “someone pulled him out and maybe saved him” and it will be helpful to explore that part too.
So use “Being the person” and “Talking as the person” for every character in your dream; for your own dream figure, for your son, for “someone” who pulled your son out etc.

Hiya I had a dream last night where I was with my daughter at a local swimming pool which has a wave machine. The wave machine was powerful & everyone was struggling, it pulled only my daughter under and pulled her to the bottom, I managed to pull her up she was blue and looked lifeless but was still alive. I’d really be grateful if anyone had any insight as it scared me and left me feeling emotional

-Jo 2015-06-25 8:43:07

Hi. I don’t have kids but two nights ago I dreamed I was at a waterpark with a little boy of about 18 months. We were walking up the steps to the top of the slide when he slipped and fell down into the pool maybe 30-40ft below. I’m scared of deep water so couldn’t jump in to save him and I was trying to scream to attract the lifeguard’s attention but no sound would come out.

Then last night I dreamed I was on a log flume ride at a theme park and saw a baby floating face-down in the water. I caught him by the arm and pulled him into the boat, and he told me he’d been floating there for four days and nobody else had noticed. I told his family they didn’t deserve him and took him away to care for him myself.

If you can give any insight on these dreams I’d be really grateful as I’m finding them very distressing and keep having flashbacks even when I’m awake! Thanks.

Dear Jo – Every image and person in your dreams is an expression of your own life process. As such it is alive and intelligent and is something sent to help you. A dream is like a projection from a movie projector, except that you are the projector.
Everything you see as outside you is coming from you, your emotions, your fears, your beliefs, your joys and explorations and are all you, clothed in the dream images and drama.
Being at a theme park is a symbol for the playful or childlike exploration of experience and sometimes difficult emotions or anxieties can be part of that experience too.
You wrote that you don’t have kids; well not in waking life, but in the dream world this is your inner son and he felt neglected by you.
Our inner child is likely to respond the way your dream son did – like a victim – and judging “his family” is not helpful for in the contexts of these two dreams you are merely judging your own fear to jump into the deep water and save him.
    See also http://dreamhawk.com/news/avoiding-being-my-own-victim/
Fear is not something to judge, and mainly something to become aware of and look at as an observer, so you do not have to end up in the vicious circle of judging and blaming different parts of yourself.
    See also http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/autonomous-complex/
    and
    http://dreamhawk.com/health-and-healing/inner-baby-and-child/
Observing your own ebb and flow of thoughts and feelings, your own habits and responses to things, is one of the most powerful of tools to use in transforming your life. This also leads to a fuller connection with your intuitive connection with your core.
If one uses observation you may at time realise that you are cycling through feelings or moods. So it can imply that one is experiencing a cycle which you may be trapped in. The way to get out of this cycle is to step back from it using observation; this is like stepping back and not be lost in the emotions or moods.
Much of our behaviour is largely or wholly unconscious. Becoming aware of something can by itself produce a change. If you are not aware of how you act or respond, there is less likelihood of satisfying change.
    See http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/self-observation/
I feel it will be helpful if you explore these two dreams again using Power Dreaming and I trust that the flashbacks will disappear with this approach too.
So while awake and relaxed imagine yourself back in the dream and continue it as fantasy or a daydream and move it toward satisfaction. Alter the dream in any way; experiment with it; play with it, until you find a way to fully feel at ease with it. In doing this you must not ignore the feelings of resistance and spontaneous emotion and fantasy that may occur. Satisfaction comes only when you have found a way of integrating these into your conscious imagining.

    Good Luck!

I dreamt last night that there was a big barn behind our house with an underground pool. We let our kids have friends over and a young girl ended up drowning in the pool when I was outside the barn. I refused to go in the barn because there was a dead girl in the bottom of the pool. We left her there but I was too afraid to go inside, like I could be harmed by her. Then her parents were threatening me because I let their daughter die because I wasn’t watching her like I was supposed to be. I remember hiding and avoiding them scared they were gonna kill me. Then I remember being in the woods out back with my kids, cousin and siblings. I tried gathering them up for a late evening trip to an aunt to drop my kids off for a sleepover. It’s fuzzy now but things just kept not working out the way I planned. There were many obstacles, and feelings of fear, being overwhelmed and doom.

