About
Welcome to DreamHawk.com, one of the longest running dream interpretation sites in existence. Millions of people have accessed its database of dream symbols, interpretations and reference material.
The site began in the mid-eighties on CompuServe, and later was called Waves. It has over 6000 individual pages of information.
About the Author
Tony Crisp is an internationally renowned expert on dreams and their interpretation. His bestselling Dream Dictionary: An A to Z Guide to Understanding Your Unconscious Mind has become a classic of the genre. Based on material from thousands of dreams gathered during three decades of research, the Dream Dictionary has been translated into seven languages worldwide. See Tony’s Books
Tony has worked at the vanguard of the personal development and self-help movement for more than fifty years, co-founding in the 1970s one of the first human growth centres in the UK. In addition to teaching and leading groups in self-development and yoga, Tony has worked variously as a photographer, journalist, writer and broadcaster both in the UK and abroad. He was LBC’s resident dream therapist for seven years.
Tony was also the earliest writer on dreams who attempted a dream dictionary not based on the more rigid dream theories derived from Freudian or Jungian ideas. His book Do You Dream, published in 1971, was one of the first of his many other books about dreams and the inner life, and included a dream dictionary.
He has five children and currently lives alone in a cottage in Wales. For a more detailed look at Tony’s life see Biographical Information.
But more important than that is that I am an ‘End User’. That is I present myself not as an authority on dreams but as an end user who has used dreams to survive, to find the unborn part of me, and that it has taken me most of my life. As an end user I dealt in the dreams I was using. In this way I earned a living and hopefully showed other people how to ‘use’ dreams as well. I had an intense feeling with this, as if it was vitally important, and that presenting myself in this way would alter the whole direction of my life.

Hi Tony, I just discovered this site and thought to give it a try.
My dream: I am at a party in a large white mansion at the edge of the forest. There are many guests. I have been partying all night, but now I am tired and want to go home. Night time has been sneaking up on me. I stand on the mansion’s veranda under the night sky, looking down its wide staircase and into the forest. Chills and fear overcome me as I realize that it has become too dark for me to find my way home walking through the dense, dark forest this late at night. I am feeling rather lonesome and lost and try to call my mother (who recently passed away) wanting to ask her to send me a cab to take me home safely.
Then I woke up. Thanks so much for any guidance you can give me with the interpretation of the symbology of this dream!

