Bear
Often people dream of a bear coming to attack them, but because all the images, people, animals, places we see in our dreams, are simply your own feelings, fears, hopes and wonder projected onto the screen of your sleeping mind as images, there us nothing to be afraid of. So, it makes sense to take the image of your dream person, thing or animal back into you and own it. In that way, you are actually meeting and dealing with the things about yourself you are not owning or conscious of. That is why dreams are often difficult to understand, because we are hiding things from ourselves. To do this you can use – Being the Person or Thing and it is helpful to read Levels of the Brain
Whenever we dream its images are not like real life, because a dream is nothing like outer life where things could hurt you, but is an image like on a cinema screen, so that even if a gun is pointed at you and fired it can do no damage – except if you run in fear; so, all the things that scare you are simply your own fears projected onto the screen of your sleeping mind. Also dreams exress in a very ancient language, language that developed in ancient life forms before ever words were invented. The ancient languge is one that has taught youngsters by for millions of years by watching what mother or father fox, bear wolf did – all without words. This photo says it all – the family of bears are intently watching what mum is doing. they learn by seeing it, no words were spoken.
So the angry bear is an image of your own angry feelings that have not been expressed and are attacking you. We now know that such inturned anger can cause illness or depression.
Example: A huge black panther chased me. I fell and it clawed my back. It was about to chew my back to bite me. I didn’t know whether to relax or struggle. After being floored by the Panther I managed to get up. I later imagined being the panther. I allowed the panther to eat me, and I thus became the panther. Then I, as the panther, noticed feeling enormous temper – anger – hate. And I was amazed to see that my cousin Sidney was the cause of such powerful emotions. He was older than me and had mercilessly teased me as a child. The panther was my own feelings of anger, at last released.
But here is a very different example:
Example: I was standing on my patio and there was a bear inside the fence also there were children taunting the bear. I yelled at the kids to stop teasing the bear. Then all of a sudden the bear came towards me; it was a brown bear with its massive size and it stopped and looked at me. Although I was frightened I was courageous enough to pet the bears head, reaching over his large mouth to reach his head. Then, all of a sudden the bear lay on his back and I begin to brush my hand on his chest as to pet him in a downward motion, the bear just gazed at me.
A bear can have a similar meaning to elephant in the eastern countries – a tremendous force or energy, that if met badly can lead to conflict with your own nature and ill health, or if met well can be a tremendous protector and force for good.
Sometimes said to represent a possessive mother, and the feelings this has aroused. But in many cases the bear will represent a meeting with dangerous emotions such as fear, anger or being easily aroused. There might also be associations with independence, or strength. See: Dreams are Like a Computer Game; Animal.
Through television and the many ‘nature’ films which are now a part of our wider education, we can see that the bear is largely a solitary creature, capable of living alone and surviving. This, and its human way of standing and holding its arms out in a hugging posture, may be the major factors from which a ‘bear’ dream arises. In many dreams the bear is not at all harmful, and can be treated as a friend.
Through these we can also see the bear as a wonderful mother and protector.
We may therefore associate the bear with feelings about living alone or surviving by our own strength; it can refer to the confrontation with feelings we have about independence, or the meeting with strength and independence in someone else. It can confront us with massive or dangerous rage, such as ‘the bear with a sore head’. In this case it might represent your relationship with someone who is touchy or grouchy, powerful, possessiveness or smothering, as a parent or lover might be.
Also it might represent your relationship with someone who is a parent or lover; it could suggest a desire to withdraw or hibernate; the ‘animal’ side of our relationship with our parents; a play on words, such as ‘bare’, bare facts, bearing with something or someone, ‘bearing’ ones soul, bearing in mind, a ‘bearer’ of tidings, come to bear, overbearing, getting ones bearings, bear fruit or bear-hug.
If the bear is felt as aggressive and dangerous, ask yourself what in your own inner feelings do you feel is aggressive and you don’t want to let it get out into what you express. In other words. what is it that you habitually repress from being expressed – your anger?