-Lynette 2015-06-19 11:32:23

Hi, my mum just called and she was a little distressed. She had a dream about me, I was a little girl and I was drowning in muddy or very dirty water. I don’t know if there was more to the dream because she couldn’t remember it all. I was wondering what this meant, my mother told me is was very bad.

Thank you

-Tiffany 2015-06-17 14:44:43

I just had a very odd dream. I dreamt that I was hanging out with my friends first, looking at pictures of my girlfriend and later on I dreamt that I was at some party with my cousins. My cousin and I left our leather jackets there and needed to get them back. My mother wouldn’t let me drive alone to get them so she decided we should swim there. I’m not a very good swimmer but apparently in this dream, we were both decent swimmers. So then at one point, we both have to dive into a certain tunnel like thing and then we’d be close enough. My mom decides to go first and she’ll help me afterward if I can’t get through. The second I start to dive down, I am paralyzed. It’s like I can’t even move, like I’m frozen in place. I try and try to dive down but for whatever reason, I am not able to. So I swim upward until I hit land and I’m gasping for breath, crying because I’ve left my mom and I can’t get to her. One of my friends finds me and takes me with her, and then I end up with my sister and dad. As we’re driving home, my sister tells me that mom’s home too and she’s fine. That she was waiting outside of the house and she said I had to make her food when I came home which I found funny and I relaxed because if my mom can joke then she’s fine. But once we get home, my mom is nowhere to be found. We call my brother and it turns out that my mom collapsed and had passed. He was in the hospital. We rushed over there, and they wouldn’t let me see her. They took me in for testing instead and all I Wanted was to see her. I have no idea what any of this dream means. It meant no sense to me.

-Carlos 2015-06-09 10:32:22

I had a dream where I was driving in the car with my girlfriend, and it was raining and it started to get flooded. It stopped raining and we kept driving, we passed a pool and I saw like 4/5 people laying down next to a pool, one of them was my friend, so anyways we kept driving and for some reason, I saw alot of cop lights and ambulances and I asked my girlfriend, “hey look, what happened?” We drove through there and it was the same pool with the same people but they were drowned, when I glanced to see I saw the same people laying down in the same ordered but at the way bottom of the pool. I told my girlfriend but she didn’t say anything, we kept driving, ( remember the streets are flooded ) & i started seeing alot of people, just laying there underwater they were drowned. We kept driving and we kept seeing more people, its like everyone was drowning. But all the people had their faces covered with their long black hair, i told my girlfriend ” look babe, you don’t see all this? ” & she said no, she was like what’s wrong? & I told her to look out the window and she just said that it was just people laying there. On our way back home, I saw posters with a girl kinda looked like the lady from the movie ” the purge ” & the poster said ” keep it up “.
Can someone please tell me what this dream means or something?

-Vanessa 2015-06-06 19:02:20

Dear Anna, ,l have a dream where
I am submerged, except for my head/ mouth in warm water pool which the sun shining on it. It’s pleasurable I’m ok. There are people of the bank who cam see me. Slowly I feel I am sinking; they can see this ; can not call out or get their attention. I feel embarrassed ;/ intimidated. They are talking about me. I try to rectify the situation by waving my arm but I can’t see whether it’s working; I feel uncomfortable and anxiety