Hi Tony, I have been reading your site since 2 years ago and it has been very helpful to achieve a clear insight about my dreams. For a specific dream, I would like to know your opinion/interpretation.
In dream, I (a woman at 40) was in my childhood house with my younger sister and brother. That was exactly the house I was living when I was about 10. But we were in current age. We heard something knocked the door. My brother opened the door, then two big tigers jumped inside the building. I thought as my brother is going to buy sometime, I will manage to find a way to run.
As I was trying to run away, one of tigers jumped in front of me. I tried several time and it did it every time. Then I noticed I am its target. The other tiger was quite and walking around. The last time I tried to run, the tiger was just in front of me and very close. I leaned on the wall behind me and covered my head with my hands and sat on the floor. I saw the tiger jumped in the air toward me. But I became unconscious in dream ( I really become unconscious for a while and it was nothing there). I woke up in my bedroom leaning on my bed while I was sitting on the floor. It was very quite and door was closed. I thought my brother has found a way to manage the situation. I turned my head toward the best and saw that both tigers are on my bed. The quiet one was under blanket but the other one was on the blanket. As soon as tiger saw I am awake, It jumped on me. and attracting me. As I was sitting in the same situation was just trying to block him to reach my face. I was afraid it harms my face by bitting my cheeks. He was pushing me all the time until I noticed it does not want to harm me or attack me. It just wanted to push me to fondle it on its skin. It was trying to show me how it wants it. I started fondling the tiger. And it became managed. It put its face and neck on my shoulder, very close to me. As I was touching its nice skin I tried to see what is its gender. As soon as I figured out it is a male, both the tigers became a twin brothers standing in front of me.
Very long, sorry 🙁
I appreciate if you give me your thoughts.
All the best
Hello.
I dreamt last night about my close girlfriends. My friend was the focal point of the dream and she was wearing her wedding dress. Her two bridesmaids (also my friends) were helping her get ready. They were all organising a flower bouquet that was very pretty. However my friend had cut her hair into a block fringe and died her hair black. I was trying to explain that the fringe didn’t look right and you couldn’t see her face properly. I was frustrated because they weren’t listening and I could remember how pretty she looked on her actual wedding day. It was also Halloween and we were reusing the wedding dress as her costume. My other friend was also around and wearing her dress. We were rushing to get to a Halloween party but no one had checked the see if anyone was actually having a party we had just assumed if we got ready for a party there would be one. I remember trying to keep up with the girls but I couldn’t. I tired to stress that there was no point in rushing if we didn’t know where we were going. A friend stayed behind with me whilst they hurried off into the dark to try and get to a party and I gave up chasing them with my friend and we talked about how the rush was pointless.
Any insight? Why the flower arranging?
Thanks. Amy.
Dear Amy – Your dream reflects inner conflicts and it may also be helpful to learn to dialogue.
Every part of a dream whether it is an object, person or animal is alive with your own intelligence. Each part has been created out of your selves in some way, and depicts some area of your own total being. You can therefore talk with them. Such dialogue is of great importance and very revealing; http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/dialogue-with-a-dream-character-or-object/
A part of you – symbolised by your friend in the wedding dress – has adopted a new public persona that your dream figure does not like.
What role/aspect do you feel your dream figure expresses in the dream; http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/acting-on-your-dream/#BeingPerson
The persona, for Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung, was the social face the individual presented to the world—”a kind of mask, designed on the one hand to make a definite impression upon others, and on the other to conceal the true nature of the individual”.
Concealing your true nature may also be reflected by your dream figure perceiving it as a “costume, dress up and pretend/assume party”.
Some people have problems learning to cope with the discrepancy between the persona and their true nature; if we want to be successful in our outer life we are not always able to express what is really going on in our inner life.
Organizing the flower bouquet may suggest that another part of you perceives the “dress and new hair arrangement” as a way towards opening up towards different abilities or feelings, as in flowering.
To explore this idea you could use “Being the friends who are organising a flower bouquet”.
Perhaps your dream figure believes/perceives that the price of hiding your true nature does not outweigh the benefits of “flowering”?
The girls that continue to rush to a Halloween party while you stay behind with a friend may symbolise that your true nature and your public persona are not in sync with each other; they are diverging.
A way towards exploring integration may be to first step into the role of your friend in the wedding dress who has cut her hair into a block fringe and dyed her hair black.
You wrote that in your dream “we had just assumed if we got ready for a party there would be one.”
In a way this idea suggests that if you use active imagination you may find that you can learn to enter social relationships and feel okay with “playing a role” while you are simultaneously in touch with your true nature; being in touch does not necessarily mean you express your true feelings.
This joining could be expressed by uniting your dream figure with the friend in the wedding dress and go to the party together.

My dream was of me getting in to the plane but falling once I tried to get on to the plane
Hi Tony,
I had a dream last night where I had a disabled sibling. He was about half my age and in a wheelchair paralysed from the neck down and he is also deaf. He is half my age so 12.
I was walking with him, my mum and my dad (I do have real life siblings but they weren’t in the dream). I was wheeling him and my parents were walking either side. As I’m walking I have pressed myself against him so that he can feel the vibrations when I talk and he can understand what I’m saying. I wonder why I don’t see him that often – I think he spends time in a home. In my head I say that it’s because my mum wants to pretend we are a normal family. As I get closer to him physically I feel spiritually closer to him.
The thing that is strange is that I dreamt of him before and sometimes in my dreams I dream the same people or buildings. I just wondered what this meant.
Thank you
x.x.
Dear Danielle – Your dream sibling may reflect a part of you that did not get a chance yet to express your full potential; http://dreamhawk.com/dream-dictionary/disabled/
I believe that if we are honest with ourselves, we would all dream at some point in our life about a disabled sibling or other person, because very few of us – if any – get to express our full potential.
What I see in your dream is that you have found a loving and creative way to communicate with this part of you; “As I’m walking I have pressed myself against him so that he can feel the vibrations when I talk and he can understand what I’m saying” and “As I get closer to him physically I feel spiritually closer to him.”
You could use this approach that works in your dream in your imagination as well to integrate this part of you so that it can continue to develop and grow stronger in your inner world.
Because this part of your psyche is reflected as male, it may also be helpful to read http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/archetype-of-the-animus-jungs-view-of-the-male-in-the-female/
It is worthwhile to explore if your mum who wants to pretend you are a normal (inner) family is a part of you as well; http://dreamhawk.com/dream-dictionary/mother-mum-ma/#InnerMother
There may be settings in which it is wise to decide to pretend to be normal.
The persona, for Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung, was the social face the individual presented to the world—”a kind of mask, designed on the one hand to make a definite impression upon others, and on the other to conceal the true nature of the individual”.
When you are alone with yourself (in the inner world of your dreams) it may serve the purpose of inner growth to look at aspects of your inner world that you would normally hide “in a home” (in your waking life).
A reoccurring dream may mean that there is a need to learn something and by looking at and perhaps working on your dream – http://dreamhawk.com/dream-dictionary/practical-techniques-for-understanding-your-dreams/ – you can answer this inner call.