It is best to let the angry bear be expressed in you imagination. You can do this by being the angry bear and let it loose – see – Being the Person or Thing
But the bear can also be like the Beauty and the Beast, in which the dangerous beast is tame with the influence of kindness. So the bear relates to person who can be kind, but could also be a dangerous when roused.
It could suggest a desire to withdraw or hibernate. Because of traditional cultural associations, and its ability to hibernate, the bear can represent the ability to die and be reborn.
As the bear rears its childrfen alone without any male about, if oyu have been in that situation it can reer to you. But whateveer else it represent, remember that is an image of our relationship with our own ‘animal’ side. Please see the following to understand this important feature – Mammal Brain
There can be a play on words, such as ‘bare’, bare facts, bearing with something or someone, ‘bearing’ ones soul, bearing in mind, a ‘bearer’ of tidings, come to bear, overbearing, getting ones bearings, bear fruit or bear-hug. Because of traditional cultural associations, and its ability to hibernate, the bear can represent the ability to die and be reborn.
Bear attacking: It could mean that you are feeling or dealing with anger in yourself or another.
But many people dream of being chased by a bear and maybe run in fear or terror from the bear. Not only in your own dreams, but other people’s, it is obvious that we take into our sleep and dreams all the fears, terrors we carry within us. The huge bear, tiger or frightening person they are terrified of is actually fears either inherited or are frightening experiences from the past. They are purely mental things that you haven’t faced, and are therefore the victims of – victims of your own fears. But in dreams in you cannot die – or drown, or burn or any other threatening thing. We make the mistake of taking our very real values from our outer life into our inner life of dreams. If a bear or critter is chasing you, it is only a dream image and so what are you running from? If you drop the image if the bear/critter what you have is a feeling or emotion such as fear. And why are you running like crazy from an emotion? Remember that nothing can hurt you in your dreams, but you can feel fear. See The animal in my dream
And do not think, “That monster is bigger and stronger than I am, and it is frightening!!” It is our thoughts and fears that create the monsters inside us. So of course you are stronger unless you cower in fear.
But that only refers to outer bears, not dream bears. In some northern towns a bear or polar bear can be a real danger, so in your dreams it may be about a threat you need to keep watch for – although it is a bear in your dream, it could be any threat.
It can also, like the following dream, show a fight against disease.
Example: I dreamt that I was my older brother. As him, and yet at the same time myself, I was trying to fight off an attacking bear. I was doing all I could to defeat it but there was no let up.
Two days later my brother suddenly died from a vicious virus he had contracted while doing his job as a taxi driver. I feel as if I were fighting the disease with him in the dream, but we both lost the battle.
Baby or toy bear: Often represents a child or a young dreamer.
Tame or loving bear: Many people have no fear of animals in their dreams but are like the examples below. Fear is caused because we mix up our dream life with our outer life.
Example: In my dream I was actually happy to see bears lying down at the entrance of my parent’s old house. They were all lying down there as if waiting for me. When they felt my presence they woke up. They were happy and groaning amicably when they saw me approaching them. And there were babies too! I never felt fear or any threat but happiness to see them … and I knew it was mutual.
Example: My dream was not frightful. My Bear dream and I were walking, he put his nose in my hand and nuzzled, we walked home, I went up to my door and Bear went next door and rolled around in the neighbors driveway and rested.
But as people are educated in the modern paradigm, many of us are totally out of touch with the animal that we are, and have never been able to raise it to love and protect us, and instead are often frightened of it when it appears on their dreams. As a child we are often told not to do things – such as do not get angry, or told to be nice to everyone, but the intuitive animal side of us feels and act on its superior insight – that would allow them to mature with our animal self intact so we grow up repressing it, and often miss the natural curiosity of our inner mammal.
So if you have a loving animal dream you have a very good and healthy relationship with your inner animal. See Levels of the Brain and Summing Up
Three bears as with father bear, mother bear etc.: Family situation or parental relationship.
If hint of money in the dream: might refer to ‘bear market’.
Useful Questions and Hints:
What were your feelings and interactions with the bear? (For instance were you avoiding, running from cooperating with, watching from a distance – and where does ‘avoiding’, ‘running from’, ‘cooperating’, or ‘observing’ enter your life at the moment?)