    -Anna - Tony's Assistant 2015-06-08 15:16:56

Dear Vanessa – The pool is a symbol of the inner world of your mind and imagination. It particularly links with looking into yourself and becoming aware of what you are feeling or daydreaming.
This awareness did provide you with an ability to become aware of your feelings and meeting them – “I feel embarrassed/ intimidated. I feel uncomfortable and anxiety” – can serve as a first step to help you to pass beyond them to a fuller life.
When you “are sinking” you become aware of what other people are thinking of you and/or what unconscious parts of you are thinking of you.
Often the judgmental thoughts we have about ourselves are so ingrained, that we might not even be aware of them anymore, yet they still influence us.
Perhaps it will be helpful to read http://dreamhawk.com/dream-dictionary/mother-mum-ma/#InnerMother
    and
    http://dreamhawk.com/dream-dictionary/father-dad/#InnerFather
I choose to see those people on the bank as judgmental aspects in yourself and learning to not judge yourself for the “sinking” situation you perceive yourself in, will help you take another step towards self-acceptance and self-love.
A helpful tool to play with your dream and to explore other possibilities of responding to the situation you are in is Power Dreaming.
You can for instance enter the dream while awake and let the whole situation in the dream be the same except that this time you feel okay with sinking, you can breathe under water and you decide that it does not bother you when other people talk about you, nor do you feel you have to rectify anything at all. When you have tried this different approach you can allow yourself to go up again and feel the sun shining on you.
Your dreams are a unique area of self-expression. They are a safe area to experiment and experience things in any way you wish. Often we introvert, or take into our dream life, rules and fears that have no place there. For example, while dreaming, you may fall into the sea and be terrified you will drown. But that is impossible because you are only experiencing images of your feelings and thoughts. All you can do is to feel fear. You can easily breathe under water in a dream, or fly, or die and be re-born. So remove such limitations from your inner life by visualising such changes into your dreams when awake. Imagine yourself being what you can in your dreams. Even passive people who couldn’t stand up for themselves can change as they do this.
    See http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/secrets-power-dreaming/
    Good Luck!
    Anna 🙂

-Dana 2015-06-04 23:25:02

I had a dream that I had paved a baby in a swing and had the house hanging on the child so it could play with the water. I got distracted and when I realized I had left the baby alone I walked to the area where it was and found that the child was hanging in a plastic bag that was over flowering with water from the hose… I quickly grabbed the baby and shook it and pressed its chest beginning CPR as I cried and pleaded for God to help me. Then suddenly the baby began to choke and expel water and cry. .. what does this mean?

    -Anna - Tony's Assistant 2015-06-06 13:28:19

Dear Dana – The baby in your dream, like any baby, is something new and vulnerable that has come to life – come to your life. So it is about something new and growing in your love, in your work, or in yourself.
    See also http://dreamhawk.com/pregnancy-childbirth/the-baby-in-your-dream/
Often these new born parts in us are still somewhat unbalanced and I feel the swing is a symbol of that.
And so it can express the shift or swing between opposites – opposites of emotion, of thought or viewpoint. This swing is particularly evident in childhood, during which a child does not control its reactions and so expresses its whole range of feelings. So the swing may be between murderous anger and loving action – depression and elation – heaven and hell.
A garden hose for watering is about your efforts to look after and promote this new born part in you.
You wrote “I got distracted” and so perhaps you can explore what made that you lost awareness of your inner baby?
    See also http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/self-observation/
Also what do you associate with a plastic bag; a rubbish sack?
    See http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/association-of-ideas-with-dreams/#Working
In dreams a rubbish sack probably refers to the things such as parts of your experience and feelings you, or society, no longer feel is useful. Occasionally one discards, or considers as useless, some aspect of self, or ability, which is actually valuable.
You do arrive at that conclusion too that this dream baby is valuable and you very well manage to bring it back to life again.
To get a better understanding of what your inner baby is a symbol of you can use “Being the baby” and/or “Talking as the baby”.
    See http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/acting-on-your-dream/#BeingPerson
    and
    http://dreamhawk.com/dream-dictionary/practical-techniques-for-understanding-your-dreams/#TalkingAs
Also while Being the Baby it might be helpful to switch from the baby in the swing to the baby in the plastic bag because by switching backwards and forward it begins to clarify because of the different feelings we get from each “baby situation”. I know it takes practice.
Exploring your own dreams is a wonderful tool to support your inner growth too.
    See http://dreamhawk.com/dream-dictionary/practical-techniques-for-understanding-your-dreams/
    Good Luck!

-Gabrial 2015-05-23 13:34:01

Okay, so I jumped into a pool with two other people in it, but it was the deep end. I hit the bottom and started spinning and I couldn’t stop. I also wouldn’t open my eyes for some reason. I was trying to save myself and I could feel myself getting closer to the surface, but I don’t think I was going to make it. Then, a girl pulled me up onto the edge of the pool, I barely know her. The dream ended there. ???