I have tried numerous times to fill in the app for registration but it never works. At first I could not work out that you had to move pictures, as I never saw it before on any other site. Then it did not work even when I did figure it out. I suggest you simply use the usual one all the other sites use.

Hi Tony, awesome site, wonder if you could assist.
I had a very vivid dream bout a work colleague who bought soft ladies woollen cardigans, she showed them to me, they were so pretty with soft colors. She said she got them very cheap! They were so beautiful… The thing is she is not the type of person to wear those clothes, and is very masculine in her outlook!
Thank you.
D
Dear Dawn – Thank you for your appreciation for Tony’s Life Work; I will pass it on to him.
What I see in your dream – and please explore it yourself as well http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/dream-yoga/ and http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/acting-on-your-dream/#BeingPerson – is that you are looking at another side of your personality – your colleague – and you are exploring what a certain change of attitudes/habits (clothes) will look like to you.
Probably because you identify yourself with your body and/or your inner male – see http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/identification-and-identity/ and http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/archetype-of-the-animus-jungs-view-of-the-male-in-the-female/ – you feel that wearing these beautiful, soft new clothes do not fit with the image you have of yourself and so with the side of yourself that you identify with.
Buying the cardigans for a very cheap price suggests that you do not have to go through a lot of effort to develop this more soft, feminine and gentle side of yourself.
To get a deeper, feeling understanding of this aspect of yourself you can use “Being the colleague” while wearing one of those soft, woollen cardigans and “Being the colleague” while taking the cardigan off again and explore the change in thoughts and feelings that will arise.
Anna 🙂
Thanks Dawn.

I had a dream about my husband ( btw we have been separated for a year and a half now), the dream was in my new flat ( I do not live there now). and it was spacious (more than its real size) and the door keeper came to open it for me, I found some pieces of furniture in every room but non of the rooms were fully furnished, I did not really like the furniture as it was not my taste, yet I felt that someone was trying to help me furnish my new apartment. I asked the doorkeeper who got this furniture and he appeared (my husband) and he said I bought this furniture, I still was not comfortable with the style of wood the beds and closets were made of, yet I kept it to myself. He kissed me and then I woke up. Can you please help tell me what it means?
Dear Sahar – Please read this first; http://dreamhawk.com/news/summing-up/
Your dream starts with becoming aware how your mind has expanded, how your awareness of what goes on in your inner world has grown; “and it was spacious (more than its real size).”
A spacious place can also show your inner potential; that what is not developed and expressed and so still latent.
The door keeper might be a symbol of your own ability or a form of external help you might receive to open up your mind to explore what is in the rooms; what is in and on your mind.
You do not mention if you recognize any of the pieces of furniture that you find in the different rooms.
Furniture in dreams is a symbol of attitudes or habits – http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/habits/ – developed from family or home life, especially if it is a piece of furniture from family home or a past dwelling. They also express the beliefs – http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/beliefs/ – or feelings we ‘furnish’ our mind with, perhaps from a past relationship (with your husband).
I feel that it serves a purpose to explore the “someone” (which aspect of you) who is trying to help you furnish your new apartment; http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/acting-on-your-dream/#BeingPerson
Your inner husband appearing and informing you that it was you who bought the furniture, might refer to him pointing out to you to take full responsibility for everything you decided to “take inside you” while living with him.
In a relationship, whether a feeling relationship or one in which you are learning something, you often absorb things from the person or event. You might take in such things unconsciously, as you did many things from parents and from the culture you were raised in;
http://dreamhawk.com/dream-dictionary/digest/
Perhaps you are blaming him for your own state of mind?
Not feeling comfortable with the style of wood the beds and closets were made of might refer to ideas, opinions, habits, that have become a fixed part of your nature. Just as the tree is originally green and supple but becomes hard and fixed as solid wood, so our opinions and attitudes, as they develop, are first pliable, then often become rigid.
To explore what this means to you, you could also use “Being the person or thing”.
I wonder if you (also) mean with “I still was not comfortable with the style of wood the beds and closets were made of, yet I kept it to myself” that you are willing to digest and integrate some aspects that you absorbed from living with your husband, and integrating these will make you feel (more) whole; http://dreamhawk.com/dream-dictionary/whole-2/
Your inner husband kissing you might then reflect your inner desire for uniting with these aspects and so your need for wholeness in your inner world.
Because you are the creator of your dream, I suggest you explore it for yourself as well,
http://dreamhawk.com/dream-encyclopedia/dream-yoga/