If you imagine yourself as the bear in your dream, what do you feel and experience?

I often have a dream About a bear being in my house trying to open doors. Years ago I had a dream that one was in my garage when I went out to get food in the freezer & as soon as I saw it it started to make noise like it was trying to talk, but I turned around & ran. I remember It had a paw out as I left & I held the garage door from the inside cause I had no time to lock It. As I let go to lock It the bear opened the door & I remember screaming before waking up. It was on all 4 & it was easily 8 feet tall on all 4 & it was a brown bear. Last night I had a very similar dream, but this time I was at my neighbors house in her Florida room. It was a summer night & I went to go out back to the pool but as I opened the door I saw giant bear. It wasn’t a brown bear like I always see tho, it had the same pattern/color as my cat(dilute calico). I screamed as I saw it (I ran into it as I opened th door & went out) & I quickly turned around to run. I remember it’s paw grabbed me by the arm but I pulled away & ran inside. It kept trying to open the door as I held onto the knob & I remember I was crying cause I was so sure it was going to eat me. It then started to hit the door when it couldn’t get the door open & I turned around to run inside & it opened the door, just like last time. Looking back onto both dreams I can tell that wasn’t it’s actual intention. I remember both times it was bear talking but I was in such a panic.
Laura – Don’t forget the Life itself can talk to us, as the bear has tried to do on several occasions.
Remember – whenever we dream its images are not like real life, because a dream is nothing like outer life where things could hurt you, but is an image like on a cinema screen, so that even if a gun is pointed at you and fired it can do no damage – except if you run in fear; so, all the things that scare you are simply your own fears projected onto the screen of your sleeping mind.
So I suggest you get back into your inner world, your imagination, because dreams and imagination are very alike; and go up to the bear and say you are sorry for not listening, and you are now ready to hear what it has to say. That bear certainly is persistent and wants to tell you something.
Because every part of a dream, whether an object, person or animal, is alive with our own intelligence for we created it from our core self. Each part has been created out of ourselves in some way, and depicts some area of our own total being. We can therefore talk with them. Such dialogue is of great importance and very revealing.
To do this, imagine yourself as one of the characters, animals or objects in your dream. It may help at first to have two chairs – one empty and one you are sitting in. The character or object of your dream is in the empty chair. When you are ready to be that character move from your chair, sit in the empty chair and speak as that character. To answer or question the character from your own identity, move to the original chair and speak from your own character.
Be playful and curious in doing this. Question the character, and when you move to that role, let whatever your feelings are as that character motivate what you say and do. Exploring your dream in this way unfolds a great deal of information that would otherwise remain unconscious. It also enables you to make real changes in unconscious attitudes or habits, as you are literally dialogging with areas of character patterning or programming, and can change them.
I have many dreams of bears, I should write a book. Mostly these dreams are happy, gentle and plaful and caring and sometimes sad but some dreams are extremely frightful and terrorfying, not that I am being attacked but men I have never met are being ripped to shreds, its very graphic and disturbing. I dont understand some of them but now I am trying to. One particular dream stands out the best.
I was a bird flying high amidst the clouds, the sun shone brightly and I could feel the wind beneath me. I looked down upon a field stretching for miles long as it was wide with small rolling hills on the horizen. There were many, hundreds of grizzley bears roaming below me, they looked like cattle grazing in the field. I swooped down and as i touched the earth, i turned into a beautiful maiden, my dress flowing gracefully in the wind, I took a long breathe as I slowly walked past all the grizzley bears, which turned to bow down to me as I past them. I touched their fur and gently patted a few as I went. They smiled as I walked further. I noticed at the end of the pasture, the biggest grizzley of them all staring out over the cliff at the field edge, as if waiting for me. I was excited and relieved to see him there. I came up behind him and grabbed ahold of his fur around its neck and hugged him. A great sigh of relief expelled from both of us as we stood there together overlooking the valley below. Then, there was no more time and I knew I had to leave again… The bear looked at.me.with sad eyes and my heart sank because i didnt want to leave but had to. Instantly i turned back into a bird and flew away.