    -Anna - Tony's Assistant 2015-05-24 16:35:48

Dear Gabrial – Jumping is about taking a risk; a leap into a situation that is uncertain.

Please explore what you associate with these two other people who jumped with you:
    http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/association-of-ideas-with-dreams/#Working
While you hit the bottom, you hit the lowest point or worst point and that could mean meeting some aspects of yourself (or others?) which you perceive as difficult to face or to admit, so you keep your eyes closed. It might mean that you chose not to look yet at something at the back of your mind – known but pushed to the back.
Jumping in a pool together can symbolise the way you share an experience with these two people; especially the aspect of this relationship where feelings or influence permeates you from the people you are mixing with. For instance you might be part of a social group that starts using drugs and be influenced to join in drug usage.
It will be helpful to explore why you started spinning (out of control?). Did you feel afraid at that point in the dream?
If you take away the images and events occurring in a dream and simply look to see what feelings or emotions are evident, the dream is often more understandable than if you try to interpret the symbols. Feelings in dreams are nearly always undistorted. You therefore do not need to interpret them, simply to recognise them and see if you can recognise where they occur in waking life.
    See http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/emotions-and-mood-in-dreams/
Help was offered you when you felt that you were not going to make it to the surface and once again it is helpful to explore what you associate with that girl you barely know, for it is this inner aspect of yourself that got you out of a situation that you perceived as overwhelming. So do trust that you have what it takes!
It will be helpful to enter your dream again while you are awake and explore it for yourself, so you can digest and integrate this experience.
    See http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/integration-meeting-oneself/
I think that the best approach is to use Power Dreaming; http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/secrets-power-dreaming/http://dreamhawk.com/approaches-to-being/questions-2/#Summing
    Good Luck!
    Anna 🙂

-Shane 2015-05-21 11:22:01

I have had the exact same dream for as long as i can remember.. I am in a dark house which I own and there is one room in the house that I do not enter as I hear ghost and noises that get louder or scarier the closer I go to see or listen, I look inside quickly to see stairs that lead up to a dark door I quickly see polyegiest and shut the door… The reason that I am now interested is because for the first time last night.. I opened the door walked up the stairs opened the door to see a corridor where a girl was standing facing the wall with her hand up she looked at me and I ducked back behind a wall when I looked back she was gone.. I walk straight down the hall bang on the area she was standing and it reveals a bright white corridor that had all these rooms in it with people in white robes.. They explain that they scare people so they don’t find the secret white rooms.. Why after years and years of this dream have I walked into the room I was scared of and ended up in this place?
Regards shane

    -Anna - Tony's Assistant 2015-05-24 17:15:17

Dear Shane – In general dreams recur because there are ways the dreamer habitually responds to their internal or external world. Because their attitude or response is unchanging, the dream that reflects it remains the same. It is noticeable in those who explore their dreams using such techniques as described under processing dreams, that recurring themes disappear or change because the attitudes or habitual anxieties that gave rise to them have been met or transformed.
    See http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/recurring-dreams/
And so your habitual anxiety disappeared and you dared to look into the dark room.
    Good for you!
When you dream of a house, you are meeting a hugely important and many sided representation of yourself. It is both many faceted and multidimensional.
Although you cannot see it, your mind, along with your beliefs, has a particular structure or form.
    See http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/the-house-in-your-dream/
Most of the things we are afraid of in dreams are things that we carry into the dream from our childhood. We are so programmed by what our parents fear or believe that we carry them into us and are haunted by them in our dreams. Obviously there are things to be afraid of in the outer life, but not in the world of our dreams where we are alone with ourselves.
The colour white has an enormous number of different associations. Most commonly it depicts being aware with a clearness of mind.
In certain dreams white is very threatening. Perhaps we have connections with hospitals in these dreams, and depict the anxieties and fear we have about illness or death.
So why not continue to explore your inner house and what these white rooms represent?
While awake and relaxed imagine yourself back in the dream and continue it as fantasy or a daydream and move it toward satisfaction.
    See http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/secrets-power-dreaming/
    Good Luck!
    Anna 🙂