Hi, I had a dream and need help interpreting it. Is that possible?
My dream last night…My 83 year old Grandma (who in reality is on oxygen 24/7 and can barely walk,) decided that we were going to take her private 4 seater plane for a ride. She was pilot, I went to jump in beside her and sitting behind me was my mom who past away March 2012 and next to her my ex husband since September 2010. We are up in the air and then she starts flying up and down in loops, I realize I don’t have my seat belt on. This went on for a bit while I was bounced all over in the plane and at times the plane seemed to get smaller like a 2 seater but there were still the 4 of us in it. We landed some where in the dessert but there were condos and a party going a guy tried to help me with my seat belt but it was striped plastic and backwards. My mom and ex never exited from the plane or said anything during the dream. Grandma and I got back in the plane and took off again and that is all i remember. This is a very odd dream to me! December 2, 2015.
Hi Tony
I had a dream last night that there were beautiful piles of gleaming golden corn kernals with real pieces of gold scattered through out the mounds in the same kernel shape and size. I had the thought that the corn had the ability to deeply nourish our bodies and heal us. I was sharing this insight in my dream with my daughter. There was a deep sense of beauty, awe, wonder and appreciation.
Kelly – You dreamt true. For the gold kernels do nourish you. But in a way it is not the gold kernels, because they are simply dream images. The real healing comes from your deep sense of beauty, awe, wonder and appreciation.
That sense or feelings provide an open door to real inner riches – these are the experience of real love, wisdom and power.
These real gold nuggets are all already in you, so you do not have to search for them, but you do need to keep the door of your awareness open by keeping your sense of beauty, awe, wonder and appreciation. This is like clearing morning mists that block the view as the sun rises and evaporates the mists. See http://dreamhawk.com/inner-life/this-is-the-time-of-the-quickening/ and http://dreamhawk.com/body-and-mind/peoples-experiences-of-lifestream/

I used to have a dream about a particular house that kept growing and would not let me get out. Well today I had a dream of a different house much bigger and my husband and I were unpacking. My dog started playing with a cat (we don’t have a cat) and they disappeared. So I went to look for them. I found several new rooms. But I didn’t wander to far off and told my husband. Then some new neighbors came in from a different entrance. They apologized for coming inside but were looking for their cat. The husband didn’t want to come all the way in and had a disturbed look on his face. The lady asked if we knew the history of the house. I told her no. So her and I went exploring with another lady. I showed her where my parents had stayed when they visited. The rooms were grand but in an late 1800 or early 1900 kind of way. We kept exploring I saw a beautiful little boy and girl room. Then it opened up to a beautiful church. It was gorgeous and people were coming into worship. There was a room off of the church where baptisms could be done. By then I was tired and wanted to get back to the original part of the house. But we couldn’t every door led to another room and I started getting scared. As we tried to go back the way we came the house grew and it was more different rooms. Then I thought we were going back and I heard a lady saying to someone I caught you. Stop helping them. I turned around and the lady was behind me. I tried to force her to help me but couldn’t see her face. It was a weird dream with so much more that happened. But I’ve had dreams before where the house expands and tries to hold me captive. But this is the first time at this new house.
I had two dreams that I consider important:
1. I was in a place with green mountains on my right (maybe close to the ocean on my left ) and suddenly I saw a airplane going towards the mountain behind me and crashed behind it … I don’t remember if I heard the noise of the crash but I remember very clearly that I felt the waves (without sound) pushing me smoothly in my back since I was walking in the opposite direction of the crash. It was not a scary dream but the sensation of the waves in my back were very vivid.
2. I was in a park close to a lake during the day, I was walking close to a tree and suddenly I felt that I was floating up very smoothly, at the beginning was a nice sensation … suddenly it got dark and the sky was full of stars and at certain moment I did not want to go up and I grabbed a branch of the tree to keep close to the ground but my body and my feet were going up. It was kind of a pleasant sensation but it was a little concerned about going too high.
Your comments were highly appreciated!
Dear Carlos – What your dream could express is that you have decided to “walk away” from what the plane crash symbolises.
This could be many things; http://dreamhawk.com/dream-dictionary/airplane/
QUOTE:
Watching a plane crash: A sense of emergency; feeling you are aware of an important social or national event. Sensing something difficult happening or having happened in your life, like a divorce or loss of business or love for instance. Can sometimes relate to childhood traumas that make it difficult for you to get your life taking flight.
This decision could be symbolised in your next dream as well; escaping from “reality” by means of floating away; http://dreamhawk.com/dream-dictionary/float-floatin/
Since you are the creator of your dream, it will be helpful to explore it for yourself – even more because you consider these two dreams important – so that you can get a deeper feeling understanding of your own creation; http://dreamhawk.com/dream-dictionary/practical-techniques-for-understanding-your-dreams/