This dream has always stayed with me. 🙁
Alana – A beautiful dream born out of your own inner gentleness and beauty.
The beginning of your dream is easy to understand – the bird you became with the wind beneath you and a vast view of the land beneath you; if you can understand that dreams use images and scenes to represent things that you realise or experience within you, you perhaps then understand that it represent something you have achieved through your life and inner beauty.
To put it briefly, you have gained an overview of life and living that only a few can achieve. If we take motherhood as an example, most people see it as relating to themselves or a few friends who have had babies; but if you have an overview of life you know it as relating to all warm blooded creatures. Because I cannot insert pictures into replies – See https://dreamhawk.com/interesting-people/tonys-photos-two/#Mother
That overview gave you a view of the hundred of bears, and also your own transformation in the beautiful maiden. There you met the group soul of the bears, or to express it in a different way, the Great Archetype of Bears. See https://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/archetypes/
Of course you saw all that in the dream world where the truth of you is shown in images and drama. But because dream images are like icons on a computer screen – you have to ‘click’ on your dream images to make them come alive. Thinking about them doesn’t work. You need to open yourself to the magic of them. To make them into the wonderful gateways they are you may have to learn certain skills, such as https://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/acting-on-your-dream/#BeingPerson also https://dreamhawk.com/poems/temple-of-the-animals/
I had a dream but it was from the point of view of an adult brown or grizzly bear. It was running from people. At one point it hid itself under water under a log. He used the log to hold himself under. He lived in a community-like place but the houses weren’t houses. They were only basements made from cement and came above ground only enough to have smaller windows. The bear was running through the woods to get back home and the windows weren’t windows, they were just openings and they didn’t have glass. The bear slid through the window and talked to his son who was a small cub. I can’t remember what the bear said to his cub. It was like the houses were like bases when playing tag. The humans couldn’t touch or get into the house/basement. I remember the bear walking up steps to peek outside and then I woke up.

Madison – A fascinating dream. Did you become the bear or simply witness it?
Your dream suggests that you are searching, maybe unconsciously, for a way of life that avoids the things most people take for granted.
You are searching for something that is natural to you, and the brown bear suggest a life lived alone, though you have a cub/child with you.
Going below the water surface and holding/hiding yourself there is a sign that you have entered your inner world, a great talent to have. But I get the feeling that you are hiding that ability from the people who live ‘above the surface’ all the time. See http://dreamhawk.com/inner-life/inner-world/#MakesInner
The basement level that we all live in, but many people are not aware of is the inner world or the unconscious. “The humans couldn’t touch or get into the house/basement.” See http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/what-is-the-unconscious/
In your dream you have a great awareness of this for you run and get back to the community in the basement. Above ground they have only smaller windows – in other words in our bodily life above ground we cannot see or hear so well. In fact our eyes only are aware of 1% of visible light, and 1% of audible sound.
In the dream you are aware of much more. In wider awareness you leave the limited view of the three dimensional world most of us are trapped in, and enter a world beyond time and space. Most of us, we only know life through the limitations of our body senses, and through the things we had be brought up to believe. We probably believe we ARE the shape of our body, and we can only do what it can do. However, as can be seen from the lives of some of the people who have extended their awareness, our mind can sometimes reach completely beyond the body senses. When we first find the narrow walls of our senses disappearing, most of us feel some panic, and may fear we are dying. Some people having an anaesthetic feel this fear.
Imagine you are going to communicate with a part of yourself that has an unlimited amount of information and influence to share with you. What this dimension of yourself gives you will be in direct response to what you ask. So the question you ask will be the factor shaping the response. So ask yourself why you are not admitting to yourself that you have an enormous ability. See http://dreamhawk.com/inner-life/using-your-intuition-1/
All of my nightmares for as long as I can remember revolved around disproportionately huge grizzly bears. Last night I dreamed that my family and I among others were trapped in a small room with a huge grizzly probably 2x-3x the size of a normal grizzly. The bear seemed mostly uninterested in us unless someone tried to run away, or talked too loudly, in which case he killed them. There was a bunk bed that some of us were sitting on, and when the bear got close to it, we all moved to the other side and the bed began to tilt. Somehow I knew that we couldn’t draw attention to ourselves for fear of being attacked. I remember asking where my sister was (though she was much younger in the dream than in real life) and my father said he had her. My brother said he was tired of waiting around and asked our mother if he could “volunteer to die” so the bear would focus on him and everyone else could leave. The oddest part was he seemed so non-chalant about it. Like he was offering because he was truly just bored – not as a brave sacrifice. And my mother agreed, which is much unlike her, because she usually babies him. My brother then walked out (quite loudly) and we all waited for the bear to attack, and he didn’t even seem to notice. So one random character (not someone I remember) ran off and one after another everyone ran out. The bear followed, clawing down whoever he could get to. I vaguely remember my father dropping my baby sister, and the bear got to them, and then my brother, then mother. Then I woke up in a cold sweat and crying. What could this mean? My other bear related nightmares in years past never had any violence involved, just the threat of it.

Elnora – Firstly, whenever we dream its images are not like real life, because a dream is nothing like outer life where things could hurt you, but is an image like on a cinema screen that even if a gun is pointed at you and fired it can do no damage – except if you run in fear. So all the things that scare you are simply your own fears projected onto the screen of your sleeping mind.
You were born in the USA, where people have great fear of bears. The bear entry on my site is one of the highest hits of visitors.
But your dream describes to you what the cause is, “The bear seemed mostly uninterested in us unless someone tried to run away, or talked too loudly, in which case he killed them.”
In other words it was your fear that created the dream of being attacked and killed – another great fear with enormous amount of hits. If the dream troubles you, try imagining yourself facing the bear, realising that it cannot hurt you in dreams, and then see if he can find a different ending using http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/secrets-power-dreaming/
Example: To shield myself against a tiger I hid behind a door. The tiger was large with bloodstained paws. Some people stopped outside the door to look at the tiger. I told them to move along, as it had a very uncertain temper, and could easily attack. In fact it began to grow restless and growl. They went. I saw the deep colours of the tiger, and the blood. I was terrified that at any moment it would pull the door away from me. The tiger attacked me when I came from behind the door, and swallowed me. Now instead of feeling separate I was the tiger, and delighted in his movements and anger.
None of my bear dreams were like any of the scenarios that any of the dream sites put out. In mine I was walking in the woods and saw a bear walking beside me. A polar bear. When I noticed him, he stoped and sat down on a log and looked at me. We just looked at each other, and eventually I kept walking. Then I noticed him again, and he points with his lips like some animals do toward another bear catching up with him. They both just sit down nicely and look at me, smiling like animals do. All three of us, hang around there with very good feels. And that’s it. The second one I’m being chased by wolves, and finally get away, look back, and the wolves are surrounding the two bears. They look at me, and I have this strong desperation to rescue my bear buddies. So I go back, and the dreamers there.

Holly – All dreams are like finger prints, and so have different areas. But your dream is about the bears and you – Tame or loving bear: Many people have no fear of animals in their dreams but are like the examples below. So if you have a loving animal dream you have a very good and healthy relationship with your inner animal. See http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/brain-levels-and-dreams/#mammalbrain
But you go onto expressing your fear of wolves, which obviously have been programmed into you. Wolves do not attack bears, for bears can with one swipe kill a wolf – also there are no records of wolf attacks on human’s or bears, except in the fantasy world of films. Try using http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/acting-on-your-dream/#BeingPerson It opens a new world of understanding, for whenever we dream its images are not like real life, because a dream is nothing like outer life where things could hurt you, but is an image like on a cinema screen that even if a gun is pointed at you and fired it can do no damage – except if you run in fear. Last night i had a dream that my family and I were swimming in a lake and met up with a baby bear. My little brother was swimming under water and thus didn’t notice, and was attacked. We tried yelling for him but he couldn’t hear.

Kyra – All the people, animals, places you see in your dreams, are simply your own feelings, fears, hopes and wonder projected onto the screen of your sleeping mind as images. So, it makes sense to take the image of your dream person, thing or animal back into you and own it. In that way, you are meeting and dealing with the things about yourself you are not owning or conscious of. That is why dreams are often difficult to understand, because we are hiding things from ourselves.
So your dream brother – when you think about a brother, you are only taking in your thoughts, impressions and feelings about them. So many people do not realise that they have an inner person equally as powerful as the external person you know. You have taken in millions of bits of memory, lessons learnt, life experiences along with all the feelings or problems met by meeting or living with them, and they change you and make you the person you are. The memories and experience we gather unconsciously change us and are not lost. It is part of you and is symbolised in dreams as a person or event. Such an inner person can appear in dreams because you still carry the memories or impressions of them, and so they influenced what you hold within you.
I take it you cared for your brother when he was little, so he represents a vulnerable part of you. Your family in the lake, well apart from your adventurous by vulnerable self, you were on the surface of something with a lot of depth. This is how dreams depict the enormous of activities and awareness that underlies our conscious personality. See http://dreamhawk.com/inner-life/the-unconscious-2/
When we first experience going under the surface of this immensity we are often afraid. Many people as their awareness reaches beyond what they feel is their normal self feel scared. Such resistances cause us to create awful dreams and fears as a means of avoiding our own inner world and its wonders. We feel that we will be swallowed up and we will die. It is important to say that when we meet the experience of powerlessness through becoming aware of the hugeness of your Life, which we are usually unaware if, it feels like something alien or attacking, and it is a shock. See http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/going-beyond/
It seems your fear may have been transmitted when you were a baby or very young by your mother. See http://dreamhawk.com/approaches-to-being/opening-to-life/
Just as a fox cub ‘learns’ how to hunt from its parents, so we absorb the deeply etched survival strategies of our parents simply by being around them. If genes come into it anywhere, they perhaps create the reflex response that instinctively draws in the survival tactics that perhaps even our parents themselves have never really been aware they live by. In doing this the higher animals learn what cannot be passed on as instinct, what is not ‘hard wired’ into them. This holds in it a tremendous advantage because ‘hard wiring’ takes a long time. Through this faster method we learn what to be afraid of, what to eat, how to hunt, because the lessons learned by pain through many generations are exhibited in our parents behaviour in dealing with events.Unfortunately, we absord all their bad survival techniques as well as positive ones – depending who your parents are/were.
I dreamt I fed my mom to a bear. A big brown bear. What does that mean?

Shawna – It is most likely you moving toward being independent; making your own decisions and developing a life of your own. Don’t hurry it, for it is a move toward personal growth.
Hurting, burying or killing parent: It show a move to be free of the introverted restraints and ready made values gathered from our parents, at some time in our growth we may kill or bury them in our dreams. Although some people are shocked by such dreams, they are healthy signs of emerging independence. Old myths of killing the chief so the tribe can have a new leader, depict this process. When father or mother is ‘dead’ in our dream, we can inherit all the power gained from whatever was positive in the relationship. See http://dreamhawk.com/dream-dictionary/growth-of-something/
I dreamt I was asleep on the side of the road, like a bypass but on the verge, there was grass, I was sleeping with someone, I was feeling very cold cuddled under the blanket I had, there had been attacks on people and I knew this, I was almost waiting for something to come? I could hear it coming and it was a big grizzly bear and I felt it bite my foot, I felt the pain and heard the bones cracking, I was terrified, I tried to scream but it wouldn’t come out I felt like I was choking on it, I woke myself up and woke my husband up because I was so frightened,Steve had to cuddle me to settle me down I was so scared, I couldn’t sleep after because I was afraid it would come back like it was waiting for me? I couldn’t put my foot near the edge of the bed in case it happened again I haven’t had a nightmare like this since I was a child.

I had a dream that I was in a courtyard of some sort. It was surrounded by a gate, with many entrances. All of the entrances were blocked by many bears. They were all huddled up and non aggresive, but I was still afraid of them. There was only one entrance that had no bears in front of it, so I quickly got out. As I got out, a young Asian man approached me and said “You know there’s another entrance over there that you could’ve used” and I explained to him that they were blocked by bears. He then nodded and walked away. Does anyone know what this could mean?
I had a dream where it seemed as though I was at this wildlife reservation and from what I can remember, at least three bears came to attack me. I had claw marks every where and I remember in the dream getting stitches for a mark on my abdomen. The person I think I was with attacked the bears back and killed them. In the dream I wasn’t afraid of the bear, I think I felt sorry for either me or the bear and just let them attack me. Towards the end of the dream, a bear was standing and I think we went to pet it but it then had this wild look in its eyes and followed me and my friend, to then attack us. After the last attack, I then remembered feeling so scared to cross paths with one again.
I had a dream I was on the porch of my home (whuch is not where I actually live) I had a large fenced in yard with green grass and was standing on a patio….there was a bear inside the fence…there were children taunting the bear…I yelled at the kids to stop teasing the bear…all of a sudden the bear came towards me…it was a brown bear with its massive size stop and looked at me…altho i was frightend i was courageous enough to pet the bears head…reaching over his large mouth to reach his head…all of a sudden the bear lays on his back and I begin to brush my hand on his chest as to pet him in a down ward motion…the bear just gazed at me…I then woke up…what does this mean?

Bears in dreams are often seen as attacking and angry, and we all have within us a mammalian brain – See http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/brain-levels-and-dreams/
Maybe as a child you responded to your inner animal in a teasing way, but now as a woman you are no longer afraid, and now have tamed this part of you and it is now a huge resource and strength. This is what Native Americans mean when they become a wolf or a bear – the interiorise their strength and wisdom. Yti it your self by Being the bear as suggested above.
I had a dream last night that I was watching a river close up and across the bank I saw a bear watching a cougar who was hunting in the water. I’ve always loved animals but I joke around with my friends saying bears and cougars, “I don’t know what I’d do if one approached me!!”
But in my dream I was curious and excited to see them. Then the cougar catches some type of animal, it was not a fish, maybe a deer. Then the bear goes in the water with the cougar and they both share the kill. And then they get out of the river across the bank and continue walking with each other.

You should know that a waking life bear and a dream bear are totally different creatures. So, whenever we dream its images are not like real life, because a dream is nothing like outer life where things could hurt you, but is an image like on a cinema screen, so that even if a gun is pointed at you and fired it can do no damage – except if you run in fear; so all the things that scare you are simply your own fears projected onto the screen of your sleeping mind.
All the images, people, animals, places we see in our dreams, are simply your own feelings, fears, hopes and wonder projected onto the screen of your sleeping mind as images. So, it makes sense to take the image of your dream person, thing or animal back into you and own it. In that way, you are actually meeting and dealing with the things about yourself you are not owning or conscious of. That is why dreams are often difficult to understand, because we are hiding things from ourselves.
I have had a couple bear dreams… last year, I dreamt I was walking in a field along the edge of the woods, and I noticed a black bear was shadowing me, walking in the woods near the edge. At first I was scared, then I realized the bear was walking with me, not stalking me.
Last night I had a dream about a very large brown bear in the attic of my garage. I went in there looking for my dog, but found only the bear. I was afraid, and left the attic. When I returned, the bear was gone. Suddenly I was in walking near the edge of the woods, and found a small clearing/natural entrance to the deep woods… I knew the big brown bear was in there, and I was hesitant to go in, but I still went in looking for him. However, I didn’t see him in the woods when I went looking

It is also important to realise that every image, every scary or terrifying thing, is taken place inside you, in your mind, as you sleep. This means that every awful animal, every scary thing or person, is created out of your own fears and must not be seen as outside you as happens in waking awareness. The problem is that we are often scared of or frightened of actually experiencing our emotions and so they confront us in our dreams. Avoiding them or controlling them is like running away from oneself – there is no escape. So it’s a good ideas to make friends with your bear. See Life’s Little Secrets
I dream’t I was sleeping with a chubby, cozy baby bear (about 3 ft. big )and (I guess) a boyfriend. It was in between us and I drew warmth and fell asleep myself after being a little scared. When it woke up we quietly shooed it out of the house or it went by itself.
